A/N: Thank you Kelc for the review I appreciate it muchly. Here is chapter 10! This is huge! Ok I'm cool. here is the mark of an entire story -yay me- READ ON.
The dance has been going on for 45 minutes now . Pacey and Joey had been talking the entire time. Andie, Jen, and Jack stood over by the entrance. Abby and Buffy are not to far a distance from Pacey and Joey, they sat on chairs. While Pacey and Joey still stand. Buffy can't see to take her attention off of Jen.
"Can you believe her? She obviously has *no* intention of concluding the bet. "
"What are you talking about half-wit?" Abby asks sharply. She's been eavesdropping on Pacey and Joey's conversation.
"Jen." She says pointing at Jen.
"Oh right. Don't worry she's on it."
"Somehow I doubt that. I mean she's been practically ignoring Chris. "
"How do you know?"
"Did you see that snub earlier? She walked, like right past him."
"Maybe she's taken interest in Adam." She says chuckling.
"I'm serious, if she does nothing I'm pulling out."
"What part of YOU CAN'T PULL OUT don't you understand. Your money's in. If she doesn't succeed, we lose simple as that. And that's not going to happen, so I guess we just have to be patient and wait until she decides when it's right."
"And is that going to happen any time this leap year? Or this month for that matter, we are leaving remember? Or does the Zoloft make you forget such things."
"Listen, I already told you the way its going. Now, you can pull out, but you'll just be leaving your dollars behind. Follow?"
"Whatever. Just talk to her, see where she's at with this whole thing. Tell her to quit being a weak and just get it over with for bitching out loud."
"Fine. When the dance is through, and Jerry's kids are safe in they're little cabins."
"Lovely." *****************
"Jennifer?" One of the little girls call.
"Yeah? And it's just Jen ok sweetheart?"
"Ok. How do you get one of the boys to dance with you?"
"Depends on the boy."
"What do you mean?"
"Which boy is it?"
"Tommy."
"Ah the too quiet, and mysterious Tommy. Well you just walk up to him and say...and say...do you wanna dance with me?" She says unsure.
"Nope."
"Nope, what?"
"I already tried that and he said no."
"Well then you just forget about him and move on to next pretty boy."
"I don't want to dance with a pretty boy. I wanna dance with Tommy."
"Well maybe he doesn't like you--
"Huh?" The girl asks tears welling up.
"I mean maybe you're just not his type--oh god, I'm terrible at this."
Jack sees that Jen obviously bad at the pep talks so he cuts in.
"Maybe you should try again and this time-if he says no- ask him why."
"Ok I'll try again. But if he says no, you're gonna be my private dancer for the rest of the night got it?" The girls says poking him in the chest.
"Ok ok...what's your name?"
"Angel."
"Angel. What a coincidence."
Angel smiles and heads toward Tommy.
"Isn't that cute."
"Not really Jack. I almost made the poor kid cry. I suck at this."
"At what?"
"At the whole kids thing. I don't think that it's really for me ya know?"
"Oh Jen...you know what I think?" He asks putting his hand on her shoulder.
"What?"
"Don't have kids for a while. Do your un-fertilized eggs a favor."
"Shut up." She says slapping his shoulder.
"Guess what."
"What?"
"I talked to Joey."
"Good. About What?"
"About the bet."
"Oh yeah-yeah the bet. (sips Pepsi) So what did she say?"
"She was using me."
"Jack...
"No, it's umm--it's cool. I'll get over it."
"You know what I say we blow this town."
"We can't do that Jen. Besides I we haven't gotten our checks yet."
"It was meant as a figure of speech Jack. I mean lets leave the dance. I'm bored out of wits."
"But we're supposed to be here to watch the kids."
"I think that the other ten counselors will do just fine with out us. And besides they have already done the conga. Next thing you know they're going to start doin' the bump or worse...the bunny hop."
"Are those dances or un-identified species."
"I don't know but lets just go--pleassee."
"Fine... Fine."
"I didn't know I was so persuasive."
"You're not but the bunny hop thing didn't sound like to much fun.
"Lets plow." ***********************************
An hour had passed and Jen was right, Cameron had convinced all the kids and counselors to do everything from the bump, the bunny hop, to the hokey pokey. Joey and Abby refused to join what had seemed to be the lamest assault on dance since the Macarena. Abby folded her arms leaning against the punch table, while Joey stood to her right drinking ginger ale.
"So Joey...
"Don't start."
"Fine. I was just wondering how things were going--you know with the bet apparently on a sudden hiatus." She says smirking.
"Fine."
"Really? Because I heard through the grape vine that you were preying on my future husband."
"Who?"
"A certain Greek god we both know and fancy."
"You fancy Jack?" Joey asks grinning in surprise.
"He's alright. Moving on, he just left with Jenny."
"What?" She scans the room noticing that in fact Jen and Jack were no longer present.
