Disclaimer: I don't own Dawson's Creek. Der.
A/N: Read it. Thank you Kelc and everyone else for review. I'm back with an update -yay me-. So read on.
Pacey and Joey sat on a nearby doc that was behind the camp away from Lake Witchita. Joey looked ahead at the water seeming content--her feet slowly swaying left to right through the water. Pacey looked at her somberly. She finally glanced at his face and tried to look back toward the water but her eyes just darted back to him. She couldn't tell what he was thinking. Not that she ever could, but she just wished for a moment that the whole "knowing" him thing would come in handy. Maybe she would know what to say to him in this situation. In this case she thought that maybe some one-one-one time between the two of them, at a peaceful place no less, might help him out of his slump. She liked talking to him anyway.
"Why are we here Jo?" Pacey finally asked breaking the silence. His voice almost whispering.
"Because...this is where I like to sit to have some peace and quiet you know? Just to get my thoughts together. (pause) "It sort of reminds me of the creek."
"Or the boy from the creek."
"No just the creek. God, Capeside is really beautiful."
"Whatever you say."
"FYI...
"FYI?"
"Yeah. For Your Information. Get it?"
"My god, you've been hanging around that Buffy chic to long. She's been scrambling your verbal skills."
"Anyways...*FYI* Dawson and I are over, and ok with it."
"Well for your information, you and Dawson may be over--but you will never be "ok" with it."
"Whatever Pacey."
"I speak the truth."
"Oh really."
He nods.
"Well then, tell me why you're so gloomy."
"Me gloomy? Nah."
"Yep. Is this still about Andie?"
"Can't I cope Potter?"
"Fine. Cope away."
"Thank you."
"But I just thought you should know that I'm not going to let you mope around."
"I am so not moping."
"Oh you are so moping."
"Fine what are you suggesting?"
"I suggest that we do what Andie suggested."
"Great, so you don't wanna hang out with me anymore either."
"I said *we* jarhead. Actually I was going to suggest that we hang out more often."
"Why?"
"Because I dig you a little alright. Not to mention...I don't like seeing you sad."
He smiles widely.
"Well then, you'll just have to spend more time with me Potter."
"Who knows...you and I may even be friends by the time the summers over."
"Maybe."
"Try to cooperate with me Witter. I'm actually trying to be nice, by the way how am I doing?"
"Not bad."
"Not bad for an ice queen?"
"If you and I are going to be friends, you're going to have to get over our past jousting matches."
"I'll try." She says wryly.
"So should we hug or something?" He asks looking away.
"I don't think so."
"It was worth a try."
"Not really."
"So ya dig me little?"
"In a friendly sense of course."
"Rigght."
"Hey--
"Hey I'm a free agent, I can make inappropriate comments all I want now."
"Shut up."
"Joey...
"Now before you start, I would just like to remind you that you are very rebound skank right now. So any passive aggressive little sexual innuendo diatribes you have to throw at me will not--I repeat will not--be taken seriously. Follow?"
"I didn't understand a word you just said. In most part because you were rambling."
"I was so not rambling."
"Oh you so were. (pause)"You know...you ramble when you're nervous."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning...am I making you nervous?"
"Why would you be making me nervous?" She asks confused.
Pacey quickly shakes off the thought that she may be interested in him in that way. He didn't know why he'd brought it up. Maybe she was feeling the same butterflies that he felt when ever he was near her, or face-to-face with her. Once he shook it off, he notices she is silent and still looking at him. They stare at each other long enough for Joey to suddenly begin feeling butterflies. *Look at those eyes* She thought to herself. *look away* She thought. She pulls away from the awkward stare just before Jack approaches.
"There you are." Jack says stepping directly behind her. Joey and Pacey look up quickly.
"Hey Pacey." He says still looking at Joey.
"Hey, your sister dumped me." He says getting up and walking away.
"What?" He asks spinning around in the direction Pacey was headed.
"So what's up?" She asks standing up.
"Nothing, it's just the girls missed you."
"Well...*I* missed you." She says taking his hands.
"Oh, really?"
"Yes, really."
