Chapter 3
Momonga, Sebas and I were currently in Momonga's office, trying to figure out how to use the Mirror of Remote Viewing. Well, more like Momonga trying to figure it out. Sebas and I are just standing here while he waves his arms around. I am getting frustrated over our lack of progress.
I finally groaned after a while before going up to Momonga. "Move."
"H-Hey!"
I waved my arm, like how you would on a touchscreen phone and, voila! The mirror's screen moved. I heard Sebas clapping beside us.
"Congratulations, my Lords."
"Thank you, Sebas." I said before glaring at Momonga. I can't believe it took him almost 3 minutes to figure it out.
Momonga sighed at me before looking at Sebas. "Sorry for making you do this with us."
"Staying beside my masters and following their orders, that is the butler which Lord Touch Me created me for." He said with that same nonchalant tone in his voice.
"I see." Momonga murmured. "Now, let's search for areas where there might be people. But first, How did you do that, Oberon?"
I sighed in exasperation. "Just wave your arm like you would on a phone." I muttered to Momonga.
He did so and the screen once again moved. "Thank you."
I merely hummed at his thanks. As he searched around the areas, he eventually found a village. Although, something was moving in the village.
"A festival?" Momonga said. When I took a closer look, I furrowed my eyebrows. It doesn't look like a festival.
Sebas leaned in to take a closer look. "No. It is not."
Momonga zoomed in and we saw men in white armor slaughtering the villagers in cold blood. The villagers tried fleeing but none were spared.
Nothing too serious. I quite like the show they're putting up.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Wait. What's happening to me? I should feel pity for the death of those people. I should feel angry that these armored men were killing them and did not feel a single ounce of remorse.
But all I felt was enjoyment.
"What shall we do?" I looked at Sebas.
"Leave them. There's no reason or benefit for us to save them."
I looked at Momonga in shock.
"Understood." Sebas bowed his head slightly.
Momonga, what the fuck? You weren't like this back in YGGDRASIL. What is going on with us today?
First, I felt nothing when I saw people killing each other, and now Momonga doesn't even want to help them?
I snapped out of my thoughts when I heard Momonga chuckling. Why is he chuckling in a moment like this?
"Sebas, Oberon and I are going to this village."
Wait, what?
"Raise the security level of Nazarick to the maximum."
Sebas bowed his head. "Yes." He stood up straighter. "Shall I summon someone to accompany you, my Lords?"
I shook my head. "I'm sure we are capable of handling ourselves, Sebas."
The butler looked shocked before going back to his nonchalant expression. "But, Lord Oberon-"
"We'll be fine." I reassured him with a warm smile.
He reluctantly bowed his head slightly. "Understood."
"You should prepare the reserve forces. Send in a few soldiers who are skilled at stealth or have the invisibility skill." Momonga ordered.
"Yes, my lord."
As Sebas left, I looked at Momonga in confusion. "What made you change your mind?"
He stayed silent for a while before answering. "...I thought of Touch-san."
Ah. That explains it. Momonga told me that Touch Me saved him from a group of PKers when they first met. I guess he thought of that particular moment when seeing these villagers getting attacked.
Momonga summoned the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown before thrusting it forward.
"[Gate]."
.
Enri and her little sister, Nemu, were running away farther from the village. The soldiers were swiftly approaching with their swords in hand.
Why these soldiers were attacking their village, she'll never know. All she thought of was keeping her sister safe.
Nemu tripped and Enri tried helping her up. It was too late. The soldiers were already here. One of them brought their sword up for a slash. Enri managed to shield Nemu but she was injured in the process.
"Big sis!"
The soldier was about to slash at Enri again. She closed her eyes, getting ready for the pain that was about to come.
But it didn't. She opened her eyes to see the soldiers distracted by something. Something behind her.
"What the hell!?"
The exclamation from one of the armored men made her look behind her to see a purplish portal.
