Dancing in the Fast Lane

Katou's POV, pre-series/alternate universe.

This is the part I'll never get used to. That half-second right before the needle pierces the skin and I break out in that cold sweat. It occurs to me that these few breaths could be my last, but it's too late to turn back because I'm already pushing down on the syringe. Inject...

And then let go.

I woke up the next day, or maybe it was the same day, the needle still stuck in my vein. I was still in the corner of Youji's place, except that no one else was in the room. The needle came out silently and I let it fall to the floor and got to my feet. My head was swimming and my joints were sore, but that's nothing new to a junkie like me.

All I needed was a pick-me-up.

My fingers moved on their own accord, I laid the mirror on the floorboard and pulled out a small clear bag half-filled with white powder. Blow. Coke. Whatever you want to call it.

I wasn't surprised to see that my fingers were shaking.

I had a card in my back pocket, a plastic game card I saved from last week when Kira and I went to the arcade.

I crushed and rocks that were left and made a nice line for myself.

My nose was numb for about 30 seconds and then my mind was clear.

I let myself out, Youji would be back later, he'd clean up.

Author's Note: I don't own Angel Sanctuary/Katou, Kaori Yuki does.
