We're Back, Chapter Thirty-Five
.
.
A fuzzy feeling lingered in Mynee's mouth, the unpleasant after taste of the poison she had consumed. She let out a faint groan and rubbed
her eyes, thinking that it had all been a dream and she would wake up next to Draco. She pushed herself up; her hands meeting rough ground that
definitely not her bed. She blinked rapidly as her vision cleared a faint meep slipping from between her lips. The landscape was quite bare, just
leagues and leagues of orangey white sand. The sky and everything around her was just a shade or two lighter than the ground and a shiver ran
through her at the blandness of this place. She stood up and brushed the dust away from her bum as she wrapped her arms around herself.
"This is Death..." She muttered quietly. "Not at all what I expected."
"It's not what any of us expected."
She jumped and let out another peep, whipping her head around. Behind her were all the people who had ever died. A gasp escaped her as her
hands flew to her mouth, her hues skimming over the sheer billions congregating before her. A young girl with her hair in two plaits on either side of
her head and a summer dress looked up at her with innocent eyes, a childish smile on her face.
"Most of us thought that there was something else after we died, but we were all wrong...just this place."
Mynee wrapped her arms around her abdomen as she looked around. "This place...how can I find someone I'm looking for?"
The girl ignored her and seemed to concentrate on her belly. "You aren't supposed to be here yet. Why are you here? The one within you has
unfulfilled duties that must be accomplished. Why are you here??" Her voice grew in pitch and volume until all around her were cowering slightly.
Mynee's brow furrowed. "What are you talking about?? My baby is dead, just like me..." It surprised her that saying those words did not hurt her
like they would have in Life.
Come to think of it, that soul crushing depression she had felt not moments before was completely and utterly gone. Sure, there was a little bit of
sadness still inside of her, but that was to be expected. She had not felt this happy and carefree since she was a small child.
"Just because you are here doesn't mean you are dead."
"But I took that potion..."
"It is not your time yet. You will have to return until your scheduled death day comes around."
"How long do I have??"
"I cannot say. Not much longer considering you are greatly missed and wanted in the Life."
Mynee snorted darkly. "Someone actually cares about me? That's a massive surprise. I was utterly alone when I died."
"Death knocks many people to their senses. I say you have close to an hour before you and you child disappear."
"Where is it?"
"Your babe?"
She nodded. "Still within your spirit. If you had been truly dead, you would have absorbed the life force. She resides within you and will return to
her own body when you enter Life."
Mynee sighed softly. "I really need to find someone, would you pass the word along for every person named Hermione or that was a Vampyre
needs to come to me? I need to talk to someone."
The little girl looked up to her and nodded again. "That I will do for you." With that, she turned and disappeared within the crowd.
Mynee sighed quietly and wrapped her hazy arms around her mid-section. She slowly lowered herself on the ground, preparing herself for a wait.
Draco stared emptily down at the cold corpse, several of his fingertips lightly touching her still cheek. Mynee's body had been brought into
the Hospital Wing several days before and was hidden in a far off corner. Madame Pomfrey had stuck her nose up at it and muttered something
under her breath on how she expected this would happen. He had spent his days off here and the rest of the time after class, sitting beside her
like he had that time she got a Quidditch injury. He could not believe how stupid he had been. He had seen her write in that bloody diary so many
times and he still was not able to see the difference between the two. He had found her true one under her bed, right where she said it would be,
and had read every page of it. She had never committed the crime he had accused her of. Her journal had been so warm and happy in the
beginning, but once it hit the end of March was full of pain and loneliness. She had tried to handle the stress of being all alone and carrying a child
no one wanted, but it had become too much when Montague forsook her. He clenched his other hand hard as he heard someone yelling.
"I know she's here! Just let me see her!"
"Mr. Weasley return to your common room this instant! She is not here!"
"Then where is she? She hasn't been to any of her classes in over a week! That's not like Hermione!"
Draco's blood boiled suddenly as he burst out of the enclosed space, his silvery blue eyes burning with fierce hatred.
"Why do you care? Where the hell were you when she needed you? Oh that's right, you were with Potter! How could I have forgotten all the times
she cried because she was so lonely?"
"Malfoy? What are you doing here?"
"None of your fucking business Weasley!"
"You hurt her, didn't you?!"
"No more than you did!"
The young red haired man threw himself at Draco, his own dark blue eyes blazing with anger. Something had happened that had forced him to see
where his true loyalties lay with his friends. The two boys wrestled on the floor, both trying to seriously injure the other. It was not until they
realized at nearly the exact same moment that they realized that their fighting was pointless. Their minor battle would not bring Hermione back in
Draco's case and would not reveal her location for Ron. They drew apart and merely stared at each other, coming to a silent truce.
