HEARTACHE

By: KNE

Chapter 2

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She wasn't particularly in the mood to discuss her heart condition with family, let alone mother. For one thing, their reaction would be go completely out of hand, leaving her at the doctors all over again. That, was something that Kagome dreaded. Sitting for hours in the plain and boring hospital rooms, while they examined her over and over again. Nope. Never happening again, she would rather die then be treated like a guinea pig..

Maybe she was just nervous. Kagome stretched out on her bed and yawned. Anyways, she would just have to live with it. She took her medicine as prescribed, and kept a healthy diet. She didn't over work her self, and she always went on check ups. So there was no way that something was wrong. Hearing the slam of the front door, Kagome sat up and threw her pillow to the ground. Souta was home. Maybe he had a more interesting day, or at least something that would keep her mind of her worries.

She found her lazy brother lying on the couch, with one arm draped over his head, and the other under his head. She sighed and patted his knee.

"Bad first day, I assume?" she asked. Souta snorted, and grabbed his backpack at the foot of the couch.

"I'm tired…." He mumbled, dumping all the contents in front of Kagome. Hundreds of folded notebook paper tumbled out onto her lap, as Souta dropped the bag and fell back onto the couch. Kagome pursed her lips together and unfolded one. A smile crept onto her face.

"Dear Souta, you are the most hottest boy I've ever met. Please accept the feelings I have for you, and let me know tomorrow…..love Momo?" Kagome laughed and tossed it aside, and fumbled with the next one. "My beloved Souta, do you believe in love at first sight? Please respond to me…love Haruka…" Another burst of laughter, and she was rolling on the carpet. Souta just glared.

"Seems like everything went well…." Kagome said between gasps. Souta snorted again, and kicked the letters.

"It was crazy Kagome. They acted like they've never seen a boy before," he made a disgusted face. "I swear they chased me all day."

"But that's soo cute!" Kagome giggled, patting her brother on the arm. "…and for third graders too!" It was funny, but she also pitied her brother. Souta himself, was actually a cute kid. Besides his laziness, he was athletic and smart. She couldn't wait to see him as a teenager.

"Yeah yeah…" Souta said, waving her off. "What about you? How was your first day?" Kagome's laughing died down, and soon it was quiet.

"What do you mean?"

"You know what I mean? Did you like it?" Souta sat up, and started cleaning up. Kagome fell back on her butt.

"I guess, it was alright," she began twirling her hair around her finger. "It's very loud, but it's still interesting." Souta raised an eyebrow.

"Did you make any friends?" he wiped his mouth with his sleeve. Kagome tilted her head.

"Yeah, I actually did. There were a few in my homeroom, and this guy in my P.E class…"

"P.E! Didn't mom send a doctor's note with you this morning?" Souta demanded, walking up to Kagome. She could of sworn he could be the older child of the family. For an eight year old, he was pretty mature at times.

"I threw it away."

"Why?" Kagome shrugged and stood up. Too bad he was about three heads shorter than her. "What about your condition?"

"I'm fine Souta, quit worrying about little things like that. Plus we're doing archery, so nothing's going happen," she walked towards the stairs. "Don't tell mom or I'll kill you!" She smiled when her threat came through. Souta stood at the bottom of the stairs and shook his head.

"Fine!"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like they did yesterday morning, Kagome and Souta said their goodbyes at the bridge and headed their separate ways. Souta towards the elementary school, and Kagome towards the high school. They skies were a bit brighter then the day before. Kagome fixed her skirt and pulled her bag higher over her shoulder as she proceeded down the road.

"Another day…" she whispered. She stared off at the streets around her. Tokyo wasn't so bad. There were a lot more people, and the buildings were much higher. She had been to Tokyo plenty of times, but had never actually lived here. Stopping at a traffic light, Kagome bit her bottom lip. She had completely forgotten about Kouga and how he had literally announced that they were a 'couple'. A few girls had come up to her and swoon over Kouga telling her how lucky she was. Apparently, she saw the guy as a conceited jock. But then again, she really didn't know the guy.

