CHAPTER NINE
Yusuke, Kurama, and Kuwabara were talking amongst themselves when Hiei entered the dining hall.
He closed the doors and leaned against with his head down.
"I should kill you, detective." Hiei said.
The three sitting on the couch stood up, looking at Hiei.
"Hiei, I-" Yusuke began, but was stopped when Hiei raised his hand.
"But, I won't. I'm not mad at you anymore. I apologize for hitting you." He said as he walked past them to stand in front of the painting of a white wolf with its head in the lap of a beautiful maiden sitting in a meadow with the moonlight shining down upon them.
Yusuke and the others stood rooted to floor, looking at Hiei in disbelief. He had done something they never thought he would ever do. He apologized!
"If anything, I'm angry at myself." Hiei said with his back still facing them.
"I have no right to be mad at you, detective. With everything that you told us, it has been completely my fault. I know that now."
"Hiei." Yusuke said softly.
"If I hadn't acted the way I did when Akari said she was pregnant, I would've have been a part of the twins lives long before now." Hiei said.
"Then, why did you act the way you did?" Kurama asked.
"Honestly? I was afraid. Afraid of being a father. Akari and I were happy with our relationship, but when Koenma confirmed Akari's pregnancy, I got scared." Hiei turned to face them.
"I mean look at me. I'm not exactly father material and I felt I wasn't good enough to be a father. I don't know why Akari loves me. I mean, she's beautiful, royalty, and I just don't understand why she chose me." Hiei asked himself more than the others.
"Its because you are here life mate." A familiar voice said. Everyone looked towards the door to see Dante standing there.
"Dante, what are you doing up at this hour?" Yusuke asked as Dante walked in.
"I couldn't sleep so I came to see what you guys were doing." Dante replied as he approached his father and stood before him.
"What did you mean by Hiei is Akari's life mate?" Kuwabara asked.
"Mama told us that when she was a little girl, she had a dream. And in this dream, she was visited by the Light Dragon Sora no Ten[1] and he told her that whoever wields the Ensatsu-Koku-Ryu-Ha is her life mate since she was chosen to be the wielder of the Ensatsu-Raito-Ryu-Ha[2]. She was also shown who would wield the Ensatsu-Koku-Ryu-Ha and it was you as a little boy." Dante explained to his father.
"So, you see. If the heavens find you worthy of mama, then so should you, papa. You have no idea how much mama loves you." Dante walked up to the picture that Hiei was looking at earlier.
"Mama talks about you all the time to Bijin and I. She would tell us how strong you are, how powerful you are, all the adventures you've been on and so on. But, what always held our attention was how she spoke with with such pride, joy, and love. So much love radiated from mama that we knew that if mama loved you so much, so should we, even though you weren't there." Dante turned back to his father.
"So, don't ever say that you're not good enough to be with mama or to be our father because your are the best as far as we're concerned." Dante finished with a proud smile at his father.
Hiei walked up to his son and embraced him.
"Thank you...son." He whispered in his son's ear.
"Well, I think its time we all retired. We have a big day tomorrow to come up with a plan to save Akari." Yusuke said.
"Yes, uncle Yusuke. You guys can sleep in the room across from ours. It has plenty of room and three king-sized beds. It wasn't damaged at all during the attack so don't worry about any cold drafts." Dante told them, holding his father's hand.
"Alright! Last one there sleeps on the floor!" Kuwabara said aloud as he raced out the door.
"Hey! Get back here, Kuwabara! You don't even know where the room is stupid!" Yusuke shouted as he ran out the door after him.
Kurama just chuckled and walked out the door followed by Hiei and Dante.
Hiei had just finished tucking Dante back into bed again along with his sleeping sister and was about to leave when he heard Dante's voice.
"Papa, will you sleep with us? We would sleep with mama when we were scared so, will you?" Dante asked his father.
Hiei smiled and nodded. He removed his shoes and got into the bed between Dante and Bijin. He gathered them close and closed his eyes and for the first time in his life, he felt truly complete.
"Mmm...uh." Akari moaned as she slowly opened her eyes. She slowly sat up, holding her head.
"What happened? Where am I?" She looked around to discover she was in a very nice bedroom, but whose?
"You're awake." a male voice said. Akari turned her head to the bedroom door to see a handsome young man standing there.
"Lord Kei? Is that you?" Akari asked recognizing, but not sure of his identity.
"Greetings Queen Akari. I'm glad that you are alright. Are you feeling better?" Lord Kei asked as he carried a tray of food and a glass of juice to the bed.
"Besides having headache, I'm fine. Thank you." She told him as he placed the tray before her and she began to eat.
"So? What exactly happened? The last thing I remember is trying to hold my spirit shield and after that, everything is blank." Akari asked him.
"I will explain as we go to the library." Kei told her. Akari has just finished her meal and looked at him.
"The library? Why?" She asked him as she got out of bed.
He held the door open for her.
"There is something there you need to see." He told her as she walked passed him out of the room.
As they made their way to the library, Kei explained everything, but left out the parts about Hiei and the others. Kei opened the door to the library for her and closed it as they entered the library.
"I thank you for rescuing me, Lord Kei. But, I don't understand why you didn't just take me back to my kingdom and my children? They must be very worried." She said thinking of her children and Hiei.
"Because of that?" Kei pointed to an open book lying on the mahogany table in the middle of the room.
"What is it?" Akari asked as she approached the table and looked at the book.
"What is this? The Key and Cleansing?" She asked as she began to read.
As she was reading, she failed to notice Kei coming up slowly behind her.
"The Key will bring about the Cleansing where the old world is destroyed to make way for the new. The Key must be deciphered from the ancient text on the next page."
Akari turned the page.
"This is in dad's language. The Key to the Cleansing is the first born and only child from the union of a wolf demon and a..Gasp!"
Akari falls unconscious when Kei hit her in the back of the neck with his hand, knocking her out when she saw what the text said.
"Yes, my dear. The Key is the child of a wolf demon and human female demon slayer." Kei said as he picked her up and carried her to the sofa.
Just then, there was knock on the door.
"Come in, Yuki." Kei said walking over to the bay windows.
Yuki came in with a smile on his face.
"Is everything ready?" Kei ask without turning to look at him.
"Yes sir. The last two ingredients have been gathered and the spell is ready to be cast." Yuki responded.
"Good. Take Akari and prepare her for ceremony." Kei told him.
"Yes, my lord." Yuki lifted Akari from the chair, bowed to Kei and left the library and his master alone with his thoughts.
Soon. Soon, this wretched world will end and MY world will begin. Kei said.
