As much as Bella and Edward love each other, they can't possibly understand what the other's life is like.
On Bella's 18th birthday, instead of a paper cut, a switch is about to make Forks even weirder.
How will Bella cope with suddenly being a 104-year-old mind-reading vampire in love with her singer? And how will Edward cope with being a human in love with a vampire?

Chapter 92

"Do you really think I'll just stand by and allow her to fight you on her own?" Edward asked her hypothetically, but barely before he'd gotten the whole question out, they both heard the approach of a second set of feet.

"No, you don't have to worry about that," Victoria said with an almost pleasant smile as a blond boy came out of the shadows behind her. "You'll be sufficiently distracted by my friend."

Bella immediately identified him as someone who hadn't passed his one-year-mark either from how jittery he acted compared to Edward and Victoria. She understood him since she could feel the same edge throughout her own newly transformed muscles.

"Yes, that's all you are to her, Riley. A friend. If even that," Edward answered a thought, and Bella realized that Victoria had spun lies in order to recruit the boy—Riley—which didn't surprise her. Even though Bella didn't know what kind of person Victoria truly was, she'd always struck her as manipulative.

Victoria rolled her eyes before Riley even got the chance to feel uncertain. "Don't listen to him, Riley. He's the mind-reader I told you about. He's a master at mind games."

A fleeting thought had Bella wondering how many Victoria had brought with her since not one of the Denalis had come to their aid, but then she felt Edward's hand squeeze hers, and she forced her attention back to the situation at hand.

Edward was trying to tell her something, but they hadn't had enough time together as vampires to learn to communicate silently like Alice and Jasper did with each other.

For a moment, Bella was furious that Edward couldn't read her mind since it would have been the perfect way to let him know she would do everything she could to make sure they both got out of their alive.

He squeezed her hand again, and a jolt of curiosity shot through Bella. Was he able to read her thoughts after all?

Edward, can you hear me? she asked, and he immediately responded with another squeeze. She had a thousand questions of how and why, but she was astutely aware that now wasn't the time.

Not once had she taken her eyes off Victoria while she and Edward had their silent conversation, and Bella saw the exact moment she decided there had been enough chatting.

Bella mapped out the entire hallway they were in. They were cornered and she tried to figure out the best way they could get their attackers off them just long enough for them to run out of the house and gain the advantage of space. Before she could hesitate, she made the decision.

Edward, flip me around and I'll kick them off. Then we'll make a run for it outside!

He confirmed the plan by giving her another squeeze, and then they prepared for the inevitable impact.

Whoa, Edward can read Bella's thoughts!

What are your theories as to why? Since it's clearly done subconsciously and not her forcing her shield from her mind. The subject of her shield hasn't even been brought up yet :P

So tell me, why do you think Edward could suddenly hear them?
