Pictures in the Sky

He had been sitting outside the temple, watching as the moon sank behind the hills. Comfortable against the wall, Sanzo pondered his life.

Today had been the 17th anniversary of the day Koumyou Sanzo had found him in the river. If Sanzo had really cared, he would have counted this day as his birthday, but he never really bothered to really care. Not really.

Then had come that day, four years ago. He had followed that damn annoying voice and picked up a loud chibisaru. He hadn't really wanted to, but there was something in that blank look that wouldn't let him leave the child behind the bars.

Now Goku had become a permanent part of his life. That was really something Sanzo hadn't expected. He had planned on dumping the kid off at the temple, then continuing his search. And he did, sort of. The monk had found himself returning to the temple far more often than before, bringing home little presents to give Goku.

It was Goku who had started the annual birthday celebration. He had pestered the monks enough that they had given him the day, and he had taken over from there. Sanzo had been speechless the first time he had come home and found his rooms decorated in horribly tacky streamers and badly wrapped presents.

Sanzo had been touched. Not that he would ever admit it.

"What are you doing?"

"Nothing."

If it had been anyone besides Goku, at any other time, Sanzo would have pulled his gun. But he could tell when Goku was nearby, just as Goku could always track down Sanzo. They were connected, somehow.

When Goku continued to stare at him, Sanzo shot him an irritated glance. "What the hell do you want, Bakasaru?"

"Not a bakasaru," spat the thirteen-year old, who then sat next to Sanzo. "I was just wondering what you were doing."

Seeing that he wasn't going to get rid of the child, Sanzo gave up. "I'm looking at the constellations."

Golden eyes shined in the starlight. "The what?"

"Constellations," Sanzo repeated. "Pictures formed of stars."

Goku frowned, a puzzled look on his face. Sanzo was suddenly reminded of how young the demon seemed. While he looked physically around twelve or thirteen, and had actually been trapped in the cave for gods know how long, Goku was very young mentally, sometimes.

Sighing to himself, Sanzo reached out and pulled Goku closer to him. Letting his head rest against Goku's, Sanzo began to point out the pictures in the sky.
