Chapter #18: Where are You?
----Atem's POV----
The boy, Ryou, brought me to his village. It was very small; probably less than 500 people inhabiting it. Little huts made of mud, sticks and a little bit of leaves. In front of every door was an animal skin to keep out the sandy winds.
"Come, this way. This is my hut." Ryou said, as he beckoned me to follow him. His hut was a bit smaller than the neighbouring huts, but his was the only one to have livestock in a pen behind the house. He had a few chickens and one sickly looking camel.
He pulled back the skin covering the entrance and welcomed me silently into the hut. A small kitchen, consisting of a small fire with one pot bubbling something that smelled familiar was on the right--a woman was watching it intensely. Four beds were near the back, along with some baskets and rotting fruit. A skinny dog was sleeping on my right, with a bone in its mouth.
"Ryou!" An older woman cried, looking up from the bubbling pot. "What have you got?" She walked up to the frail white haired boy and took the bread from his hands. She smiled and hugged him. "I'm sorry you have to do this..."
"It is alright mother." Ryou muttered in his mother's black hair. "Is it enough?"
"Anything you have is enough my love....." His mother smiled sadly, standing up to walk back to the pot, with some problems. "Until your father finds work...."
"Is she your mother?" I ask Ryou. I knew it was an obvious answer, but, just checking.
"Yes...."
"Can she see me?"
Ryou stood silent, somewhat refusing to answer it. "She is almost blind in both eyes."
"I am sorry." I am not sure why I am apologizing.....
He shakes his head and walks past his mother towards the back. "Where are we going now, Ryou?"
"To pick our dinner." He whispered. Going into the back, I notice that he had five hens and one rooster. He made some clucking noises to bring the chickens to a halt. He reached down to pet one of them. "Do you think this one is good?"
I notice that one hen and the only rooster were much bigger and fatter. This hen was very skinny with little feathers. "Why have you chosen this one?"
"Because the bigger ones make eggs." He said, petting the hen he had selected. "This one is sick. She is going to die soon anyway." Picking the hen up, he walked past me and put it in a separate cage with a few seeds and some water. Somewhat of a last meal.....
"Are you staying for dinner?" Ryou asks me. I am a bit surprised, but reply, "No." I realize that he needs the food more than I do. I would be just taking his rations.
"Ryou! Ryou!" A feminine voice sounds from the house.
"Aria!" Ryou cries, running towards a young girl. Aria is a little shorter than Ryou with long black hair that she obviously inherited from her mother. He embraces her in a loving hug; he even picks her up and twirls her around. Like the mother, she makes no indication that she sees me. Maybe 'Aria' is like those people at the market....I guess Ryou is the only one who can see me.
"Big brother! I'm so glad you're home!" Aria squeals as Ryou spins her around in a circle. "Come on! Let's go play in the back!" She pulls the smiling Ryou towards the door that I was standing in front of. I move out of the way, letting Aria past. Ryou stops at the door and looks at me.
"She's my little sister....Aria's only eight." Ryou smiles at the mention of his sister. "If anything were to happen to her....or my mother...." His eyes turn sad, then angry. "....I don't know what I'd do...."
I nod and watch the two siblings run around, chasing the chickens.....chasing each other with sticks......pretending the sticks were swords. I smile at them both. Something strikes me. Why didn't Ryou mention his father when he was thinking of the things that he would do if his mother or sister got hurt...? Where IS his father?
If this was Yami Bakura in the past, why hasn't he told anyone about his little sister, Aria? What happened to her? And his mother?
Why can only he talk to me?
What is he trying to show me? Why?
----In the Hallway--Joey's POV----
"Yo! Elaya! Slow down!" Tristan calls out to our friend.
"For the billionth time, dude, SHE CAN'T HEAR US!" I shout at him, keeping up in race. Elaya walking to the office....She's in deep shit now. Man, not even I have the guts to tell off a teacher like that! She's got balls of steel to do that....
Finally, we catch up to her. "Stupid fucking bitch." She mumbles under her breath.
"Whoa! Someone needs to wash their mouth out with soap!" Tristan nags.
"What are you? Her mom?" I ask, looking at him oddly. Actually, Tristan WOULD look good in an apron....GAH! Why am I thinking this?
"Hey Elaya!" A sickening voice is heard behind us. Great, it's Miranda....Just the people I wanna see.
Elaya turns around; but once she recognizes the person who called her, she spins back around. Jeeze, I'd be happy to go to the principles office too!
"Oh come on, it was just a joke!" Miranda insists.
"Yeah? Well I wasn't fucking laughing." Elaya said, turning back around to face her, narrowing her eyes.
"Watch your language missy!" Miranda playfully scolds, wagging her finger from side to side.
"What are you? My mom?" Elaya asked. Hey, I guess great minds think alike!
"No, but I might as well be." Something about that sentence made Elaya's gaze widen...and made my heart stop.
