Chapter Three: General Chaos
Before Hermione had a chance to go looking for Tasselhoff, the students from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang were arriving. Although no one could find him the kender was still around. In fact, he went to Hagrid's cottage.
"Wow, it's sure warm in here." Tas sniffed the air. "I wonder what's burning?" Then the little kinder noticed the wisps of smoke coming from inside his vest. Inside was a burning bird. "Oh how did you get in here?" he took the bird out and set him on the floor. "Are you alright?' Tas watched as the phoenix with interest. Several minutes later it was reduced to ashes. Tas lost interest and went to look around his current location.
"Oh! A crossbow!" Tas had found Hagrid's crossbow. "People should leave things laying around. I'll just keep this safe for now…"
The kender wandered out of the cottage and into the garden where there was several large crates. "I wonder what's in these." He jumped on one and pulled it open. Out came a very strange looking critter. "Why would anyone want to lock these creatures up?" Tasselhoff felt duty-bound to unlock every cage and release all the blast-ended skrewts.
Meanwhile, the foreign students were arriving. "Look Harry!" Ron was gesturing to a tall slim wizard coming from the Durmstrang ship. "Its Dalamar Nightson!"
Harry barked enthusiastically.
Hermione rolled her eyes at the boys. "You guys are only impressed with him because he can do a Wonky Feint."
Ron flinched at Hermione's mispronunciation but otherwise ignored her. "I can't believe he's still in school. I didn't think he was that young."
Around them came whispers from the girls in the school. "Oh my god! It's Dalamar and I don't have a single quill on me."
"Do you think he'll sign my hat in lipstick?"
Professor McGonagall turned around and glared at the girls. They became silent quickly when they realized she was looking at them.
"'Ey Hermione. How do you think the Beauxbatons are going to show up?"
Before Hermione had a chance to respond there was a flying something coming into view.
The whispers came back. "Is it broomsticks?"
"Nah it's to big to be broomsticks. Is it a flying house?" The second girl was perhaps the closest to the truth. It was a carriage pulled by winged horses.
Hagrid returned to his cottage before the feast in the Great Hall was to take place. Fang, ever fatefully at his side, found the ashes and began to whimper.
"You great coward. What is it this time?" The half-giant went to investigate. "Dust?" he muttered. "Leave it alone Fang. Lets go check on the skrewts."
Going in to the yard, Hagrid discovered a very uncomfortable thing. The skrewts had escaped. "Where'd they go?"
In the great hall Ron was watching a Beauxbatons girl with great interest. Her hair was night-black tied back with a scarf. The girl had eyes the color of sapphires. Ron couldn't keep his eyes off of her. "Hermione…it's a veela."
Hermione followed Ron's glaze. "Don't be ridiculous Ron. I don't see anyone else staring at her and drooling."
"But…but…" Ron had no time to object as screams of panic came from out side the hall. His eyes were wide in terror as he turned to Hermione. "You don't think they've escaped?"
"Don't be frightened. Just round 'em up!" Hagrid's voice confirmed Hermione and Ron's fears.
"Do ya reckon we should help him?"
"I think Hagrid is doing find on his own," Hermione replied weakly. She was about as eager to face the skrewts as Ron was.
"'Ey Hermione, Ron!" Hagrid had spotted them. "Just herd them back towards their crates."
Ron gulped. "You first."
Nervously, Hermione pulled out her wand and uttered an incantation. A stream of light shot out of her wand and bounced off their hide. As she quickly thought of another spell to try, the headmaster came to the rescue.
While the rest of the school was busy with the creatures he unleashed, Tas had found coffin. "Oooo…I wonder what's in here." He opened it and found a beautiful goblet. A slip of parchment just happened to be sticking out of the cup. On an impulse, Tas wrote his name on it.
A thump came from behind. "What are you doing?" A grizzled old man missing half his nose was behind him.
Tas looked as innocent as possible. "Nothing." The piece of parchment slid out of his hand and fell into the goblet. A quick burst of fire consumed it.
"Give me that goblet and get out off here." The man was so serious, so creepy; he managed to slightly frighten Tas into doing as he was told.
All the skrewts had finally been rounded up. And Dumbledor turned his attention to the dog following him around. "I see you've out done yourself this time Harry." With a quick flick of his wand and incantation, Harry was back to himself again.
"Thank you professor." Harry was relived to be back on two legs again.
"Try to stay out of trouble this time Harry." The headmaster looked distracted for a moment. "Now, where did I put my hat?"
Author's Notes: Sorry it took me so long to get this finished. Naturally I kept loosing the papers I wrote the chapter on. If you guys like Lord of the Rings, you should go check out the fic by Weisthecheese. It looks like it's going to be funny. Thanks for your reviews and as I can't get online right now I'm not going to reply to each individually. But here are some general answers for you guys.
Review Responses:
Spelling: Sorry about my lousy spelling in the previous chapters. I'm working on it. And no I will not make a fool out of my story and myself by intentionally misspelling everything. You know who you are. Character crossovers: I figured out a plot that will enable me to cross over more characters from the Dragonlance series. However, due to the timeline difference, you will have to bear with me and ignore timelines in the Dragonlance books for this to work. Umm…I think those were the major points you guys commented on. Please keep reviewing and letting me know what to work on. Thank you.