From the portal came an undead, a skeleton to be specific, with black robes with gold thread edges. It had large bone-like shoulder pads with a ruby in the middle and it held golden staff in its hand that had 7 gems in snake mouths.
Another person came out of the portal. A blue-skinned creature with black, revealing clothing that is stone-like in texture with golden flower decorations. Enri could have mistaken them for a female. The creature had butterfly features, including blue and pink wings and what seemed like fluffs on his body. Enri resorted to calling the creature a 'they' for now, since she doesn't know their gender.
The three soldiers backed away from the beings in fear while Enri held on to Nemu tighter.
The skeleton extended its hand towards one of the soldiers and chanted with a deep voice, "[Grasp Heart]."
A holographic heart appeared on the skeleton's hand and it crushed it, causing the knight he pointed at to collapse.
The one with the wings had a seed on their hand. "[Death Seed]." Enri noticed that they had a deep, distorted voice, almost as if multiple people were speaking at once. She assumed they were males due to their deep voice.
He threw the seed towards another soldier. Somehow, the seed planted itself into the armor. Almost immediately after it was planted, roots started growing from inside the man's body, impaling and constricting him brutally before he finally collapsed.
"Monsters!?" The last soldier exclaimed. He backed away as the two monsters approached him.
"You can chase women and children, but you can't go against someone different from you?" The skeleton said.
"I can't believe we went through the trouble of coming here. You will assist us with our tests."
The soldier tried running away as a last attempt to save his life, but it was futile.
"[Dragon Lightning]."
Lightning instantly appeared from the finger of the skeleton before the soldier was electrocuted to death.
"Pathetic. He dies easily with mere 5th-tier magic." The blue-skin said. He turned towards Enri, who was still hugging Nemu while cautiously looking at them. Enri
He kept a close eye on her while the skeleton turned back towards the soldier.
"[Create Middle Tier Undead: Death Knight]!"
Black smoke appeared in the air before it engulfed a dead soldier completely from head to toe. The corpse started twitching and convulsing violently as black ink covered him. He started to grow larger in size before it turned into a black armor-clad skeleton with a sword and shield made from the same material. A Death Knight.
"Death Knight. Kill the knights that are attacking this village." The skeleton ordered his new servant.
The Death Knight roared before it sprinted towards the direction of the village.
The two monsters turned back towards the sisters.
"Now, what do we do with these little children?" The blue-skin asked.
"Right now, the ones wearing white armor are our enemy."
"That won't be a problem. They're easy to take care of."
The skeleton seemed to just notice the gash. "It looks like you're injured." He took something out of his pocket. "Here. Drink this." It was a red potion.
Enri recoiled from the item, thinking it was blood. She reluctantly reached her hand out.
"I-I'll drink it! But my little sister-!"
"Big sis! No!" Nemu grabbed her sister's forearm back.
As Enri scolded Nemu, the blue-skin was slowly losing its cool.
"Just drink the potion, you stupid bitch!" He yelled at them while Enri and Nemu cowered from his loud, distorted voice.
"W-Wait, Oberon! Don't rush things! Don't make them any more scared than they are now!" The skeleton scolded his companion.
"... Fine." 'Oberon' growled.
The skeleton turned back towards them, still offering the red potion in his hands. "It's healing medicine. Drink it quickly."
Enri took the potion and drank it. The large wound on her back healed with a green light. She looked at this in awe.
"No way…"
"The pain is gone, isn't it?" Enri turned towards the skeleton when he asked her the question. She nodded in affirmation.
The skeleton hummed in thought. "Do you know what magic is?"
"Y-Yes. A pharmacist, who is a friend of mine, sometimes comes to the village and uses magic."
"I see. Then this is easy to explain. My friend and I are magic casters."
The skeleton put his hand out where glyphs appeared as he chanted spells. A green magic shield manifested around the two sisters.
"I cast protection magic on you. You are safe as long as you stay there." He turned towards Oberon. "Do you have the items?"
Oberon opened black portal and took out two horns. He threw them inside the shield.
