Chapter #19: The Dead and the Living
--Yugi's POV--
Oh my God! They're actually going to duel now! This memory was the one thing that drove me to join Battle City! This is the memory is engraved on that mystical tablet that was once inside the Domino Museum!
All that destruction....all because Priest Seth wanted to confront Atem-- his own cousin--and take over his throne. If the past repeated itself in the future, then the outcome of my duel with Kaiba should be the outcome of this one!
"Yugi, I think I see where they're going!" Téa calls out from in front of me. We've been running in these narrow stone corridors since we last saw the two cousins.....and, let's face it. We're lost.
Or not.
Téa was right; she made me turn to the right and there they were! Standing across from each other in what appears to be an ancient dueling arena.
"Ready Atem?" Priest Seth grins.
"Do not address me in such a manner Priest Seth. I am still Pharaoh to you." Atem frowned.
"As of yet, you are....But don't get so comfortable."
"Who sent you here?" Atem asks, trying to get to the bottom of all this.
"Myself." Atem's opponent answers.
"Who are you working for?!"
Priest Seth smile dropped. "I work for no one. I do not side with the dark forces....nor do I side with you......I am independent and do not need others to push me around. That's why I want your title Atem. To prove to people that I deserve more."
"Well, he sure sounds like Kaiba....That's for sure..." Téa muttered as we watched from the high balcony.
Priest Seth changed his tone of voice abruptly. "Enough introductions! I came here to duel and to take what I want!" His Millennium Rod was shining brightly.
Atem's Puzzle was also shinning. "Alright Seth. Let this Shadow Game begin!"
--Reader's POV--
"Shadi? Is that you?" Pegasus shouts as a beam of light in the shape of the known Key came into his vision. [I've been walking for ages in the dark! This is the only thing I've seen since that memory with little Ishizu and an even littler Marik!]
"Who beckons me?" Shadi's voice carries his question as it bounces off the stone walls of the Pharaoh's mind. [It sounds like Pegasus....but in this 'game', I cannot trust anything until it has been proven to be so.]
Ishizu's face shows fear as she too does not trust the voice that sounds like Pegasus'. Shadi shines his light towards the voice and found Maxamillion standing there with his arm covering his eyes. "Can you turn that down a little?" He jokes.
Shadi lowers the Key. "Are you Maxamillion Pegasus?"
He blinks several times. "Yes. I believe I am."
Shadi studies his face for a few moments. [The lost powers of the Millennium Eye still beat inside him. No clone could ever match that....He is who is says he is.] "Yes, you are. Tell me, how did you get here?"
"I'm not too sure myself....I was just watching a memory of you, Ishizu, and your brother. Actually, BOTH of you were there...." Pegasus said, thinking aloud.
Ishizu's eyes opened at the mention of the memory that contained Shadi, her brother and herself. [He must of seen when Marik and I came above ground.....] "Pegasus?"
"Yes Ishizu?"
"What did you see?"
"Well....at first it was somewhat boring. It was just you and Marik walking around in the marketplace....Then, Shadi appears and tells you that an evil has been awoken....And then, after that, you both return to your underground lair and Marik--" Pegasus could finish as Ishizu began to cry.
"Of all the memories you could have seen....You had to see that one....When my brother became consumed with hatred for the Pharaoh...." She lowered her head.
Pegasus stepped over to her. "Is this the same 'hatred' that has taken over his body again?"
She nodded, letting the tears hit the darkness. "I can only hope we can save him again." While Pegasus comforted Ishizu, Shadi was thinking of a way out of their current place.
[If we just find them using the power of my Item, they'll be able to spot us as well and prepare for us....But....If Pegasus came to us from entering a memory, maybe we can do the same.....and hope that we arrive in the place in which we wish to be brought.] Shadi turned towards the two. "Follow me. It is time we see what they want us to see."
Pegasus and Ishizu looked at each other. "But Shadi," Ishizu started, "you said that we should avoid the memories at all costs in case we got lost!"
"I know Ishizu." Shadi said, continuing to walk forward. "But it may be the only way to find Yami Bakura and your brother without them spotting us a mile away."
The three walked straight towards the memory Shadi sensed. The bright light came and soon they were brought into a fairly furnished home with tall windows and beautiful artwork all around.
