HIEI'S TWINS

CHAPTER FIVE
Nightfall in the Torle Forest. In the clearing, the Rei Kai Tantei and their two young charges are sitting around the campfire after defeating the demons that attacked them earlier and were eating the food the twins brought along in comfortable silence.
"Mmm. That was good. *Burp!*" Yusuke blushed at the loud sound.
The twins giggled.
"Jeez, Urameshi. Could you get anymore disgusting?" Kuwabara asked.
Yusuke released another loud belch as his reply.
The twins, Kurama, and Yusuke laughed as Kuwabara glared at him before smiling himself at Yusuke's antics.
"Hey, where'd Hiei go?" Yusuke asked looking around for the fire demon.
"I'm sure he's around here somewhere. Probably went to patrol the area to make sure we don't have any uninvited guests sneaking up on us." Kurama said.
"Oh." Yusuke replied.
The twins took out two towels and stood up.
"Unc-,erm, I mean Yusuke. Bijin and I are going to take a bath in the hot springs. We'll be back." Dante told his uncle pointing to a narrow path behind them.
"I don't think you two should go by yourselves." Yusuke said starting to stand up.
Bijin held up her hand to stop him.
"We'll be fine. You seem to forget we're demons just like you and we can watch out for ourselves. Besides, the hot springs is just a few feet away. If anything happens that we can't handle, we call out to you. Okay?" She told him.
Yusuke thought about it. The twins were right they could take care of themselves with all the power they possessed, but still, they were family and he would always be worried about them.
He reluctantly sat back down. "Alright. Be careful and if something happens, you guys yell and I meant it." He said sternly.
The twins smiled at their uncle's concern.
"We will." They replied and started off down the path and soon disappeared from site.
"Are you sure letting them go off on their own like was a good idea, Urameshi?" Kuwabara asked looking at the path before turning back to his comrades.
Yusuke smiled with pride.
"Yeah. Dante and Bijin may be small, but they can hold their own." He answered.
"I can see why. They are Hiei's son and daughter after all." Kurama said looking at Yusuke.
Yusuke and Kuwabara both gasped and snapped their attention to Kurama.
"Kurama, how did you?" Yusuke started to ask.
"I didn't. You just told us." Kurama replied.
Yusuke blinked then chuckled.
"You sly bastard." Kurama smiled in response.
"Huh? What does he mean Urameshi?" Kuwabara asked looking back and forth between Yusuke and Kurama.

At the hot springs, the twins are having an interesting conversation of their own.
"Bijin? Do you..do you think that Hiei could be..our father?" Dante asked his twin.
"I don't know, Ni-chan. What makes you think that he would be?" She asked him.
"We look so much like him especially me and he's a lot more protective of us than uncle Yusuke is."
"True. But, if he is our father, why hasn't he told us who he is?"
"I don't know, Bijin. Maybe he wants to wait until we rescue mama to tell us that he's our dad. But, then again, it could be just wishful thinking."
"I hope he is our father, Ni-chan." Bijin smiled while looking down at her reflection.
Dante looked at his sister.
"I'm serious, Ni-chan. Hiei already looks after us and protects us like mama and uncle Yusuke do, if not more so. But, that's not why I hope he's our dad."
"Its not?" "Uh,uh. Its his smell. Haven't you picked it up?"
"Mama's scent on him? Yeah, I have. I mean its very faint, but its there. It would be great if he was our dad huh, B-chan?" Dante asked with a smile.
"Yeah."

