The Birthday Surprise

"Duncan what have I told you about putting the butter knife in the jam?" Jess scolded Duncan as he put the knife into the jam.
"Jess" Duncan grinned as she gently but firmly slapped the back of his hand.
"So..what are you doing today" Jess inquired as she munched through her toast, " You do know what special day it is today don't ya?"
"Well I'm going to feed the pheasants then I'm gonna go and check the deer" Duncan smiled as he checked them off with his fingers,
"And..?" Jess smiled
"Oh yep, almost forgot, I'm going fishing with Golly," Duncan looked at Jess while eating his toast, "What?" Duncan could see Jess was angry, "What have I done know?"
"I can't believe you haven't remembered" Jess stood up and walked out of the room into the hall, Duncan followed looking very bewildered.
Just then Molly came down stairs, her eyes lit up and she smiled when she saw Jess.
"Jess!" Molly gave her a big warm hug, "Happy Birthday" Molly smiled again as she presented Jess with a watercolor painting of the loch.
Duncan felt as if he had been turned upside down on a roller coaster, his stomach did a flip as he remembered with guilt.
How could he forget Jess's Birthday…..