"This is....This is my home." Pegasus breathed, shocked to his core. [I never went back to this place since.....since Cecelia passed on.....]
They all continued to walk down a strip of red carpeting until they reached a door. "Pegasus, do you know what is inside?" Shadi asked.
"I haven't been here in so long..." Pegasus trailed. Ishizu then opened the doors to reveal a room filled with art supplies and a man with silver hair in front of an easel painting a young blonde haired woman.
"My love...." Pegasus whispered. "Cecelia...."
--Tristan's POV--
"JOEY!" I cry out loudly. What the hell?! Now I'm back where I've started....except this time, I'm alone....in the scary darkness...where anything can be hiding--GAH! I can't think of a horror flick now!
Stay calm...stay calm....Just because Joey went off in some mystical fairyland doesn't mean that your screwed Tristan....Just breathe....
A loud crackling of light sets off behind me. I practically jump a mile in the air before realizing that there is nothing there. Okay....Just something Yami Bakura and Marik set up to scare you.....it's just them....Wrong thoughts. Those guys could kill me! But why didn't they do it already?! GAH! I have to stop being paranoid!
Hey, a light! Maybe it's my tunnel to free......Wait...this is the same sorta light me and Joey saw before we headed into that memory of Elaya....I'm not falling for that again...oh no!
Or, like I have a choice. The light is getting closer. I don't want to die! I have Serenity to look after! I feel myself turn around and run in the opposite direction. But then, I blink, and I realize that I'm in a room. A very well furnished room actually; with tall, really tall windows standing straight behind me and with lots of paintings in gold frames. Since when was I sitting down?
What does it matter? This chair is leather! Awesome!
Just as I'm settling in, some chick in a suit calls me up. "Excuse me....He'll see you now." She then returns to a desk that's directly in front of me.
Wait, who am I seeing now? I don't think I knew what was happening, but I stood up, grabbed a black briefcase looking thing that was resting by the chair and walked towards the door that that other chick came through. Why are my shoes making such a clanking noise against the wood tiles? Last time I checked, I was wearing sneakers....Shouldn't they be making a 'squeaky' noise?
My gaze drops down to that briefcase that I picked up....OH MY GOD! Why am I wearing pink and blue bracelets AND a red skirt?! I thought I stopped having these cross-dressing dreams years ago! I never knew I HAD cross- dressing dreams!
Before I walk into that room where 'he' is, I stop by a mirror.....to see that I'm Téa! WHAT?! How can I be Téa?! I look myself over in the mirror and smile....Or was that Téa smiling? Oh man.....However I got here, I have a feeling it won't be pretty....
Both of us walk towards the door and open it. Inside is a massive oak desk with millions of pictures of models all over the walls. Téa was in modeling? Or was this some kind of dance school thing? Most of the girls on the walls WERE in ballet outfits and such....I thought she wanted to be a dancer....
"Good afternoon Mr. Matthews. I'm Téa Gardner.....I'm so happy that you called me." I heard Téa say.
"Likewise with the introduction, Ms. Gardner." He says with a smile. There's something about this guy that I don't like. He's smiling kinda evilly at me...or Téa....or whoever I am! I thought I'd have an identity crisis when I was at least 30!
"Glad you could make it. Please, sit." He continues as he motions his hand towards yet another comfy looking leather chair.
There's something about this guy that is freaking me out! Mr. Matthews, if that IS his real name, has brown eyes and brown hair with a streak of silver in it.....He's wearing a black shirt with a gray sports coat over it......Don't sit down...don't sit down..
HEY! What did I just tell you?! Do I have ANY control over Téa's body?....Guess not....Am I just IN her body, watching stuff?
"I brought my portfolio....Do you want to look at it?" Téa says, opening her briefcase and pulling out stuff.
"Yes, of course." He smiles again.... "Your application says that you are studying in the New York School of Performing Arts [1], correct?"
I can feel Téa's head move up and down in a nodding, 'yes'. "You saw me at my practices."
"You are very talented Ms. Gardner."
"Thank you, Mr. Matthews." I...or Téa says.
"Please, call me John."
Oh no. This conversation is going casual.....Why can't Téa see that?! This dude is trying to pick her up!
