Izar unleashes the wrath of God.
Despite how tense things were, a sense of hope had spread through the streets of Chiba. While Izar's Life Points were still far higher than Yumi's his field was empty and his hand contained nothing of value. Even those with limited knowledge of the game could tell he'd lost his advantage. While it was still too early to call, the matter might as well have been settled.
In the void, Yumi finally asked the question everyone on the ground had ignored through their premature celebration: "What do you mean by 'god'?"
Izar laughed again, shaking his head. "A god, Takano Yumi. You're looking at one."
She couldn't help but roll her eyes. He was going full anime villain now, that much was sure. "If you won't give me a clear answer, you might as well just continue your turn."
"Eager to die now, I see," he shot back. "Fine, I'll go on and Set a card. Then, I'll activate Treasure Cards from the Heavens, letting us both draw until we have six cards."
This was troublesome. Regardless of the fact they both got a fairly even amount of cards out of this (Izar six, Yumi five), she'd have problems using any of them until the next turn. That was always the rub with that card; plenty of advantage for both players in theory, but it always favored the turn player.
Taking one of his new cards, Izar tossed it forward. "I activate MACRO Catastrophe," he declared, the image of a world collapsing into flames appearing before him. "If you're the only one with cards in the Pendulum Zones, I destroy them and draw a new card."
That hardly seemed fair. Yumi shielded herself as both Scaredy Lion and Butter Fly were burned to cinders, taking out one layer of her defense. Resetting the Scales would be hard this late in the game, too.
Revealing two more cards, Izar continued, "Now, I set the Pendulum Scales with Macrocosmus – PAIN and Macrocosmus – PENANCE." Looks like he was going for more mass Summons. What would it be now? More Xyz? Synchro? Maybe that Fusion he alluded to earlier with that strange retrieval?
"Pendulum Summon!" he declared, bringing out copies of PENANCE, JUDGMENT, and SORROW. "And now, I activate the Field Magic, Mound of the Bound God!" Izar raised his hand to the sky, a bolt of golden lightning striking down into it. As this happened, a series of stone columns rose up from the shadows, massive chains hanging ominously from all of them.
"Bound God?" Yumi questioned, still unsure about what all of this god talk was supposed to mean.
"This card's still a little hard to control, even for me." Izar scoffed. "And I'm sure you know that, by admitting this to you, I'm planning to kill you now." Of course he was.
Yumi steeled herself, ready to face whatever monstrosity might be about to jump out at her. He had Tuners, so maybe it was a Synchro Monster. But that card had something to do with Level 10 and above, so he must be going for a Level 12. There were two Tuners, so maybe he was going to use both at once? No, that was silly. Nothing like that existed. So what was it?
Blasting all her predictions out of the water, Izar raised a hand towards his monsters. "I release all three of my cards," he said, the trio of horrors glowing gold before flying upwards towards what almost seemed to be storm clouds in the void.
"Wait, three monsters?" Yumi had been so confused by the choice for an Advance Summon that it took her a moment to realize just how many cards he'd used for it.
"Indeed!" he called back. "Now gaze in horror and reverence as I call down...God! Advance Summon!"
Those had been clouds, and now they'd parted. The entirety of the void was now a blinding white, almost as if the sun itself had been pulled into Izar's darkness. Yumi couldn't even stand to look directly at whatever was materializing. It was just too bright.
"Descend, Winged God Dragon of Ra!" The light grew dimmer, though it was still blinding. To call this creature a sun wasn't much of an exaggeration given its completely spherical form. That seemed set to change, though, as the chains from the Field hooked onto the metallic plates that made up its body.
The ear-splitting grind of metal-on-metal shrieked through the void, Yumi covering her ears as she strained through half-closed eyes to see what was happening. From her very compromised perspective, it looked like Izar was pulling his monster apart, trying to force it to conform to his will.
"God didn't want to cooperate with me because I don't care to know one of your primitive languages," Izar said, having no problem observing his card's appearance. "So I made sure to take this Field Card, too, just in case something like this would happen."
