A/n: This is the book universe. Sorry for the not-at-it's-best writing. Romance is my forte. This was written for Marigold's Challenge 7.

The Friendship of Hobbits.

Peregrin 'Pippin' Took, guard of the Citadel and knight of Gondor, sat in his room in the Fields of Cormallen. He'd only just woken up from being nearly crushed by bodies at the Black Gate. He was just a tad sore.
Having just woken up, no one was telling him anything! That frustrated him just a little. But what he really wanted, even above finding out what happened, was that he wanted to see his friends. Were Sam and Frodo even alive? Is Merry here? How is he?
"Pip? How are you feeling?" Pippin's head snapped towards the familiar voice, his eyes spotting a curly head poking from around the corner.
"MERRY!" The younger hobbit cried happily, "I was just wondering how you were. I'm not the infamous hobbit who stabbed the Witch King!"
Merry just laughed and came inside, finally stopping next to the bed. "I'm fine. I've been so for a while. Just wondering when you'd wake up, shorty!" In a fit of more laughter (Something always present when these two were together), Merry pulled Pip into what seemed to be a brotherly hug, until Merry's fist came down on Pip's own curly head in a noogie!
"Ow! Merry! Hey, come on! Stop that!" Pip slipped his head out of the arm wrap that had taken over his neck and suddenly turned serious, "Did we win? Are Frodo and Sam alive?"
"Hey, hey, hey. My question first. How are you feeling?" Merry sat on the bed next to his cousin.
"I'm fine! Just a little sore. Now, my questions!" Pippin sighed exasperatedly. He was sick of people always asking him that.
"Yes, of course we won. Would either of us be here if we didn't? Besides, they had us, Frodo, and Sam. What more could they need?" Both hobbits laughed before Merry continued, a bit more serious, "As for those two, they haven't woken up yet. They are alive, for certain! But for how long is not quite certain, if they don't wake up soon." The sudden truly somber mood in the room seemed out of place, what with the two liveliest hobbits from the Shire there.

"Merry? You don't happen to have any food with you? I'm famished!" Pip grinned, bringing an immediate lightening-of-mood to both hobbits. There was also a lightening of mood brought to a white wizard and a king across the hall, as well as to an elf and a dwarf in the hall. Frodo and Sam smiled in their sleep. Boromir laughed from across a distant shore. The fellowship was laughing. All because of the Merry-and-Pippin-ment of two young hobbits.