Nodding her head, Kagome made up her mind to tell him that she was not going to be his girlfriend. Instead, friends first…right? She snorted, to her…it was 'once a friend, always a friend.' True love was something she wanted to experience, but could a person really fall in love with someone that they've known for a while? Or was there such thing as love at first sight. She shrugged. Whatever it was, she would never know. Her three friends from Kyoto, had always talked about how their hearts would start racing and then they would just know…that 'he' was the one. But, Kagome…she had never really experienced that.

Her thoughts were interrupted when she ran straight into someone's back (hard as a wall) and fell backwards onto her bottom, along with books.

"Ouch," Kagome mumbled, quickly sitting up and sorting out the books. "I'm sorry," she said, picking the books that were not familiar to her and handing it to the person. She looked up and apologized again, only to find golden eyes looking down at her. That was when she heard the thumping of heart again. His hands snatched the books quickly from hers, and he turned and walked fast away, leaving her on the ground. Some people even turned to look at the rude boy. Kagome just sat there, trying to calm herself. Her heart was working up again, but why? Licking her lips, Kagome slowly gathered her belongings and stood up. She could still see him not too far away, already reaching the school gates.

"That was rude…" Kagome muttered, tilting her head and then continued walking. The boy, Inuyasha was in her homeroom. He was a loner, she figured. He was quiet but his aura was as cold as ice. Just thinking about his icy glare sent shivers down her back. "What did I ever do to him?"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

His intentions were to turn around and apologize, but when she looked up, he just froze. It was her again, the Kikyou-look-alike. So how was he supposed to react? It wasn't her fault that she resembled the girl that he loved so much, but it just pissed the hell out of him. Her face paled also, he saw it right away. He quickly reached out and jerked the books out of her hands.

This wasn't time to stare and think back on old times. He was doing his job by staying away from her, so why did she have to run into him? He knew that by walking away, he did something really mean, but at the moment…he didn't care. He just had to keep his distance, seeing as that he was in three of her classes already. That was enough to make him go crazy for eternity.

He stopped at the entrance of the school, and slowly turned around. He could see her making her way slowly towards the school. One hand in the pocket of her light brown jacket, and the other one holding onto the strap of her bag. She was looking up at the sky with no care in the world, and the wind blowing her hair. He blushed. Inuyasha was staring at her. He hated himself for even noticing the little things, but he couldn't help it. He was only noticing because, she looked so much like Kikyou.

"Dammit," he muttered, turning around. "Stay calm…."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miroku took a bite out of his shiny red apple and turned to Kagome. They were sitting on the picnic table under the tree of the school courtyard. Other students were sprawled across the neatly cut grass enjoying their lunch.

"So what do you think so far of Kuriko?" he asked, spitting a piece of the apple out, in Kagome's disgust. "Is it different from Kyoto?" Kagome smiled and sat down her book.

"I like it. The people here are nice," she opened up her bento box and pushed it over to Miroku. "It's a bit more active then in Kyoto, but I'll get used to it." Miroku raised an eyebrow.

"I've been to Kyoto before, some of the girls there are really pretty…." He said. "But none of them really match up to Sango." Kagome's head turned towards another picnic table not too far, filled with a group of good looking guys, and one girl. Sango. She was the kind of girl that had natural beauty. She did seem talkative from where Kagome sat. She laughed and looked back at Miroku, who was caught staring once again.

"Miroku, stop drooling." Miroku glanced back at her, and then wiped his lips. He tossed the apple to his other hand. Miroku was the kind of man that was popular, but didn't really hang out with one certain group. He was always all over the place, and every one seemed to like his character. He was such a bubbly boy.

"So any guys you have your eyes on?" he asked. "Just ask me, and I'll try to hook you up." Kagome sniffled a laugh. Miroku leaned in, "So what are you going to do about Kouga?"

"I don't know him, so I guess I'll have to tell him no." Miroku raised an eyebrow.

"You'll be the first….this outta be fun to watch. No one has ever turned down Kouga, not ever. He's a charmer," Miroku patted Kagome on the shoulder. "But you're toughie, you can handle it." Kagome laughed again. Miroku had such a great sense of humor. Kagome's eyes traveled to another figure, at the corner of the courtyard. He was also in her lunch, meaning she was still getting weird vibes from him. She stiffened and shivered. Miroku looked at her strangely and then at the figure.