"WHAT did you say?!" Elaya asked, moving up towards her. Tristan tried to make a grab for her, but his arm went right through her.
"Uh, dude, what's going on?"
"You heard me the first time." Miranda smirks. "Honestly...Now your stupid, have no sense of fashion AND deaf. What a charity chase!"
"What the hell is your problem?!" Elaya cried, taking a few more angry steps towards her. "Do I have a sign on me somewhere that says, 'Kick me?' Do you have some problem in your hollow, air filled head?"
Miranda looked back at her, arms folded. "No, I don't."
"Well, what a surprise!" Elaya shouts enthusiastically. "Now, you better shut up about my mother." Her tone changed from a fake hysterical one to a voice laced with poison.
"Or what?" Miranda asked, smirking; standing defiantly in front of her.
"You wouldn't want to know what I'd do to you, bitch." Elaya smiles, turns heal quickly and walks back towards us.
"WOOHOO! You go girl! Oh! Miranda, you got showed!" Tristan shouted, waving his fist in a circular motion in the air.
"You tell her E!" I shout as well. I feel like such a cheerleader....Minus the short skirt and massive chest...GAH! Why am I thinking of these things?!
Miranda had a smile on that showed me and Elaya's back that she wanted to test her luck; 'I wanna see what you've got' was exactly what it spelled out to me. This can't be good.
"Your mother is a poor excuse for one. I mean, you have no restraints--you break every rule and don't care! For all we know, your mother could be nothing more than an arrogant bitch just like you! The way you act, she'd be better off dead!" Miranda closed her eyes for a moment, thinking of more insults.
Elaya stopped in her tracks as the last of Miranda's verbal abuse hit her hard. Before either me or Tristan could blink, Elaya turned back towards Miranda with a fist raised. "Don't you DARE talk about her like that!" Just as Miranda was about to utter another word, Elaya's fist connected with her face with a sickening crack.
One word. Ouch.
Miranda was sent backwards, being caught by her friends--who in turn were screaming and shouting, "OH MY GOD!"
Elaya stood, emotionless, as Miranda held her bleeding nose. "You bitch! My nose!"
"I guess Daddy will be paying for that nose job you always wanted. Hey, while you're at it, get a whole fucking make-over, because if I ever see you again I will hurt you." On that threat, Elaya turned away, walking past me and Tristan to get to the principle's office.
"Did I just see what I think I saw?" Tristan asked, eyes wide and mouth dropped.
"Uh-huh." I mutter, moving my head up and down. "Miranda got her face smashed in....by Elaya!" I didn't know she was THAT violent.
Everything around us got dark again. "Power outage?" Tristan asked, turning to face me. Then, even Tristan was beginning to fade! "DUDE!"
"JOEY!" It was then that we realized that we were no longer holding on to each other so we wouldn't get separated. I saw him try and grab on to me......Fuck. Now I'm back in the dark.
What next? Please, let nothing bad happen to poor old Joey!
I turn around to face, oh, what a surprise, more darkness. "Fuck!"
"Mutt, what are you doing here?" A familiar voice asked, part cautious, part cocky.
"Kaiba?" I ask the darkness as I walk closer. WHACK! Goodie, I found him. "Why dontcha watch where your going?!" I shout at him. First Tristan, now him....just great.
"Shut up mutt. I don't have time for this."
"You don't have time for much, do ya?" I ask, trying to see SOME part of him in the darkness. "Gotta flashlight or something?"
"If I did, don't you think I'd open it by now? Oh, wait, that's right, you can't think." He mutters. I bet you any money, he was smiling. Now that Tristan's not here, I can wipe it off his face.
"Fuck off Kaiba!" I move a fist from my side, swinging it to where the voice came from, hoping to connect flesh. Success!
He groans from the unsuspecting hit. "You little--!" I felt something push at my legs as I was tackled to the ground. "AH!"
I felt a weight come up to my chest. "Get off-a me!" I cry, thrashing my arms wildly.
"Stupid mutt." Kaiba mutters, but he doesn't seem to get the message that he's sitting on my rib cage and that I can barely breathe. Jackass.
"So, mutt," He starts to say casually; as if he's NOT suffocating me. "What do you remember when your parents split?"
I stopped. "What?" Does he mean that when I was seeing Elaya's past, he saw mine?
"Never mind. I doubt you do. You know, it's kinda a coincidence that the name I call you matches your sister's favourite stuffed animal--well, at that time anyway." Kaiba continues.
Some new adrenaline pumps in my body as I summon my strength--and anger--to roll him over, putting me on top and pinning him!
"You jackass! You had no fucking right!" I shout at him, trying to see his face. I know that I'm on top of his chest because I can feel him breathe-- WITH difficulty. I feel a hand grab mine, but I turn my wrist and end up getting his in my hand.
"Like I had a choice, Wheeler!"