"So, Dante and Bijin really are Hiei's children?" Kuwabara asked.
"Yeah." Yusuke replied.
"And Akari is there mother?" Kurama asked.
"Yeah. The twins for born six months after Akari left six years ago. She was still pregnant when she left. She didn't have a miscarriage, but she concealed the truth. No one other than me and Koenma knew the truth." Yusuke told them.
"But, Hiei's their father. Granted, he's a jerk, but he's still their dad. He should have been told. Why would Akari do that?" Kuwabara asked clearly confused by Akari's actions.
"Because of Hiei reaction to the news she was pregnant." Kurama said.
"Surely you noticed how Hiei's demeanor changed when Akari told us she was pregnant. Hiei was acting like it was the end of the world and didn't hide it. Now, imagine how you would feel if the man you loved suddenly wasn't happy that he was going to be a father?" Kurama asked looking at Kuwabara.
"Oh. I see what you mean." Kuwabara replied.
"Akari was so hurt that I was actually have thoughts of killing Hiei. She's my twin and I felt so much sadness and confusion flooding her aura that I couldn't stand it and I knew Hiei felt it too, but the bastard acted like he didn't give a damn. Akari told me and Koenma that the baby was fine and made us promise not to say anything to anyone about it because she didn't want Hiei to think she got pregnant just to trap him in a relationship with her." Yusuke said looking down in fire before he continued.
"I was there when Akari gave birth to the twins, when they learned to walked, said their first words, their birthdays. That should have been Hiei's job, but Akari refused to go to him and let him know." Yusuke told them.
"And all because of Hiei's reaction to her pregnancy." Kurama said.
"But, sooner or later, Hiei will discover the truth. But, until then, you two don't say anything about the twins to him,okay? I promised Akari that I wouldn't say anything and now, I want you to promise me." Yusuke said.
Kurama and Kuwabara nodded.
"But, hey. Wait a minute, what about the twins? Don't they know Hiei's their father?" Kuwabara asked.

Back at the springs, the twins are quietly thinking when Dante's eyes snapped open. Bijin looked her brother.
"What's the matt-" Bijin stopped when his brother motioned for her to be quiet.
Dante turned his head to look to his left and relaxed.
"I know you there, Hiei-san." Dante said.
A pair of glowing red eyes appeared in the darkness of the forest and out stepped Hiei.
"Hiei-kun." Bijin said clearly happy to see him.
"What are you two doing at here alone?" Hiei asked sitting down on the small piles of rocks on the side of the hot springs.
"Aw, don't worry about us. We can take care of ourselves and Yusuke said to yell if anything happened." Bijin said looking at the fire demon.
"And you're here now. We're perfectly safe." Dante said getting his towel and getting out of the hot springs to dry off.
"Can ask you two a question. Who is your father?" Hiei asked.
The time had come to find out the origin of the twins.
"We don't know." Dante answered.

"NANI?! What do you mean they don't know?" Kuwabara asked them.
"Akari didn't tell them that Hiei's their father. She just told them that he was alive and that he was away. She also told them about Hiei's life and the adventures we've had and such, but Akari didn't tell them his name or what he looked like." Yusuke replied.

"Mama also told us he loves us everyday even though he wasn't there. We know our father loves us even when mom doesn't tell us. Want to know how we know?" Bijin asked Hiei after she and her brother had gotten dressed and sat on the ground in front of the pile of rocks Hiei was perched upon.
"How do you know?" Hiei asked looking at them.
"Because mama loves him. You can see it in her eyes and hear it in her voice when she speaks of him. That lets us know that our papa loves us just as much as mama does. So, we love him just as much too." Dante said proudly.
Hiei swallowed the lump in his throat. He was about to ask the question that would reveal the truth about the twin's birth.
"Your mother? Who is she?" He asked them.
The twins looked at each other then back at Hiei with puzzled expressions.
"Didn't you know? Our mother is-"
"So there you guys are." Yusuke said appearing at the hot springs, cutting on off Dante's reply.
"You two were taking so long I got worried and came to get you. Its late and you two need to hit the sack." Yusuke told them.
"You interrupted our discussion, detective." Hiei told him through clenched teeth.
"Well, sorry. But, its past the twins bed time. Come on you two." Yusuke said.
"Awww. Do we have to?" Bijin asked pouting.
"Yes, you do. Now, go. " Yusuke said.
"Okay." The twins mumbled and left to go back to camp.
Yusuke turned to follow them when something caught his arm. He looked down to see Hiei holding his arm.
"You know who their parents are don't you, detective?" Hiei asked.
"Nani? I told you I don't know who the twins parents are. Now, do you mind letting go of my arm." Yusuke told him.
Hiei's hold on his arm tightened.
"I will find out out. Make no mistakes, detective. And if I find out that you were hiding this from me, son of Raizen be damned, I will make you suffer a fate worse than death." And with that he released Yusuke's arm and vanished.
Yusuke rubbed his arm, closed his eyes and shook his head before opening them again.
*That was too close. I'm sorry Hiei, but I promised Akari not to tell you anything. Hopefully, when we find her, the two of you can talk in private.* Yusuke said to himself before starting back up the bath to the clearing.
