Ch17: curiosity killed the cat

"HE WHAAAT!?!?" Nat squealed. "You- bu- wha!" She was lost for words.

"Hey hey! Keep your voice down! We don't want Teal'c coming in thinking you're having another night terror!" Sam ushered.

"Colonel O'Neill kissed you last week?" Janet repeated. Sam nodded. "Well why didn't you tell us before!" Janet squealed, grabbing Sam's shoulders.

knock knock

Nat got up to answer the door. "Hey Teal'c. What's up?"

"I apologise for interupting, but the noise is interrupting my kelnoreem," Teal'c explained. He stuck his head in the doorway and said hello to Sam and Janet.

"Sorry Teal'c. We'll try be more quiet," Nat apologised and closed the door.

ring ring

"What the hell is going on today!?" Nat said out loud as she walked to the phone.

"Ten bucks says it's Daniel upstairs," Janet said to Sam.

"You're on," Sam replied, shaking hands with Janet.

"Hello?"

"Nat, it's Daniel. Unless you three are watching an insanely scary horror movie, which requires screaming, could you please lower the decibells a little?"

Nat pointed to Janet, letting her no she won the bet and Janet let out a little 'whoohoo!'

"Sorry Dan. We're just gossiping. How are you anyway?"

"Not bad. What are you doing tonight?" Dan asked.

"Nothing. Why?"

"Wanna come over tonight?"

"You WHAT!?" Dan screamed.

"Whoah! Danny! Easy on the ears!" Jack screamed back.

"Wow! We never really picked up on that. I mean, Teal'c told me you went above ground to talk to Sam, but we didn't think you would have made a move on her! You two have been acting somewhat normal all week!" Dan replied.

"I too did not see anything different between you and Major Carter since returning from the engagement party," Teal'c explained.

"Yeah well, I sorta told her BEFORE the.. move.. that we'll act like none of that conversation ever happened," Jack explained.

"You said it BEFORE the kiss?" Daniel repeated. "Don't you think that maybe Sam needs to talk about what happened AFTER your move?"

"No, I don't think she wants to talk about it. She's still engaged to Marty. Doesn't anyone else think it's a weird marriage?" Jack asked.

Just then Sam and Nat walked into the mess hall and sat with the guys.

"Hey guys! Ready for our mission today?" Nat asked as she sat next to Daniel. Sam sat next to Teal'c.

"Yep! Last mission before we go skeleton crew for three months!" Jack smiled.

"Yeah.. We don't really do that in my time. What is it again?" Nat asked, taking a few of Daniel's fries.

"Hey!" Dan complained. Nat just smiled shoved the fries in her mouth and let out a quiet 'mmm' to piss Daniel off.

"Well, since we don't have a DHD, we need to re-callibrate the stargate and update our systems. We're pretty much doing a major tune up of the stargate system. During this time there's going to be minimal staff on and we don't run any missions unless we need to. It could take as long as 1 to 3 months. You're only going to be needed at the base once or twice a week until the tune up is completed," Sam explained.

"Once or twice a week? SWEET! Simpsons marathon, here I come!" Jack rubbed his hands together and smiled.

"Sam, didn't you tell me you're going to be here everyday to supervise the recalibration?" Daniel asked. Sam nodded.

[One month later: April 29th]

"Hey Sam! How's the overhaul going?" Nat asked as she handed Sam a coffee.

"Oh hey Nat. It's going quicker than I thought. Hopefully we should be done in a month instead of 2." Sam explained, continuing to type on her laptop.

"Hey, didn't you tell me that Marty was coming to visit today?" Nat asked, looking at her watch.

"Shoot! What time is it!"

"Ten am."

"Shit! He's gonna be here in an hour!" Sam squealed, attempting to fix her hair.

"Don't worry. Take him outside the base. Go for lunch! You're due for a day off arent you?"

"Good morning campers!" Jack announced as he entered Dan's study. Teal'c and Nat took their noses out of the books they were reading and Dan turned from the bookshelf to face Jack. "What's going on?"

"That dig on P3X-486 that Dan had been working on, sg-7 found a few artifacts, but they need translating," Nat explained.

"So why are you guys here?" Jack asked, looking at Teal'c and Nat.

"There is presently nothing for us to do while the stargate is being temporarily shutdown," Teal'c explained, returning to his book.

"Okay, I guess you're right. Pass me a book," O'Neill huffed, sitting down next to Teal'c. "Where's Carter?"

Teal'c. Dan and Nat all looked at eachother like they didn't want to tell Jack. "What?" Jack asked.

"Dan, do you wanna take this one?" Nat asked Dan.

Daniel raised his eyebrow. "Me?"

"What is going on!?" Jack asked a bit louder. "Daniel?"

"Well, Sam's taking Martouf for a drive around Colorado Springs," Dan explained, waiting for Jack's reaction.

"Marty came to visit? That's nice," Jack commented then went to reading whatever book was in front of him. The others weren't sure how Jack was going to react. When they saw him begin to read, they shrugged at each other and returned to reading.

"Exactly what am I meant to be looking for in this book?" Jack asked, having no idea what Daniel needed to translate.

"Your world is amazing Sam," Martouf commented as he watched a bird fly by.

Sam smiled and held Martouf hand. "This is just the park. Wait til you see the city, amusement parks.."

"Sam. I want to tell you something," Marty began. Sam began to worry and held his hand tighter without even knowing it.