"She's dead." The blond said simply, deep pain and suffering coming to light in his silvery eyes.
"Dead?" The other squeaked weakly, trying to comprehend the entirety of that single word.
"Killed herself and...and our baby."
"Baby?"
"Yeah, it was all my fault.
"Mine too, I shouldn't have ignored her. She was mine before the year started...I should've never listened to Harry."
"She really did kill Voldemort and she figured out all of the riddles."
Ron shook his head slowly. "I know; Harry and I were unconscious. She was the only one who could've done it. I just believed so much, like
everyone else, that he was the single living person who could defeat him."
"Hermione was special. She defied all the odds and still came out last."
The two boys were quiet for a moment until their eyes met. "May I see her?" The red head asked meekly.
Draco nodded and motioned with his hand. "Yeah..."
The moment Ron saw her he began to cry softly, silent tears streaming down his freckled cheeks. He did nothing to stop their steady descent
across his flesh.
"Merlin, she looks like she's asleep...how'd she go?"
"The Poción de la Muerte." Ron looked at him in confusion. "It's the strongest poison known to wizarding kind. She wouldn't have died otherwise."
"Huh? She's just as human as the rest of us, a simple slash of the wrists would have worked as well."
"You didn't know? Well that figures with the way you treated her." There was a tense silence between them until Draco pressed on. "She was a
Vampyre."
"You mean Vampire, right?"
"No Weasel, Vampyre. It's a different species all together. They had the same ancestors but the single race morphed into two. She would have
only died if she got her head cut off or was burnt to death."
Ron blinked slowly and his eyes rested on the far too pale and still face below him. He gently brushed his fingers against her belly and then her
cheek, infinite sadness on his normally jovial face. "I never got to say goodbye or that I was sorry. I wish she would just come back. I've missed
her so much. I always cared about her, you know? Even when Harry told me to ignore her...I never could all the way. It hurt too much."
"Potter is insane. He tried to kill her during the last Quidditch game. I wish she had been here for the Cup. At least Hufflepuff still won with their
reserve Seeker."
The two boys settled down into the chairs on either side of the narrow cot and began to talk, all of their differences set aside as they wallowed in
their mutual grief.
Mynee raked her hands through her hair as she looked at the great multitudes of Vampyres standing in front of her, all of them looking at
her as if she was some wonderful, awe sticking being. She sucked in a lungful of the slightly stale air and skimmed the masses.
"I really need to talk to Hermione Drakula! Does anyone know where she is? It's really important!" Everyone before her shook their heads, eager to
be of help to this not so dead creature before them. "None of you have seen her since you passed? Are you sure? I'm sure some of you have. Oh
Goddess this is hard!" Her eyes suddenly widened as she said that.
What if there was no Goddess? This place seemed to prove that they were alone and there was no higher figure watching out for them. Perhaps
this was Hell; it would make more sense of all the millions of people. But then again why would a child of mine be sent here? What could he or she
have done in their short life span? A shiver ran through her as she wrapped her arms around her still slender form.
"Look, please just send the word along? It is of great importance that I see..."
"Me?"
She whipped around and looked into a pair of warm amber eyes. She heaved a great sigh and rubbed her eyes with her hands. "Please tell me you
are Hermione Drakula, wife of Nikolas Drakula? I've been looking for you for..."
"Almost an hour, I know." The woman interrupted.
"I don't have much time left before I have to go back, but all I know is that you have to come with me. Our race is almost dead. There are a scant
hundred of us left. The Vampires have nearly wiped us all out. Nikolas sent me here to return you to the world of the Living. Though I don't really
understand why he couldn't just come back for you..."
"We share the same names, only when two people share names can they both return. My husband knew that your time was not for a long while. It
would have been safe for you to come here and you would return. I am not supposed to go back though, my time has past."
"You don't understand! You have to come back! Our species will die out completely if you don't!! Your husband needs you! You are a direct
descendent of Gwendolyn! Without you we will all perish. Please..." It was then her form began to get smokier than it had been since she
entered Death and she knew she was about to leave. "I'm not going back empty handed! You are coming with me whether you like it or not." She
said, determination sparkling in her cinnamon hues.
She leant forward and just before she literally twinkled out, her arms wrapped tightly around the woman's shoulders, bringing her along for the ride.
Mynee could not help but feel slightly sad that she was returning to an empty life where she would be completely alone again, but there was an
odd flicker of hope deep within her that told her everything would be all right. She wanted to believe that it told her the truth and was not trying
to crush her even more.
