Freedom Together
An Edgar/Sabin one-shot
by Bonnie E.
The world spread before them as they both sat atop the hill. They'd just begun their journey to stop the Empire two days ago, and here, out on the plains south of Kohlingen, the two Figaro brothers decided to stay up together and watch the scenery.
"So...I guess we've finally done what we wanted," Edgar spoke. "It took ten years, but we're finally seeing the world together."
Sabin turned towards his brother. "Yeah, I guess so."
Edgar leaned back and looked up at the stars. "I never imagined I'd ever feel this free."
"It's great, isn't it?" Sabin also laid back. "All alone out here. Listen to the silence."
Edgar chuckled. "I hate silence."
Sabin paused. "Yeah, you do, don't you? Well, I can make noise, if you want."
"No, really. That's not necessary."
"RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!" Sabin shouted into the night.
Edgar hid his face. "I said I hated silence. I didn't say I liked yelling."
Sabin hit Edgar on the arm. "Spoilsport. You're still no fun."
"Oh, I'm not?"
"Yeah."
"Well, then...perhaps I should prove it."
"I dare you," Sabin challenged.
"GREEEEEEEEEE!!!" Edgar yelled at the top of his lungs.
Sabin cupped his hands over his ears. "That is the worst sounding scream I've ever heard. You scream like a girl!"
"Alright...now you've done it." Edgar sat up quickly and pinned Sabin.
"Uh...that was stupid of you," Sabin retorted, then countered Edgar's pin easily.
"Argh! I keep forgetting that I'm no longer the stronger of the two of us..."
Sabin laughed heartily as his brother struggled to rise.
"Listen...Sabin...can't we just...pretend that you're still a weakling?"
"Forget it! This is for all the times you won!"
"...no fair..."
Sabin hit the ground with his hand. "Seven...eight...nine...TEN! I WIN!"
"...of course you do..." Edgar said dryly. He rose when Sabin released him.
Sabin rejoiced a moment, then went back to staring out at the night.
"I'm glad you're here with me," Sabin said. "I thought about you a lot. I worried when I heard you'd sided with the Empire. I'm glad I was wrong about that. And...it's really no fun to travel the world alone."
"I'm eventually going to have to go back, you know? I can't leave Chancellor in charge forever."
Sabin was silent for a noticeable moment. "Yeah, I know that. Despite all this, you're still the king. And you've still got responsibilities, right?"
Edgar nodded, but didn't say anything.
"Say, Edgar..."
"Mmm?"
"You know...do you ever wish you'd won the bet? That it was me that had to go back?"
Edgar shook his head. "I haven't regretted it for a moment."
"No?" Sabin questioned. "You sure? I know I would have."
"It - it was the way it was supposed to be. I can't argue with fate, can I?"
"Guess not."
Edgar stretched. "All this night air is making me tired. I guess I should get some beauty sleep."
"Hmph...why? It's not like you're ever going to actually find a girl or anything."
Edgar hit Sabin on the arm. "Shut up. I hate you."
Sabin laughed. "Good night, brother."
Edgar shook his head and also joined in with Sabin's laughter. "Good night, brother."
A/N: I don't normally post one-shots, but I quite like this one. So I decided to post it up for other people to read, too. I hope you enjoyed it.
