Which Want Us Not

Even the Valar know love and loss.

This is life's sorrow:

That one can be happy only where two are;

And that our hearts are drawn to stars

Which want us not.

--Edgar Lee Masters, "Herbert Marshall"

Before the making of the world I sang for you, and our harmony was the envy of all around us, strong and swift and lovely.

When the world was young, I sang for you. Your voice was distant, but you heard me yet, and we filled the earth with our music.

But another voice whispered to you on the winds, and your song faded. I retreated, mourning your loss, haunted by the echo of your soft voice.

Yet even now the sea and the stars dance together, and only the wind blows cold between them.

I sing for you still.