Eventually, the chains forced the creature out of its sphere mode, Ra now standing as a golden bird. Eyes glinting with red-hot fury, it let out a pained shriek. Despite its best efforts, though, it had been tamed.
"Much better," Izar crooned. "Now, as I was saying, it's time for you to face the wrath of God."
The light had died down, Ra still glowing a bright gold, but now visible to someone like Yumi. It towered over anything on the field – no, anything she'd ever played against before. Beyond that, the aura this thing exuded was unlike any card she'd ever encountered. This was no monster; it really was a god.
"Ra's ATK and DEF are both decided by the ATK and DEF of the monsters used to Summon it," Izar explained, the god sporting an even 3000 for both values now. Respectable, but not enough to beat over either of Yumi's cards.
As if sensing this doubt, Izar opened his arms, shouting, "Now, we become one!" In an instant, his body exploded right where it stood. What at first seemed like the most dramatic way possible to surrender a duel quickly revealed itself to be another of Ra's effects, the card's ATK rising even higher.
"With this effect, I can give up all but 1 of my Life Points," Izar explained, now revealing himself fused to the top of Ra's head. The god cried out in pain, trying to shake free of his poisonous influence but only succeeding in binding itself tighter in the chains.
As Ra's power grew to 6899, Yumi realized her foolishness in accepting the conditions Izar set at the start of the duel. 8000 Life Points. It was all for this. No matter how much she damaged him, he'd still end up with far more than normal if they started with that much. It was a trick from the start.
"Now, I'm moving to the Battle Phase," Izar declared, smiling widely. "And I should warn you that anything you try won't work. Ra can't be stopped by any of your cards unless they target it, but Mound of the Bound God prevents effects that target my god. Your effects are useless and your monsters are too weak to matter. I've constructed an unstoppable formation, and there's nothing you can do to survive it. Ra, attack! God Blaze Cannon!"
As he laughed in a self-congratulatory fervor, Yumi just scoffed. "Unstoppable?" she said. "It's tough, but not that. Trap activate, Iron Resolve!" She braced herself, struggling through her Life Points halving to nearly nothing. Taking a second to catch her breath, she explained, "With this, I negate any battle damage I take this turn, plus I end the Battle Phase."
Izar's laughter stopped abruptly, realizing he was already in Main Phase 2 as Ra contained the fire that brewed inside itself. "How's that?" Yumi said, confidence refusing to waver any longer. "If I can't stop that card directly, I'll just stop the Battle Phase!"
Narrowing his eyes, Izar Set a card in a huff. "I guess that's to be expected," he said, clearly perturbed by his perfect plan turning out to be a dud. "Fine, you'll get one more turn to struggle. Make the most of it."
"Draw!" Yumi said, adding a seventh card to her hand. With that, she was now able to take full advantage of the Treasure Cards, Izar's overconfidence once again coming back to bite him.
"Trap activate!" Izar declared, "MACRO Force!" The card appeared beside Ra, showing a human that appeared an awful lot like Yumi herself being bound up in chains. "With this, no one can play cards in Defense Mode. On top of that, if a player doesn't attack during their turn, they'll take 2000 damage."
His smug smile said it all. He was now forcing her to do battle with the god card. Looks like turtling through it wouldn't even be on the table now.
It didn't matter, though. She didn't need to wait for help to arrive, her newest card being just that. "Ritual Magic, Common Ritual!" As soon as the card appeared, Yumi was already playing another. "Chain, Instant Magic, Emergency Provisions!"
"Clever," Izar admitted. "You'll get rid of the Ritual to boost your Life Points, then resolve its effect."
"That's right," Yumi said, now at 1137 Life. "With Common Ritual's effect, I release Majesty Magician in my hand. That's Level 8, which means I can Ritual Summon! Revélate, Majesty Diablo!"
