This poured out of me within what, ten minutes? I love love love to write Hawkeye. I still have great problems with writing plot!fics, apparently. But I like this general idea, because I would personally wonder the same thing as Hawkeye.

Hawkeye feels a little silly as she invites the Elric brothers for tea. Their relationship might be a bit warmer than pure working partnership, and she sometimes likes to think that they have warmed up to her a little since they first met. But they aren't close, or the type to admit that they are.
It had been a long day, though, and she knows that the teenagers are going to be alone in their dorm room tonight. Something inside her stomach kicks as the thought passes her mind, perhaps a shadow, an illusion, of motherly care for two young boys. Maybe it's the thought of loneliness itself that makes her wince. Despite often preferring to be alone, Hawkeye has never liked feeling lonely.
Black Hayate comes padding to greet them when she opens the door; Edward scratches the dog, with some experience, behind the right ear. A fragment of a memory startles her, a dog barking in a garden and an old woman coming out to scold. The colonel had barged inside the house, back then, and they had found the Elric brothers too late. Hawkeye doesn't fail to notice that Edward is using his left arm to handle the dog. Alphonse pats Hayate, too, chuckling delightedly. A true lover of animals, that one.
Taking her own and Edward's wet coats, she tells them to sit in the living room until the tea is done.
She wonders, as she steps into the kitchen, if she should get beverage for both Edward and Alphonse. Her logical state of mind tells her just to Edward, because it would be a waste of perfectly fine tea to give it to someone who can't drink it. But her good manners, and perhaps a little bit of heart, says otherwise.
Hawkeye ends up filling the unnecessary cup with the steaming liquid, and brings them out to her guests. They're seated side by side on the couch, and she realizes that perhaps she should have offered Alphonse a towel in the hall. He doesn't wear clothes, so there was nothing to protect his metal body from the rain. Water is soaking the cushions. But she could deal with a wet couch, she supposes. She's been through worse.
Both brothers look startled as Hawkeye places the third cup in front of Alphonse. The youngest sibling sputters and manages an embarrassed apology; he can't drink it, after all, sorry for the trouble, thank you so much anyway. But Hawkeye doesn't miss the secretly pleased smile spreading on the big brother's face. Apparently, the way to Edward's heart is through his brother.
She allows herself to smile back.

Um, why do I use Hawkeye's last name all the time? ;P
