Hey I'm so happy that people reviewed and liked this story! Thanks a bunch for the positive stuff!
Someone asked whether this story was current to the series or not, and no it isn't. Sadly becuase of basketball this last year, I've only seen about two episodes of season ten, and I need to hurry and find a good episode guide so I can be ready for the new season (I have a way of getting it now : ) ) This story was from watching the season 7 reruns that played on TNT in the last month and the idea just popped into my head and wouldn't let me go until I wrote it.
I apologize now for the crappy ending-- don't ask; I always butcher them.
The bullet was so close that Abby could feel the heat as it went by her and into the man's right shoulder. He cried out and let go of her and the knife in favor of falling to the sudden hot and blinding pain of a gunshot. She fell forward clutching her throat and coughing from trying to breath at a faster rate. Her knees hit the floor hard and she nearly face planted if not for the arms that caught her before she hit the tiles.
The touch told her it was Luka, even if her eyes were screwed shut so she couldn't see him. Her lungs were still rebelling and she really didn't like it when her hand was brushed away so the doctor could check her neck for injury. Then, arms were around her again and she was being picked up. Numbly she put her arms around Luka's neck and hung on tight as he carried her to a different room. She didn't have to open her eyes to know that she had just become the hospital's latest sideshow attraction.
Luka watched as the shot caused the man to let go of Abby completely, causing both of them to crumble to the floor. He pushed the cop out of his way and just barely caught Abby her before she fell onto the floor completely. She was coughing and trying to take in air rapidly, her hands clasped around her throat as if she was choking. He brushed one away and looked carefully at where the knife had been for injuries.
Deciding that he needed to move her to check on her fully, he wrapped an arm around her back and her knees and picked her up. She seemed to know who he was even though she hadn't opened her eyes since the shot was fired and hugged his shoulders tightly.
The crowd outside parted immediately and he wished for a moment that Kerry would appear just to order them back to work. He headed for an empty trauma room and carefully set Abby down on the gurney there. A couple of nurses followed him and he began listings tests he wanted done to be sure that she wasn't hurt in the vocal cords or with breathing. "Abby, can you speak?"
She opened her eyes and saw him looming before her. She took a coughing breath and croaked through a very sore throat, "Define speak." He smiled slightly and began feeling along her windpipe for unseen anomalies. She winced as he hit a sensitive spot, and he added an x-ray to his orders. Over the next few minutes he assessed her and put her on and oxygen mask until she could breathe better on her own.
He glanced up to see Kerry in trauma one working on the man who had taken Abby hostage. Beside the bed a police officer was searching for additional weapons while trying to stay out of the cranky redhead's way. Once he was satisfied, he handcuffed the uninjured arm to the gurney. Kerry looked up to him and he could tell from her expression that the man would be just fine, especially considering no one was moving at a particularly rushed pace.
Luka glared at the now sedated man and then refocused his attention on the one in front of him.
Several hours of tests and police testaments later, Luka was pulling up his car to the ambulance bay and then running in to wheel Abby out, much to her annoyance. She had come away with a bruised trachea and a sore throat, nothing permanent, but Luka was treating her like she had had major surgery. When they had gotten to Abby's apartment, he had almost insisted on carrying her up the stairs. Just to get him to stop she had tired to yell at him but it all came out in a croak and a few scratches that conveyed no actual English.
Once they got up to the apartment, he had all but ordered her to go lay down and rest, and she didn't feel like arguing. So there she was, lying in bed with nothing to do at nearly seven at night. Beside her lied a pack of lozenges from the last time she was sick that she enjoyed numbing her throat with. Abby could hear Luka in the kitchen, probably making a late dinner. She closed her eyes and let the sounds lull her to sleep.
"Abby? Abby, wake up." A gentle hand was shaking her and she begrudgingly opened her eyes. Luka smiled at her and pushed some hair off of her face, "I made soup. Are you hungry?"
She wasn't really, but she decided she had better eat anyway. Luka was in the protective doctor mode and the only way to settle him down was to follow his wishes and instructions to at least make him think that you were feeling better. He put his arm around her and guided them to the living room where he had bowls of soup waiting beside the couch.

Luka watched her eat and could tell immediately that she wasn't hungry. She couldn't have taken more than three sips of the hot liquid. After about ten minutes he took their bowls into the kitchen and emptied them into the sink. When he returned Abby was lying down on the couch. He sat on the edge by her stomach and took her hand in his. "Abby, are you alright?"
"I'm fine Luka."
That was a lie and they both knew it. He had seen how scared she had been and knew that she was just trying to be brave. "Abby, you were almost killed today. I won't just leave and let you build another wall around yourself. I want to be there for you and know what you are feeling." He bent down and kissed her forehead. When he pulled back Abby had a tear rolling down her cheek. He brushed it away and brought her into a comforting hug.
After a while he lifted her up and carried her into the bedroom. They both took a few minutes to change into their bedclothes and then crawled under the covers. Luka took her into his arms again and rested their foreheads together.
"Luka?"
"Yeah?"
Abby raised her eyes to his and bit her lip.
"Abby, I know."
She smiled slightly at him; understanding what he knew she was going to say. "Let's sleep in tomorrow."
She took his quick kiss to her lips to mean yes.

"Suteki Da Ne; Isn't it Wonderful?" By: Rikki
The first two songs can be fully read and translated on
The last song is from the PlayStation 2 game Final Fantasy X and can be found on the soundtrack or on a Final Fantasy lyrics website.
I would recommend downloading all three songs or buying the cd's with them; they are all really good. If anyone wants the full lyrics from any three I'd be happy to email them to you. Just drop me a line.