"Just in case, we will leave these to you. If you blow them, an army of goblins you can command will appear before you. Use the item to protect yourselves."
They started walking towards the direction of the village when Enri called out to them, stopping them in their tracks.
"Th-Thank you very much for saving us!"
"Thank you very much!" The two sisters bowed on their knees in thanks.
"Don't worry about it." Oberon waved dismissively as he started walking again.
"Wh-What is your name?"
"My name?"
"Yes! I already know your companion's name but I still don't know yours!"
Oberon looked at the girl before looking at the skeleton.
"You will do well to remember my name. I am Ainz Ooal Gown!"
.
These soldiers are not much of a fight at all.
Right after we left the two girls in the forest with nothing but a shield and the Horn of the Goblin General, we flew towards the village but not before giving ourselves disguises.
There were no changes towards Ainz. I didn't know why he would just introduce himself with the guild name but I just went with it. I did ask him why. No, he didn't answer me. He just told me that he'll tell me later.
Anyway, back on topic. Ainz just wore a red mask with blue eyes that seemed to be grinning. The Mask of Envy. A giveaway item from YGGDRASIL for players and it was only exclusive during Christmas Eve. He also wore plated gloves to hide his hands while his robe covered his ribs.
I, on the other hand, was given a black cloak that can hide my unnatural appearances, i.e. my blue skin, antenna, wings and more. Ainz didn't want me to change into my human form because he wanted both of us in full power. The cloak also came with a hood to hide my face.
My masquerade mask does stay, but I just don't want anyone else to see it. Ainz said that the townsfolk could get scared of our faces, like the two girls back in the forest. I'm just hoping those two don't snitch on us.
Now, enough about our appearances and let's get back to the fight. The villagers were all gathered in one place as the soldiers formed a perimeter around them. All of them looked at the Death Knight in fear.
For some reason, I relished it all. All I feel towards the scene is enjoyment and irritance. I enjoyed the carnage, I feel irritated at how weak these people actually are. An instinct of mine made me ignore my previous thoughts of why I can't feel anything else other than those two and focused on the massacre.
One soldier tried running away from the Death Knight but it transformed into a black smoke and materialized in front of the coward. He was slashed in half.
Another one tried to be brave and attacked the Death Knight. His sword shattered upon impact and he was tossed aside.
Left and right, soldiers either tried to run away or attack the summoned undead. I noticed that the only ones he didn't slice down were the soldiers attacking it. I guess it hates cowards as much as I do.
"B-Bastards!"
I looked towards the direction of the voice. It was another knight looking at the other units while pointing at the Death Knight. Must be the captain then.
"I am not a person who should die in a place like this! Buy some time! Be my shield!"
Wow. I can tell by the look on his face that he was afraid but I didn't think he would just leave his men in the dirt like that to save his own skin. Pathetic.
The Death Knight started walking towards him, like some kind of slasher from a horror movie coming to kill his latest victim.
"Money! I'll give you money!" He pleaded desperately. "200 gold pieces! No, 500 gold pieces! 1-1000 gold pieces." While he continued bribing his soldiers, he didn't notice that one of the dead corpses grabbed his ankle. He screamed and fainted at the slightest glimpse of the now Undead corpse.
Right. I forgot about that ability. Whenever the Death Knight kills its intended target, the dead body would turn into an undead. It's pretty useful when it comes to fights in which we are outnumbered but even if we are, we would come out unscathed anyway. I mean, We are LVL. 100!
The captain woke up shortly after he fainted. And just in time too. The Death Knight was already towering over him. It drove its sword onto his torso, causing blood to spew out.
The idiot was repeatedly stabbed while he begged the soldiers to save him from the Death Knight. Not one person moved in their place and just watched as their captain was brutally skewered to death.
What a pathetic excuse of a captain.
Everyone started backing away from the Death Knight before another knight spoke up. "Calm down! Retreat! Once I give the signal, call the horses and the horseback archers! The others will buy us time! Begin!" He ordered them.
