There once was a girl. She was an average looking girl not pretty but not ugly. Just average. She hardly spoke but when she did it was quiet and almost whispered. She had few friends but the ones she did have were young but true to her. How she longed for someone to talk to her own age that understood her and her problems and then she met him and her life changed forever.

It was a bright and sunny day and Emily Heckman was out on her way to church early one Sunday morning. She saw the usual sites children playing, people out with their animals and shop owners setting up for the day. She lived in Nassau port and it regularly had ships coming in an out daily. She saw the occasional pirate ship but it usually left soon after it arrived because of the Nassau guards. Today was no different from the ordinary and soon she arrived at the church she attended. She said hello to everyone there, mostly adults twice her age. She was 15 ½ and was a bright girl but hardly spoke so of course the teachers thought she was stupid and disobedient. She hated that people would think something bad about her but she was too shy to speak up about it. She felt that most people didn't understand her but still she wouldn't do anything about it. She sat through the church service and paid attention carefully to the sermon so as to not seem ungodly. As she was walking home after the church service she saw a lot of her friends on the way home. They were all children but she loved them and the were always good to talk to because of how innocent they were in their thoughts but she longed for a friend her own age who she could talk to about anything. Children were great listeners and everything but they couldn't help her with young adult feelings. She returned to her home by the port soon after walking and went straight to her room. She was an orphan and lived on top of a pub because the manager took her in after finding her on the streets after the fire that had killed her parents and baby sister. How she longed for them often. Now she tried to keep up with her church activities especially at night because of how the bar was at night. It was very noisy and crowed with drunks and she didn't like to associate with them. She sang herself to sleep many a nights crying and longing for many things but never receiving them. As she looked out her window at the port and sighed loudly she saw a new ship in the harbor with black sails. "I wonder what ship that is?" she thought out loud. She knew it probably was a pirate ship and would soon be gone. She saw pirate ships all the time but this particular one caught her interest. She left her room to investigate and as she passed the manager he called out to her "where are you off to now los jóvenes uno?" "El Puerto pero a mí esté detrás pronto." She shouted back in Spanish as she ran out the door to catch the ship docking before it left.
