Skies of Dust

Chapter One- The Collision of Wolf

We silently watched in awed terror as the comet the scientists had officially dubbed as "Wolf" made its laborious decent towards the earth. I clutched my mother's neck as she held me protectively and cried into her dark brown hair. I was merely five at that time, my blond hair hung in loose pigtails that slapped my back as we ran, and my clothes consisted of blue jean shorts and a small pink t-shirt with the word "princess" scrawled across the chest in sparkling yellow letters. My face was dotted with freckles and my eyes were of the purest blue. I had my Daddy's eyes, or so everyone told me.

When we first heard of the comet, and it's catastrophic after affects, we had fled from our small home in Toledo, Ohio by car since all the planes were booked, and headed south. We now stand somewhere near Jacksonville, Georgia, our faces turned upward, as we watched the comets slow advancements. My mother whispered words of comfort into my ear as she herself sobbed uncontrollably. The sky had become dark since the first impact and all the light we were provided with came in a harsh blue glow from the comet itself.

A scream from behind her seemed to bring my mother back to her senses and she whirled around and took off through the crowds of people shoving them out of her way if they didn't move in time. I did not question this sudden change in events, but held on as tight as I could. We ran for what seemed like hours and I began to wonder where my mother had adopted this source of energy, as it had never been there before, right as we heard a magnified voice sound up ahead.

"Over here!" it screamed over and over again, and we raced off towards it. "If you want to live come here! There is a bunker that will protect you!"

"Oh thank God," I heard my mother gasp, and she began to run faster. Above us, there was a roar that made my ears ring for days after word. The comet had broken through the earth's atmosphere. I saw it all as if in slow motion; the comet seemed to be racing my mother and I began to scream from the pure intensity of it all. The sound of the impact was even louder than the first roar and I felt as though my ears would explode. We arrived in the bunker right as the pressure from the impact sent the people behind us flying out of sight, and I still remember the look of sheer terror I saw on each one of those faces, from over my mother's shoulder. The door closed and darkness infolded us.