Bursting forth from a circle of eight flames came the devilish mage, taking a spot next to Yumi's other monsters as electricity crackled in its hands. "Diablo's effect!" Yumi declared, wincing as her Life Points reduced by 1000 once again. "I'm setting my Pendulum Scales with the Scale 9 Takotaco and Scale 1 Big Bat Knight."
With her ability to Pendulum Summon available once again, Yumi wasted no time in doing just that. "Let's have an encore performance! Violentist and my second Takotaco, Pendulum Summon!"
"Level 3s," Izar observed, Yumi nodding in response. With a scoff, he limply spread his arms again. "Well, come at me," he mocked. "Do your best, now."
"I'm overlaying my Level 3 Violentist with my Level 3 Takotaco," Yumi declared. "Xyz Summon, Rank 3! Come on out, Illusion King Robbins!" As her magician gave a bow, it flicked its wrist to send a line of colorful handkerchiefs shooting out towards Izar's field. "I detach by of Robbins' Overlay Units to equip him with Rainbow Neos," Yumi explained, the monster retrieving an image of the card as its ATK raised to 4550.
"Is that all?" Izar said, now resting his head in his hand and his elbow on Ra's progressively more furious brow. "You continue to struggle, but nothing you've played so far can even come close to Ra's ATK."
"We'll see about that," Yumi countered, raising her hand. "Majesty Diablo, it's time to change places!" Her monster gave a shout, electricity sparking across its body before a bolt of lightning crashed into it. A dark cloud of dust replaced it on the field, the cloud slowly changing to a bright white, then a spiraling rainbow. "Take the stage, Majesty Magician!"
With a twirl of its staff, Yumi's favorite card blew away the smokescreen, revealing itself on the field. This was her key to victory. First, though, she had to take care of a few cards. "I banish Iron Resolve to activate Rank-Up-Magic Violet Force!" The card appeared, Iron Resolve being drawn into it as it lit up with a purple glow.
"I'm using the Level 6 Chasm Princess – Techne to reconstruct the Overlay Network!" Transforming into light, Techne and its Overlay Units rushed towards the Xyz portal, circling inside before a blast of energy exploded out of it. "Chaos, advance even further and take on new meaning! Use your insight to find the truth! Chaos Xyz Change! Come out, Chasm Gothi – Episteme!"
The Chaos energy flowing through Yumi surged, her wounds now seeming like a distant memory. While they hadn't exactly been healed, the pain was all but gone. It nearly made her burst out laughing, the urge to run wild coming back like before.
She had to keep herself focused, though. Just let it flow, she told herself as she breathed. Her eyes opened after that, gazing up at her towering monster. With a relieved sigh, she turned her attention back to the duel. "Now, Episteme, use your effect! With four Overlay Units, that means I can destroy four of your cards!"
"It's no use!" Izar sneered. "That effect doesn't even target, and if it did, Ra can't be destroyed by effects, either!"
"I'm not aiming for it," Yumi said, adding, "I'm taking out everything else!" Izar's Field, his Pendulum Cards, and MACRO Force were all blown away by a wave of Chaos, Izar gritting his teeth from atop the god. Ra seemed quite pleased with this development, though, roaring into the air and trying to knock its captor away now that it was freed from its binding.
Without PENANCE, Yumi could now attack without fear. Remembering from earlier, his Set card was an entirely useless Fusion Cancel, meaning there was now nothing to stand in her way. Not even Ra's ATK after she played her next card.
"I activate an Equip Magic, Unwavering Bonds!" The card depicted a set of warriors – a European knight, a Japanese samurai, an Old West gunslinger, a Dahomey Amazon, and a seemingly ordinary kid with glasses at the center – all placing their hands atop each other. "I equip it to Majesty Magician, giving him a new effect."
Yumi pointed forward and declared, "Battle!" As soon as she did, Majesty Magician raised its staff into the air, the rest of her monsters holding out a hand towards it. Energy flowed from each of them, her sorcerer crackling with new power.
