Hunter stared down at the tombstone and the words on it, Tori Renee Bradley, beloved wife, mother, and friend. Born January First 1986-died July 18, 2026.
It had been just one week since she had been killed in a car wreck, hit head on by a drunk driver, the doctors told him she had died instantly but it still brought him no comfort. She had been his wife for twenty years.
He stared at their friends, Shane and Dustin, trying to look strong but letting their tears flow freely. His brother Blake had his head bowed. Cam had died from leukemia six years before but he would've been the strong one. Sensei made the sign of a cross.
Falling in love with her had been totally unexpected but absolutely wonderful; everyone including him thought she would wind up with his brother Blake. But Blake had focused only on his career and soon married Kelly.
Hunter remembered that night his relationship with Tori had changed, he had wiped out on his motorcycle and she helped him up. In the sunlight she appeared to glow like an angel, he leaned over and quickly kissed her. Tori smiled and embraced him.
They got married six months later and a year after that Vanessa their daughter was born, three years later they had twins, David and Brenda. Soon Marah and Dustin got married, then Kapri and Shane, finally came married Leeann Amano. All of them had remained close.
They had gathered to mourn came helping each other to remain strong, now they tried to remain strong with Tori's passing. Hunter felt a hand on his shoulder, it was Blake.
"God bro I'm sorry."
Hunter nodded and returned the embrace, then saw his three children coming to him. God Tori, he thought, they're so much like you. He remembered his wife's final words, be back soon.
Why did you leave me Tori? I was supposed to go first; I don't want to live without you.
"Dad?" Vanessa spoke softly, "Its time to go."
"No leave me alone."
She forced him to look into her eyes, eyes so much like Tori's. "We just lost mom don't make us lose you too."
Hunter embraced all three of them, "I...I."
Vanessa tried to smile, "Mom would want us to go on."
Hunter knew she was right but it was still to hard to think about.
THE END
