Impulse

He did not know how this came about.

Having her in his arms, her face and body pressed to his.

She had struggled for a moment when he began. Now she struggled no more. Her hands, still soft and white despite the calluses and bruises that marred her palms, clutched his shoulders with trembling fingers, neither pulling him closer or pushing him away.

Her mouth tasted like the springwater he knew she drank every morning on the way to the glade where she trained, alone, hours before sunrise. Where he had followed her ever since he could, taking care -- of course -- not to be seen.

He ended the kiss and opened his eyes. Hers had remained open, pale, near-white orbs gazing up at him quietly, almost accusingly. Searching his own for answers.

They found none. How could they, when he himself didn't know why he did what he did?

Her eyes released him from her gaze. Her face was a mixture of betrayal and confusion. "Neji-nii-san..." she began, and then said nothing.

It didn't matter.

He was gone before she uttered the first syllable of his name.

She touched her fingers to her lips. In a few more minutes, the sun would have fully risen. Sighing softly, she went back to her training.