"This is the effect," Yumi explained. "I'm attacking with Majesty Magician, which means he gets the combined ATK of all of my monsters!" This meant her card now outmatched even the god, boasting a considerable 14350.
"Too bad I won't be taking any damage," Izar said, MACRO Force appearing in front of him. "By banishing this, I can force one of my monsters to Defense Mode." Balling up a fist, he punched straight down onto Ra's head, sending it to all fours and forcing its wings to drape over itself.
With a scoff, he then said, "But I'm not done with this one yet. I use another of Ra's effects, detaching myself from it by using Fusion Cancel!" Yumi didn't even bother to question how that worked, simply watching as Izar reappeared on his side of the field, Life Points now at 6900 after absorbing a considerably weakened Ra's ATK.
Yumi frowned, feeling almost guilty about destroying the god in such a sorry state. Regardless, the attack was happening whether she liked it or not. "Majesty Magician, attack Ra! Majesty Eternity!" Flying into the air, Majesty Magician twirled its staff to build a considerable ball of energy onto the end. It soon rivaled Ra's own sphere mode, sitting atop the wizard's weapon as a swirling ball of multicolored light.
With a shout, the monster let loose, the attack impacting Ra and blowing it apart. While no damage was dealt, this took the god out of the fight and opened a path for Yumi's victory. Unfortunately, it would have to wait.
"Because I attacked with Majesty Magician and used that effect," she reluctantly explained, "I can't attack with any other monsters for the rest of the turn." Her frown quirked into a smile, though. "But I can still inflict damage," she said. "Big Bat Knight's Pendulum Effect lets me send Butter Fly to the Graveyard to hit you for 800!"
Izar didn't flinch as a flaming baseball smacked him square in the chest, even as it pushed him back. His only reaction was to let out a chuckle, still seemingly assured in his victory. His Life Points fell to 6100.
"Turn end," Yumi declared, taking another breath. The end was really in sight now. Just one more turn was all she needed.
At this point, it seemed impossible for her to lose. Her monsters were strong and Episteme could even end the Battle Phase using her Trap's borrowed effect. All Izar would have is his single drawn card. There was no way she could lose now, right?
The people of Earth seemed even more assured of Yumi's victory than she was now. Even the duelists, despite all of the tricks they'd seen Izar and his ilk pull up to now, were starting to feel confident that the game was over. Yumi had just killed an actual god, so where could it go from here?
"Things got dicey there for a second, but I think it's over now," Kyoko said confidently. In the back, Rio helped Yumi's grandmother to sit on a chair provided by Fukuro, the woman nearly collapsing from relief now that all of this seemed at an end.
"That one card was pretty freaky," Kazuhiko added, referring to Ra. "The hell was that thing, anyway?"
"Dead," Kyoko joked, sighing as she leaned forward on the back of Sakuya's chair. She poked the back of her head, teasing, "Hey, quit looking so grumpy. Isn't this, like, the only time it's acceptable for you to look happy?"
"It's not over yet," she replied, still not taking her eyes off the duel projected above them.
"Oh, come on," Kazuhiko said. "This duel's done." He even managed to get Hideo to agree with him.
Ami spoke next. "Wait, I don't think it is," she said darkly. "There's…"
Sakuya's fears would be vindicated in the worst way possible as Izar began his turn. "I activate Pot of MACRO," he said, holding up a copy each of PAIN, PENANCE, and JUDGMENT. "I return these three to my deck, then draw two new cards."
No one liked the sound of that. With a grin, he was clearly doing something dubious as he took his draw. "And this will be the end," he said, tossing out one of them. "I activate this – Resurrection of the Dead!"
A massive hole opened in front of him on the field. "You already know what this does," he said glibly. "I'm reviving God!" Golden flames shot out of the portal to the afterlife, a screech preceding the arrival of Izar's strongest stolen card once again.
