Water. That thought played in my mind over and over again. I need water...so thirsty...I imagined the relief of the cold water sliding over my tongue, down my throat...I shook my head. No. I mustn't think of water...it'll just make me thirstier.
It seemed like I had been walking for days. Fate had called this task upon me, it seems. That is why I was chosen, and not the tough Raphael or the perfect Leonardo. Or even the genius Donatello. No, it was I who had to do this task. Who else would be able to do it exactly right?
I forced my feet to keep moving. The longer I took, the harsher price I had to pay. My eyes drooped behind my orange bandanna. I was exausted. How long had I been walking, anyway?
My stomach rumbled, not for the first time today. So hungry...it seemed like I hadn't eaten in ages either. My thoughts focused on water once again. I looked to the sky hopefully, looking for a raincloud, or some sign of precipitation. None.
As I forced my feet to drag themselves forward, one in front of the other, I became aware of the precious package in my hands. Lose this, and there was nothing to live for. It had to be the most important package in the world, or at least in New York.
My dragging feet hit a crack, and I toppled over, losing my grip on the package. "Noo..." I moaned. I lay on the ground for a few moments, resting. I sat up and looked around for the package. It was safely nestled right next to me. My joy from finding that the package had suffered no harm did not ease the fatigue, thirst and hunger. How much further did I have to go?
Then I saw the manhole. I could have leapt for joy, but I was too tired. I jumped down the entrance to the sewers, and walked a bit faster to the metal door of my home. Home. I was finally here. After all that.
I reached out to pull the door open, but it swung open of it's own accord. My brother Raphael was standing there. He had pulled the door open. He had a look of annoyance on his face. "Jeez Mikey, how long does it take to walk four blocks and back to pick up a pizza?"
THE END