"My personal business is my personal business! Don't you dare talk about my business! Got it, rich boy?!" I shout, putting more of my weight on his chest.
"Wow, I always wanted you two to be friends, but this is ridiculous." I turn around to the voice I've just heard in the memory. Elaya's here......with her own key-chain flashlight.....and I'm on top of Kaiba.
"AH!" I cry as I jump off him. "It's not what ya think!"
"Grow up, mutt." Kaiba grumbles as he dusts himself off.
"Anyway," Elaya drags on, "what now? Do we wait for another memor--" She must be physic, before she could even finish, another white light appeared in front of us.
"Ladies first...." I joke, eyeing Kaiba. The white light suddenly showed us a sandy place. We're back in Egypt, aren't we?
"Well, mutt, the pyramids and the sand are a dead give-a-way." Kaiba mutters. I guess I was thinking out loud again...I really gotta stop doing that.
"Here we go again." Elaya sighs. "Come on, we gotta start walking. The faster we find the memory taking place, the faster we'll ALL get out of here.
----In Egypt--Reader's POV----
Yugi and Téa have been following Atem and Isis for the past, what seems like, hours. Atem summoned up all the High Priests and had a talk with them discussing the fate of his land. Their plan of action was to evacuate the people to the next village over--where the duel could not possibly hurt them.
A loud thundering crash was heard from outside, startling Téa, Yugi and everyone else in the room. [What the heck was that?] Téa thought.
"Obelisk the Tormentor!" A voice cried. [That sounds like....Kaiba!] Yugi's eyes widened in actualization.
"Téa! This is it! I think the battle is going to start soon!" Yugi shouted.
"Priest Seth!" Atem gasped, running up to the entrance of the room. "Everyone, make an emergency evacuation, NOW!"
Téa only blinked once before all the Priests were out of the room, running towards a side exit to carry out their task of the evacuation thing. [Wow, these guys are fast....]
Another loud crack of lightning was heard as well as booming thunder. Then, there were screams. Both Yugi and Téa ran to the nearest balcony to see that the city closest to the palace was ablaze.
"Oh my God....Yugi! Look! All those people...." Téa's sentence wasn't finished as she hung her head in sadness.
Then, at the same time, both pairs of eyes landed on Kaiba--Priest Seth as they called him. He was leading the way, with his followers chanting and with his Millennium Rod held high. "Pharaoh Atem! I challenge you to a duel to claim your position!" Seth shouts over the thunder and screams.
From their position at the balcony, they could see Atem walk out the front entrance of the palace doors and cross his arms. "Your means of destruction are pointless Priest Seth. Do not harm my people if it is 'me' that you want."
[I'm surprised we can even hear those two talking!] Téa thought. [We ARE at least a floor above ground.....]
Seth laughed. "Foolish cousin. Do you not see that in order to get you, I need to get your people first?"
[Did he just say, 'cousin'?] Yugi thought. "Uh, Téa, did I just hear him call Atem his cousin?"
Téa nodded, in shock as well. "I can't believe Kai--I mean Seth--would try to kill his own cousin!"
"Well, power can make people do nasty things....." Yugi muttered; his gaze returning to the front of the palace.
"What do you want from me, Priest Seth?" Atem asked, keeping his arms crossed and his eyes narrowed.
"To take what my father should have had! I deserve to be Pharaoh, not to you, Atemu!" Priest Seth shouted. "I challenge you to a Shadow Game, Pharaoh! The winner will take it's stand on the throne."
"And the loser?" Atem asked.
Seth smirked. "I doubt you want me to describe what I'm going to do to you."
"Don't be too sure that you'll win against me, 'dearest cousin'....I hold the power inside my Puzzle to destroy you."
"Why haven't you used it yet?"
"Because I have more dignity than to destroy family." Atem stated.
"Well, are you up to my challenge?" Seth sneered as he closed the distance between him and his cousin. Fierce winds blew the sand and debris from the destruction he had caused around Atem and himself.
"I never back down from a challenge, Seth, and I won't start now.....now that the lives of my people are at stake!" Atem shouted with pride and confidence.
"Alright then, Pharaoh," Seth said, smiling, "Let's duel."

"I never back down from a challenge, Seth, and I won't start now.....now that the lives of my people are at stake!" Atem shouted with pride and confidence.
"Alright then, Pharaoh," Seth said, smiling, "Let's duel."

OH YEAH! Cliffe to the max! Don't hurt me.
Anyway, hopefully ya'll like this chappie! Now, for the first time for this fic, I have to answer some questions:
For someone who asked about html uploads (Red Ruby Yami Girl...i think....) I've never actually dealt with an html upload before....I use Microsoft Word...But, it should load! And for someone else who didn't get any sleep since they read my fanfic for like 100 hours, please, find a bed and sleep in! I feel so guilty! : ) glad you enjoyed it!
Well, now that I'm done, whatever.
PLEASE REVIEW!