--Justi's POV--
I blink several times as the memory of my sick mother vanishes. Now, I am in what appears to be some sort of holding room. It is not completely dark since there are lines of light that come through the wood panels. Outside my 'cage' are people or things cheering rather loudly.
I look down to see what I am wearing. Hmm. From the poor light in this place, all I can identify is that I'm wearing some sort of steel, covering my entire body. It is sliver and reflects all the light that hits it. Am I wearing armour?
The door of my cage is suddenly lifted upwards.....I gasp in remembrance. I know this place! This is where our soldiers would train and battle against one another in tournaments! Many unlucky souls lost their lives in this arena.....
I step forward onto the sandstone-covered arena to see millions of fans cheering. My silver armour clanks against the stones as I make it to the middle of the arena. I look up to see Atemu and Priest Seth sitting together at the highest seat in the house. This must have been just before Seth went off on his own.
Does not the Pharaoh recognize me down here? My mind searches for a reason or a clue as of why I am down here in the first place.......My sword, maybe? Maybe I wanted to test out my sword on some soldiers to see how well it compares in battle.....Maybe I was trying out for the Pharaoh's army.....
My attention snaps to the door on the opposite wall where another door opens vertically. There stands another solider clad in black armour with a shield in hand and a long sword at his side I am quite positive that it is a male underneath his suit......I know that I was the only female to even be part of the army; even if it was for a brief amount of time.
He strides over to me quickly. Pretty soon, we are face-to-face....or helmet-to-helmet. His only shows his eyes with a little slit for his nose. I'm not sure what mine looked like but it was probably designed the same way; except silver in colour.
His eyes are brown.....or possibly black since the helmet doesn't let much light in for looking. He continues to stare at me until a loud horn blows and all the fans quiet down. Atemu, from his high seat, stands up to address the crowd.
"Fellow people of Egypt. Today is the first round of the semi-finals: Silver Sword verses Dark Night [2]. The rules are simple: The winner is the last man standing. There will be no aid from you, the spectators. However, you will decide the fate of the loser. The winner will move on to the finals and will have a 50/50 chance of becoming the newest addition to my army. Let this battle begin!"
The crowd went in an uproar. I heard my opponent unsheathe his sword slowly, drawing my attention. I snap back towards him and quickly grab the Pharaoh's Sword from behind me. I pull it in front of me and hold it proudly. If I was the first female in the army, then it must mean that I have won this tournament already.....Doesn't it?
Suddenly, the man charged towards me, sword high. I placed my sword horizontally in front of myself to block his quick attack. A loud clang tore through the air as our swords collided. He is very strong, but I manage to push him off.
He stumbles backwards a few steps and I advance towards him, effectively making a large scratch in his body armour that protects his chest. The force of my blow sends him to the ground; down, but not out. The crowd cheers even more loudly.
From the ground, he looks up at me, somewhat afraid that I'll charge him while he is on the ground. Instead, I put out my hand and wave him over to me. Bring it on, my mind thinks.
The man is confused, but stands nonetheless. My gaze averts to Atemu, who is sitting still, just watching. But Seth is smiling......like he knows something.....
Just as I bring my eyes back, I notice that he is already charging at me.
His sword comes straight for my chest and brings me to step backwards. I look down to check my damages and notice that a piece of my armour was chipped. He comes at me again, but this time I'm ready; I bring my sword up to his and block it. I swing it so it pushes his sword off of mine successfully.
He comes back to me sword once again high and we are now in a lock. We both grit our teeth in frustration as neither of us are letting go.
A steel-plated knee cap comes out from him and gets me in my exposed torso.
And I fall from the hit; dropping my guard and my sword. If he is going to play dirty, then I will too! Funny how even though I'm watching myself battle this man, I am thinking almost the same way I did all those years ago.....
From the floor, I swung my leg out towards him and tripped him easily. I stood up to grab my sword that fell, but a hand grabbed my leg and brought me down to the floor again. Curses!
My sword was inches away, but his hand was still on my ankle. I tried shaking him off, but soon I felt a blade at my neck.
And the crowd was shouting, "Kill him! Kill him!"
I gave one last look at my sword and closed my eyes.