This time was different, though. Rather than the mechanical beast from before, this Ra was a blazing beast. "Since Ra returned from the dead, this activates another effect called Phoenix Mode!" With a shriek, Ra's flames grew even stronger. "In Phoenix Mode, Ra is entirely invincible and can burn through any of your cards for 1000 Life Points."
Yumi could only stare in abject horror. "What?" The number of effects this thing had was just unfair.
"That's right!" he said. "Now, God Phoenix, burn everything!" At the cost of 6000 Life Points, Izar incinerated Yumi's entire field. She could do nothing as her monsters screamed, their bodies turning to charcoal before her eyes.
With Episteme gone, the power of Chaos left her, too shocked to channel it herself and now having nothing to facilitate it automatically. She was now as vulnerable as any other 13-year-old in this situation, a fact made clear by just how unbearable the heat from the fire felt at such close range.
But he wasn't done. Izar's Life Points ticked back down to 1, providing Ra with a measly 99 ATK. The actual number wasn't the point, however. "With your field clear, Ra attacks!" Ra rose into the sky, shining like the sun once again. With a screech, it dove down towards the field, Izar shouting, "Now die, Takano Yumi!"
Yumi tried to brace for the attack, but it was no use. The best she could do was cover her head and crouch down, feeling the hairs on her arms and the back of her neck singe at just the god's approach. With nothing to protect her, she took the full force of the God Phoenix, fire washing over her like a cloud releasing all of its rain at once.
Between the crackle of flames and Izar's laughter, Yumi's screams were entirely drowned out. This was no small feat given just how loudly she shrieked. The fire scorched through skin, muscle, and all the way down to bone. Hair and clothes were set alight. Even more than that, though, she could feel her soul itself begin to catch.
All she could do was scream until her body could make no more sound. How long did the attack go on for? She couldn't say. She couldn't even think now. It all hurt too much.
Despite the light, it was growing darker. Soon enough, she couldn't even feel the burns anymore. Not even the heat. In fact, she was getting cold. It was all just fading away. Soon enough, she wouldn't feel anything at all.
"That should do it," Izar said after collecting himself. On command, Ra moved back across the field as a wispy flame, looming over its controller and seething with malice.
"So, was it everything I promised?" he asked, pausing for a response that wouldn't come. "It seems like it was." He began to laugh again, his voice being the only one left to echo inside the void.
Opposite him, Yumi still remained in her hunched position. She didn't move save for a few small plumes of fire still burning on her back. Those died down quickly, though. Even they didn't have the energy to sustain themselves.
The last card in Yumi's hand fell to the ground after that. The image still hadn't appeared. Slowly, so did Yumi. Her body toppled over, the fight having finally left her. Despite still having 38 Life Points left, they'd disappear soon enough. In a duel like this, they represented a duelist's actual life. Yumi no longer had any of that.

Once per turn: You can detach 1 material from this card; your opponent discards their entire hand. If this card had an Equip Spell as Xyz Material when this card detached material, inflict 400 damage to your opponent x the number of cards discarded by this effect.

What if I just ended it here?
Really went all "Jonouchi Dies" with this chapter. In reference to that, if anyone is curious about the rationale for why Yumi is in considerably worse physical condition after taking God Phoenix compared to him, you have to remember that it was actually Gilford that got incinerated. Jonouchi just experienced what Gilford felt, so there was a level of separation there for him.
Yugioh fans not being pedantic about their interpretation of Ra's effect challenge (difficulty level: impossible). No one has ever gotten it 100% right since Ra in the manga and anime isn't so much a card as a list of challenges characters have to face while trying to beat Marik. Actually writing it out is kind of impossible because so much of what it does is inconsistent or difficult to actually implement as it's seen. This is just what I came up with that's as close as I think I can get it.
Yumi officially killed God with the power of friendship and card games. That's the Yugioh experience right there.
Our protagonist is dead now, so that's probably going to cause some problems for next time. Wonder what happens.
Thanks for reading. Share if you're enjoying. Always remember that next time is the end.