"You wondering about Inuyasha?" he asked, nodding towards the boy. Kagome looked back at him.

"Does he talk much?"

"Not really." Miroku took another bite. "It's such a waste though. I remember when he first came to the school, all the girls went crazy over him. Even Kouga lost his fan club for a couple of months…." Kagome bit the bottom of her lip. "But he wasn't interested in anything, not even the girls." Miroku shrugged.

"Do you know why?" Kagome felt her heart pounding as she asked the question. Did she pity him over some unknown reason?

"I really don't know. Sort of a depressed figure to me. He'll talk when he has to, and he doesn't really make an attempt to make friends. He's like the mysterious kind of guy that most girls fall for in books." Miroku scratched his nose. "Why? Are you interested in him? I mean…girls have even voted him as the best looking guy in school…so I can see why…"

"No. Just curious," Kagome cut in. She shrugged and picked up her bento box. "I just feel like I know him from somewhere?"

"In Kyoto?" Miroku asked. Kagome shrugged again.

"I really don't know…."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She was walking a few feet ahead of him, with her long hair flowing in the wind. She hadn't noticed him yet, a bit clueless if you asked him. When they reached the bridge, she stopped and turned around to face him.

"If you want to walk me home, you can just ask," she said, her fiery eyes looking at him. He blushed, again he was in lost of words with this girl. Pulling on his bag, he roughly ran a hand through his hair.

"I wasn't following you," he mumbled, trying to look pass her. She just stared back and shrugged.

"Alright then," she said cheerfully, turning back around. Inuyasha nervously walked too. She stepped onto the cement railing of the bridge and balanced herself. She turned to Inuyasha and smiled. He turned his head away and continued walking, while she walked on the railing beside him.

"I didn't know you took this way home," she said, taking slow steps. Inuyasha had to slow down his pace to match with hers.

"I decided to. What's it to you?" he knew he sounded a bit rough, but that was just how he was. But she didn't care, she smiled.

"Then you should take this way more often, so you can walk me home." She flashed her beautiful heart capturing smile to him once more, and he could have sworn he was lost in her eyes. He knew he was bright red. Fixing his collar he cleared his throat.

"Why should I? I know nothing about you…" She bit the bottom of her lip, and stopped walking.

"Then ask me," she stretched her arms out and walked even slower.

"Ask me what?"

"You said you know nothing about me, so ask some questions about me!" Inuyasha grinned at her words. It seemed that to her, things could be done so easily. He stuffed his hands deep in his pockets and looked straight ahead.

"What's your name?"

"Kikyou.." she said, replying quickly.

"How old are you?"

"Fifteen."

"When's your birthday?"

"December 18."

"Um….favorite food?"

"Rice balls."

"Lets see….favorite color?"

"Red."

"Favorite…..flower?"

"Red rose."

"Phone number?"

"Why do you want it?" she turned and looked at him, still smiling. Inuyasha looked down at his feet and rubbed the back of his neck. This was hard…

"No reason," he shrugged, and continued walking. Kikyou stared after him as he walked ahead.

"555-1601."

He didn't stop walking, but continued with a big smile on his face. Her name was Kikyou.

Inuyasha jumped at the sound of the ringing bell. He swore and stood up. Now he was getting all these memories back. Wasn't that just great? Standing up, he tossed his lunch in a close by trash can and picked up his bag. Biology was next for him, and of course he had to share that very class with HER. Inuyasha made his way through the halls, as a bunch of students joked around in front of him. He turned the corner and found the door to his classroom.

. Makino-Sensei, was one heck of a teacher. She was always bothering him, about being more active in class. He hated it. As long as he passed the class, he didn't expect himself to be one of those students who rose their hands. Inuyasha walked into the class room and found his seat in the far back corner of the room near the window. Some of the girls chatted with each other happily next to his desk. He sat down and turned his head. He remembered when he use to chase girls. The play boy he was. Maybe his punishment with Kikyou was because of his behavior with women in the pass.