She just looks back at Abby and rolls her eyes.
"Maybe she can lay Jack." She says in a fake gasp.
"Shut up Abby."
"Why are you so upset? I thought you were switching to the suddenly single Pacey Witless."
"He's not witless."
"That's cute--you taking up for your boy toy."
"I'm not trying to hook up with Pacey."
"My god, you and Jen are on a fast track to slutville. First Jen snakes Jack from you. And now you're trying to nail Andie's leftovers. Here's a little newsflash for you Jojo, I wouldn't grope where Andie Mcphee gropes."
"Abby somewhere out there there's a lonely leg that needs to be humped. Why don't you get on that?
"Hump yourself hose bag." She says walking away."
Pacey suddenly runs over and grabs Joey by the hips and swings her over to the restarted conga line.
"Pacey what are you doing?!"
"Come on Joey. Let's have a little fun."
"No Pacey let me go now!" She struggles away.
"Potter don't tell me that you really do protest against having a good time?"
"Only when it's insincere."
"What are you talking about?" He asks while walking back to the table.
"Oh like you didn't notice a certain ex-girlfriend across the room."
"That's crazy talk woman."
"Right. Look my cabin of kids are about to head out, I'm gone."
"Bye."
"Bye."
"I guess we'll have more friendly conversation later huh?" He asks sarcastic.
"If you want." She says walking out with a bunch of girls. ************************************************* Andie quickly takes her confused glance at Pacey elsewhere when he looks at her back. Lena walks over and taps Andie on the shoulder.
"Hello." She says behind her.
"Hi." She turns around.
"Did you see that stunt Pacey just pulled?"
"Uh huh."
"And, how do you feel about that?"
"Hey I dumped him remember, he's just venting, trying to have a little fun. I don't blame him."
"Yeah but with Joey?"
"Let it go Lena. I've asked him about Joey before, he doesn't think of her that way."
"You have? Why?"
"Well there's some obvious attraction there...and besides he told that he kissed her once, but there was nothing there."
"Whatever you say."
With that Lena walks away simply. She wasn't really trying to mess with Andie's mind or anything, she just wanted to understand why she was taking it so lightly that her ex boyfriend was hanging around with her good friend. She just let it go and continued walking away. Andie grabbed Christy and some other girls hand and made her way out of the church where they were holding the dance. Pacey took another swig of punch and turned around only to see Andie too was now gone. He just sighed and continued over to the other guys. **************************************************************************** ************
Joey stood in front of the room mirror brushing her hair preparing for bed. Andie was already asleep, and Jen had yet to return. A sound from outside by the door makes Joey jump a little. She slowly walks in the direction of the door. She opens the door leaving the screen door still closed and locked. She looks outside and scans the outside. But only the crickets stand present. She closes the door back, but hears the noise again. She opens the door more quickly this time--nothing. Right when she's about to close it again, Pacey jumps out of a nearby bush.
"Boo!"
She screams.
"Pacey!" She whispers almost squealing looking around to make sure Andie was still asleep. She only turned over sleepily. She walks out closing the door behind her.
"What do you want?"
"Nothing, really. Just to talk."
"What--you haven't made any friends here?"
"Have you?"
"Well--
"Thought so."
"Well it's different, I'm not exactly a social butterfly such as yourself." She says sitting down.
"Well, I guess I'm kind of cool with Jimmy."
"So go--go talk to him. Have fun." She says getting up.
"Wait..." He says taking her hand.
She turns around swiftly, turning to him face-to-face.
"w-what is it Pace?" She says her temperature suddenly rising at the touch of his hand.
"What--um what do you want to do tomorrow? You know, when we get our breaks."
"I guess we can eat lunch together again, and talk...or whatever."
"Cool."
"Cool." She says looking down at the hand that he still hadn't let go. "My hand..."
"Oh right." He says letting go.
"'Night."
"Goodnight."
She just smiles and walks back into the cabin. Pacey stands there rubbing his hands through his hair. He definitely still had a thing for Joey Potter, he just couldn't and wouldn't express it under the circumstances. For now, he was just going to have to suppress it until--until when ever he felt it was right. But he wanted that moment to come soon. He began walking away shaking off the chills he'd got from just holding her hand. Jen passed him hurriedly.
"Hey where were you Lindley." He asks stopping in his tracks.
"Playing catch-up with Jack."
"Oh, well nighty night."
"Cute. Goodnight. Oh hey--what are you doing here?"
"Huh?" "Well I thought that you and Andie were over."
"Yeah word travels fast right. I was just saying goodnight to Joey, you know making sure no weirdoes popped out of the bushes or something. The freaks come out at night ya know."
"Obviously."
"Hey now, are you referring to me or you with that last snide remark Lindley?"
"Go to your cabin."
"As you wish."
And with that Jen continues into the cabin as Pacey disappears into the night. ******************************************************************
