- Rain's Point Of View -
I lay awake on the bed, lost in thought. These hospital mattresses are impossible to sleep on, so I decided that closing my eyes and thinking would be a good way to pass the time. I thought for a long while about Domon, and how he and my future might tie together.
A knock interrupted my thought process.
I glanced at the clock. It was 6 a.m., a little early for anyone to stop by, so I figured it was a nurse or something.
"Come in."
The door opened, and Domon stood in its frame. He was holding something, a bag with something in it. I sat up, and I could see his smile in the dim light as he rounded my bed and sat upon it, placing the bag on a nearby chair. His breath brushed my cheek as he leaned in to kiss me softly.
"Hey baby," he said tenderly, "how you holding up in here?"
"A lot better since you arrived." I said.
"Could you fall asleep?"
"No."
"Did you have a nightmare?"
I looked down, embarrassed.
"Yes. But these uncomfortable mattresses doesn't exactly make things any better."
He breathed a light laugh, stroking the side of my arm.
"You could fall asleep on me if you want. I promise I won't let any nightmares get you."
"Okay." I smiled. "I like falling asleep on you."
He propped a pillow up against the backboard, identical to the way he did it yesterday. I leaned back on him, and he wrapped his arms tightly around me, letting out a sigh of contentment. He kissed the back of my head lightly. I trailed my fingers across his forearms in front of me.
"How do you feel?" he asked, concerned.
"Pretty good. The food here sucks, but I can sit up with out a sharp nagging pain in my side."
He lets one hand fall gently on my bullet wound, his thumb caressing it. He kissed me cheek and hugged me closer, as if to protect me from the bandage and what awful pain came with it.
I tipped my head back and looked into his eyes. He was staring at the bandage, water droplets forming in his eyelids. I decided to avoid the subject, to add something positive instead.
"Did I ever tell you that you bring a calming peace over me? I'm going to fall asleep in two minutes, that's how good you make me feel."
He looked down at me, a single tar falling from his eyes and onto my cheek. He kissed it away with a smile on his face, but tears still in his eyes.
"Good." He said, "I'm glad you feel safe and comforted."
My hands came up to cup his face, and I brought his head down. I stared straight at him for a moment before bringing my head up so our lips could meet. I opened my mouth and let him in, kissing him, loving him.
"I do."
Then, with one last smile, I set my head back down on his shoulder, closed my eyes, and fell asleep.
- Domon's Point Of View -
I slept for two and a half hours, Rain slept for three. I figured she hadn't slept much last night, those dreams she must be having had to be absolutely awful. I'm glad I decided to follow my instinct and come here early. At least this way, she can get some decent rest before her parents show up.
When she finally did begin to stir, I whispered in her ear.
"Hey lovely. How was your nap?"
"Divine. I'd say the best part about it was the pillow."
I smiled, both at her words and at the fact she hadn't gotten off of me yet. I pressed her rear end lightly, and she laughed.
"Hey fat butt," I said playfully, "I have something for you if you move off me."
She elbowed me and scooted forward so I could get up. I picked up the bag I had brought and placed it on the nightstand table next to the bed. Sitting back down next to her, I picked out a medium-sized box from the bag.
It was wrapped in velvet, dark blue velvet. It was a jewelry box; the kind jewelry comes in after you buy it.
I gave it to her, placing it in her hand. She held it lightly, as if she were unworthy of touching such a precious object. Mouth dropped in awe, she looked from me to the box, again and again.
"Open it." I said, a reassuring smile on my face.
One hand rose to the box, and she opened it slowly. Her eyes got wide as she discovered the box's content.
"It's beautiful..."
Picking it up by the clasp, she raised a string of pearls out of the case, staring at it. She placed the case down beside her, all her attention focused on the shining, glinting pearls.
"Yeah," I said, "it is beautiful. Kind of like you."
She looked at me, a smile on her face and tears welling in her eyes.
"Let me put it on." I said.
She nodded, handing me the necklace delicately. I undid the clasp, put it around her neck, and popped open the jewelry box, which had a mirror inside. She stared at herself, fingering each pearl.
"What're they for?"
I scooted behind her, so my face was in the mirror as well. I brought a hand up and traced the pearls too. When I got to the one closest to her heart, I stopped, placing my outstretched palm on her breast and upper chest.
"They're for right here. They're for your big heart, for your ability to love and forgive. For being the person you are."
She smiled as tears spilled down her cheeks. She turned around and I put my arms around her, running a hand through her hair. She cried for a minute, and even though I knew she was overjoyed, I whispered to her.
"They're supposed to make you happy."
She leaned back a bit, looking into my eyes with a smile.
"I...I'm just so...pleased...these are amazing...I...I love them...oh, you know what I mean!" she said, laughing in spite of herself.
"Yes. I do."
"Thank you Domon. I love them."
"You're welcome."
I stared at her, and she stared back at me. I brushed away her tears, and we just sent ourselves to our own little world for a while, where no one was hurt, nothing was wrong, and everything was always okay.
"I have something else that might make you happy." I said.
"What could make me happier than I already am?"
I smiled and reached for my bag again. I pulled a book out of it, and put it on my lap. I scooted up against the backboard again, ushering her to sit next to me. She did, and I placed an arm around her, letting my hand rest on her hip. With the other hand, I placed the closed book on her lap.
"It took me an hour to find this in my closet, but I knew I had this somewhere." I said, "Go on, open it to the first page."
She looked at me for a moment before looking back down at the book. She pulled back the cover and read the title. After that, she couldn't stop laughing.
The title read: Domon and Rain – A Childhood Friendship.
"Who-made-this?" she said in-between laughs.
"My mom." I said, "She thought we were so cute together."
After she settled down, she looked at the cover page, staring at it, as if debating over something.
"What is it Rain?" I asked questioningly.
"I'm contemplating whether or not to open this, because if I do, there is a large possibility that I might be embarrassed."
"Don't worry," I said, "We'll laugh together. I swear."
She took a deep breath, turned the page, and immediately got pink. There was a picture of her and me, in the kitchen sink, taking a bath together. The caption read: Bath time!
"Hey," I said, "we should try that sometime."
She got redder and slapped my leg. I turned the next page. It was of my first birthday; Rain and I were sitting on the couch, smiling at the camera.
We kept going through the book, with pictures of us by clowns, in amusement parks, meeting special dressed up characters, playing at the park, and a bunch of other little kids things. Happiness filled these pages for a while, but a while ends.
We turned to a page where it was a picture of just me and my mom, she was holding me on her hip at the beach.
"I sure miss Mom." I whispered.
Rain took my hand and looked into my eyes.
"I miss her too."
She kissed my cheek softly before speaking again.
"And not just for her apple pies you know."
I laughed a little at that. I kissed my fingertips and touched them to the picture, leaving my hand on the book, trying to feel close to her. Rain placed her hand over mine, speaking softly.
"She loved you a lot. She knows you love her too."
I sighed and took a deep breath.
"I know."
Rain put her head under my chin, trying to comfort me. I snaked my arms around her waist, needing someone to hold onto for support. She caressed my arm, letting me take as much time as I needed to recover. It had been a long while since I had spoke of my mom, but not since I had thought of her. I thought of her every day.
"Are you ready to turn the page?" she asked sympathetically.
"Yes. I'll turn it."
I reached out and turned the page as quickly as I could, but it seemed to go in slow motion anyway. After it was done, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, letting it go. When I opened them, Rain was staring at me. She kissed me softly on the lips, and said something. She said it so quietly, only one who was waiting to for it could actually hear it.
"I'm proud of you."