"Excuse me, Fukamori-kun…." He heard a tiny voice. Turning his head, a tiny girl with glasses and pigtails smiled down at him. In her hands, a small box was wrapped in a pink handkerchief. He mentally sighed. She smiled when she noticed that she had gotten his attention. Stretching her arms out to hand him the present she spoke. "Fukamori-kun, I made some cake for you. Please accept it as a gift," she nervously smiled again, while some people in the class turned to watch. Inuyasha stared at the pink gift that she held out to him, and turned his head to face the window.

"I don't eat cake…" he said, coldly. The girl flinched, and pulled back her gift.

"Oh…I understand, sorry for bothering you." As quick as she came, she turned and hurried out of the room, while the class was silent. Inuyasha kept his eyes strained on the window. Another movement in front of him made him look back up, to see HER take a seat two desks in front of him. His heart nearly dropped. She turned and chatted happily with a girl next to her, completely oblivious to what had just happened. Why would she care anyways?

Inuyasha fumbled with his pencil. Damn, he couldn't wait for this class to be over. Makino-Sensei walked in, with her head held high. In her arms, was a pot with a large green plant. She set the pot down on the table and then turned to the class.

"We are starting the lesson of plant biology as of today," she picked up a stack of paper. "You will be given a huge project and term paper, that will be due at the end of this lesson." The class groaned, and all shifted in their seats. Makino-Sensei passed out the packets that included all the tiny projects that were part of the huge project. "Luckily, this assignment allows you to work with a partner, which I have chosen for all of you." The class happily sat up straighter as Makino-Sensei picked up a clipboard.

Inuyasha made a fist. Partners? As long as it wasn't HER, then it would be fine." There were even applauses when some of the names were read out. Inuyasha sat still in his desk. Makino-Sensei stopped shortly, and turned to face him. The feeling of anger bubbled inside of him. Just tell me!

"Fukamori and Higurashi…" she stopped again, and then as if on purpose she gave him a devilish smile. Higurashi? Who the hell was Higurashi? And then he realized it. Of all people, SHE was his partner. For the whole plant crap, he would have to spend time with her. His mind was racing as the class hurried around the room to meet up with their partners, as Inuyasha coldly glared at his desk. Why?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kagome looked around the room, as a bunch of girls grouped up to work near each other. She tucked a lose strand around her ear. So where was her partner? Fukamori? No one came up to her, and she didn't even know anyone's name yet!

"Kagome? Don't you want to work things out with your partner about your project?" Makino-Sensei asked, walking over to her. Kagome smiled and nodded

"But I don't know who Fukamori is…" she said quietly. Makino-Sensei laughed and then nodded.

"Inuyasha!" Kagome's head snapped up and looked towards the back of the room where he sat. No movement was made, and heart started racing again. "Kagome, he's the one sitting back over there…" Makino-Sensei pointed at him. Kagome hugged her books tighter to her chest and nodded. She slowly made her way to the back of the room. She stopped in front of him and smiled.

"Konnichiwa!" she pulled up a desk up to him. "My name's Kagome…." She was cut off short, when he looked straight at her. The eyes, his golden eyes seemed so familiar. "Have we met before?" she suddenly asked out of the blue. His eyes seemed to widened. "I mean…out of school." She set her books on the desk. He wasn't much of a talker, alright. He looked annoyed, make Kagome nervous. "Your name's Inuyasha? That's a cool name…." she trailed off. Maybe she should just stop talking altogether.

Pulling out fresh clean notebook paper, Kagome picked up her pen. Start working…that's all. "Well, I guess on our trip to the botanical garden in two weeks, we can choose a plant to do the diagram on…." She said. "Is that okay with you?" She winced, if she got no answer, she would feel like a complete moron.

"Look…." He started, shocking her. "Lets just split up the work. You do your half and I do mine and not get into each other's way." He stood up, knocking over her books. Kagome stared wide-eyed at him. That was mean.

"But we're supposed to work on the projects together for the presentation…"

"Who cares." Picking up his packet, he walked to a desk across the room and sat down, leaving Kagome alone. She pursed her lips together and stared back down at her work.

"What did I ever do to him?"