"Don't worry. It's nothing bad," Marty smiled, realising that Sam was squeezing his hand. "I've spoken with the council and your father. I also talked to General Hammond. After we get married, I'm to remain here on Earth, working at the SGC," Martouf explained.

Sam was surprised. "You're kidding! You've already organised it?" Sam didn't know what to say.

"Is that bad?"

"No! It's amazing! I can't believe it!" She squaeled and practically jumped on him. Martouf lifted up Sam and spun her around before kissing her.

Nat sat in the mess hall, eating her sandwhich while she read future Daniel's enormous journal.

[April 20, 2024: Nat told me today that she can't wait to meet Jack, Sam and Teal'c. Since I've been tutoring her she's been improving at school. I've been trying my hardest to make her good enough to get into the SGC College. I've also been telling her stories about my old Sg-1 days, but it drives me crazy that I cant tell her all the amazing stories about when she was there with us. Yesterday I went over to Jack and Sam's house and told them that I've been dying to tell Nat about everything. It's heartbreaking to see someone you loved not remember you. Sam and Jack are having a mini wedding annaversary in a month, and I told them I'd invite Nat..]

"Just a little bit of light reading?"

Nat looked up from the journal to see Jack sitting across from her at the table. "Oh hey Colonel. Yeah, I haven't read this journal in a while, so I thought since Professor Daniel gave it to me, I might aswell read it," She explained.

"Anything interesting?" Jack asked, trying to take a peek at the book.

"Well, yeah actually. I know Teal'c said you shouldn't read it, but this page doesn't give away anything more than you already know, so here." She turned the journal around so Jack could read and she pointed to the paragraph she was reading.

"You know, I think I'm more surprised that you can actually read Daniel's writing than anything," Jack said as he began to read. "Okay, I finished reading it. How's that interesting? Of course we'd be happy to see ya!" Jack explained.

"That's good to hear. Nah, Dan worte that he was gona invite me to your annaversary party. I remember that day. Looking back, I know now why you guys were all acting funny around me, but back then, I had no idea why Sam came back from the kitchen looking like she was crying or why when you opened the front door, and Dan introduced us you said that we'd already met," Nat explained.

"Hmm.. that is intersting. So what do I look like as an elderly man?" Jack asked, trying to subtly flick through more pages of the journal, seeing photos of pyramids, sketches of people Jack knew as friends. "Seems like Dan starts to stick photos into his journals in the future. Is there one of us as old geezers?"

Nat took the book off him. "Teal'c said you guys shouldn't read this." Jack let out a huff because he didn't get any more info. "But one funny thing Dan wrote in here is that you start going bald and complained. But Teal'c said that being bald isnt so bad," Nat explained. Jack laughed.

"Yeah that sounds like Teal'c alright."

Dan walked into the messhall, followed by Teal'c. "Hey, my journal!" Dan tried to take it off Nat as he sat next to her. Nat pulled it away from Dan and held it to her chest. "Hey! I thought you guys agreed not to read it!" She complained. Teal'c grabbed some jello and sat next to jack.

"Indeed. Natalie is right. On Chulack, it is seen as bad luck to know one's future," Teal'c explained.

"But come on Teal'c! You can't tell me you're not curious," Dan asked.

"Indeed I have been curious from time to time, but I maintain self control when Natalie has the journal near me," Teal'c explained.

"You've been reading this around Teal'c?" Jack asked Nat, slightly frustrated that she wont let him read it.

"Yeah, well. Like Teal'c said, he doesn't try and grab it when I'm around!" Nat complained. "And besides, Dr Frasier said I should try meditating with Teal'c to help with my nightmares. I know that Teal'c wouldn't try swipe the journal while I was meditating!" Nat eyed Daniel and Jack suspiciously.

"So you leave the book with Teal'c eh?" Jack repeated as he rubbed his chin, as if he was brainstorming something evil.

"Don't even think about swiping the book. I'm not going to bring it with me to the SGC anymore,"Nat explained as she continued to hug the journal. "Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to hide the book somewhere before you guys try take it off me," Nat explained.

As she left the messhall, Jack whispered to Teal'c, "So you've never had a quick look at the journal while she was meditating?" He asked slyly. Daniel leaned in also interested at the answer.

"One day, Nat fell into such a deep meditation, that she fell asleep. At that moment I took it upon myself to read a few pages of the journal."

"You sly dog you!" Jack slapped Teal'c on the back. "What did you read?" Teal'c didn't reply. He continued to eat his jello.

"Teal'c come on!" Dan pushed. "What did you read?"

"I read of my son's wedding. It will be a joyous day. I also read of Major Carter and Martouf," Teal'c explained before returning to his jello.

"T man! Give us some details!" Jack complained.

"I do not wish to reveal any details as of yet. There are some things I believe we should not know about our futures," the Jaffa explained. "Loosely translated, the curiosity of the cat was what killed it."

"Here, we say 'curiosity killed the cat," Dan corrected Teal'c.

"So you get to read about your son's future but you wont give us any details?" Jack interrupted.

Teal'c nodded and returned to his jello. "I will not tell anymore about Daniel Jackson's journal."

"So we might as well give up while we're behind?" Dan replied. Teal'c nodded with a slight smile on his face.

------author's notes: okay I KNOW the story is heading more into Sam/Jack pairing, but I've been trying to include the other characters... Nat's in the story 4 a reason.. all will be revealed soon.. ------