"And what are you going to do about it exactly?" Jack asks, going with the game.
"This." She says leaning in to kiss him.
He pulls away before she can kiss him.
"What's wrong?" She asks embarrassed
"Are you using me?" He asks, his expression grim.
"What--no. Of course not. For what?"
"Jen told me that you and the rest of the girls made a bet to see who could lose their virginity first."
Joey just looks dumbfounded.
"Well..." He looks at her hoping it was some kind of sick joke.
"Jack I wasn't trying to use you at all."
"So then it's true. Why?"
"Look it has absolutely nothing to do with you Jack."
"And when you say that you weren't *trying* to use me...does that mean that you were going to anyway?"
The thought had crossed her mind a million times. She *was* using him to not only win the bet, but to in fact "get it over with". She thought that Jack was the perfect person if not Dawson. She didn't want to lie to him. So she didn't say a word.
"Joey?"
"I'm so sorry Jack."
You can see the confusion and disappointment rising in his face. He just chuckles harshly and walks away. Joey feels tears welling up in her eyes. *How could I even think to take advantage of a so-called friend like that* she thought overcome with guilt.
"Jack." She whispers in the wind. *********************************
Joey storms into the girls cabin clearly disturbed. Andie, who was putting on some earrings looked up startled.
"Joey, what's the matter?"
"Where's Jen?" She asks quickly.
"I'm right here." Jen says, walking in from the back way of the cabin.
"Why the hell did you tell Jack?"
"Tell Jack what?" Andie and Jen ask in unison.
"That I was using him for the bet. Ring any bells?"
"Wait I--
"You were going to use Jack?!" Andie interrupts Jen in shock.
"It wasn't like that Andie." Joey says jadedly.
"Then what was it like? Joey, you know Jack's not like that." Andie says more calm.
"I-I know Andie. It's just...he seemed like the only option."
"Whatever. Jen, we have to go. The kids are already on their way to the dance."
"Joey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to screw up any chances that you had with Jack."
"Right." She says running her hand through her hair.
"So have you?" She asks before they walk out of the door.
"Have I what?"
"Gotten it over with--with Chris I mean."
"No such luck."
"Right. I'll see you guys there."
"Yeah. Hey Joey."
"Yeah?"
"I really didn't mess up your clothes I swear to Rob."
"I didn't really think so. I think Abby did it just to piss me off you know." She says chuckling.
"I do too. Anyway, see you at the dance."
"Yeah."
Jen and Andie leave Joey alone in the cabin to head to the where the dance was being held.**************************************************************
Andie and Jen walks into the dance side by side. The room is filled with kids and counselors alike. The middle of the floor is totally clear, not many kids are dancing. And all the counselors are talking to each other instead of watching the kids. Pacey and Jack are standing together each drinking a coke. Abby is talking to buffy and Lena who is standing next to Chris, who is heading over toward Jen. Jen just passes him up and heads toward the punch bowl. Andie just stands alone not daring to look over at Pacey who is staring her up and down. *Oh boy* She thinks to herself as she walks away to a group of girls. Joey walks in and Pacey's face lights up. She smiles at him gently and walks over to him.
"Pacey." She says grabbing a cup of punch.
"Josephine."
"Don't call me that. So what are you doing?"
"Dishes. What does it look like I'm doin' Potter, I'm standing here--(looks around) apparently alone, maneuvering the newest dance craze--ladies and gentlemen! Please give a round of applause to Pacey Witter the worlds *biggest* reject. So pacey now that you've accomplished your fathers and your life goal, what do you plan on doing now? Oh Dan, I plan to stand here and wait for Joey Potter to do me the favor in hitting me over the head with that there ladle--putting me out of my misery.
"Pacey--
"See I would have gotten Jack to do it, but for some strange reason he walked away as soon as you came over. So what's up with that Potter?"
Joey just looks at Jack who shoots her a quick glance and continues over to where Andie is standing. She just shrugs her shoulders.
"Haven't a clue." *************************************
Hey I dig feedback just as much as the next person. So if you're reading my sh** review it. Or flame it-- whatever strikes your fancy.