Is he the real captain in disguise of a regular soldier or what? If he is, then no wonder the other guy was a weakling.
Some of the remaining soldiers charged at the Death Knight. Some of them were thrown aside by its shield. Most of them were slashed by its sword. The guy who ordered them was the last to charge at the undead.
Didn't even get a chance to attack.
He got decapitated.
Well, now I'm bored. I looked at Ainz, who was flying beside me. "I'm getting tired of the lack of challenge these guys are giving us."
"Indeed. Should I stop it?"
"It's your choice. But I recommend stopping it. My fun is ruined."
He looked back towards the Death Knight and shouted, "Death Knight! That's enough!"
Everyone in the village looked up at us. We floated towards the ground. Even without the aid of my wings, I can still fly using Fly Magic.
Ainz spread his arms slightly. "Nice to meet you all. My name is Ainz Ooal Gown and this is my companion, Oberon." He introduced us and I just glared at them from under my hood. Distaste rose up within me at the sight of these cowards.
Something tells me that I have some serious superiority complex.
"I'll have all of you return alive. And tell your superi- your owner of this! Next time you cause trouble in this area, I will bring death to your kingdom. Go! And be sure to tell everyone my name!"
Wow. He basically just introduced me and acted like he was the boss. My best friend forgot about me.
The soldiers ran away, some stumbling along the way. I snickered quietly at their foolish acts.
"You…"
We turned towards the villagers.
"Wh-Who are you, sirs?"
'Who are you, sirs!?' Did you listen to a word he said!?
"We saw this village being attacked and came to save you."
I just let Ainz do the talking. I was afraid that if I talked I would say something very, very unpleasant.
"Now, you are all sage. I want you to be at ease." Ainz said as he walked towards them. He stopped when he noticed that the villagers were looking at him in worry.
Cowards.
Woah. That word just came out of nowhere.
Ainz sighed in exasperation. I did the same thing. "However, it wasn't for free. We would like to be thanked for it."
They all sighed in relief. That's it? They feel at ease when they think we come for money?
This might be easier than I thought it would.
.
After they warmed up to us, we went to the Village Chief's house where he told us everything he could about this new world.
He and his wife actually believed that Ainz and I were magic casters. I'm guessing they're pretty common around here.
Ainz and I found out that money from YGGDRASIL doesn't work here. It is worth at least twice as a standard gold coin in this world, but it could be dangerous to use from now on.
We asked about the kingdoms around us. This village, also known as Carne Village, and Nazarick are part of the Re-Estize Kingdom. Close by to the mountain range that runs north and south is the Baharuth Empire.
I didn't really care about the history of these kingdoms, so I practically zoned out after they mentioned the war between the Re-Estize Kingdom and Baharuth Empire.
I did hear something about a 'Slane Theocracy' but like I said, I don't care.
"Is something wrong?"
I was suddenly snapped out of my thoughts. I turned to glare at the voice but found it was just the Village Chief.
"No, nothing's wrong." I politely reassured him with a warm smile. "Please tell us more."
"Y-Yes. The closest city near this village is E-Rantel. Goblins, orcs, and ogres appear around this area, but adventurers hunt here, so you should be safe as long as you follow along the roads."
Adventurers? Never heard of them in YGGDRASIL.
"Adventurers?" Ainz asked him before I could.
"They are people who defeat monsters in exchange for a reward. There is a guild in E-Rantel where you can request their services."
I hummed in thought, finally being interested in this conversation. "What is the population of E-Rantel?"
"I'm sorry. I don't know the exact number."
"It's fine."
I'm putting this Adventurer's Guild in my bucket list.
.
The villagers were praying and paying their respects to the dead in the graveyard outside Carne Village as Ainz and Oberon were watching from the side.
Ainz holding a small wand with a blue gem under his robe. It was the Wand of Resurrection, an item from YGGDRASIL. It's self explanatory, it can raise the dead at the cost of Exp. points.
He thumbed the wand, debating on what to do.
They had taken advantage of the Village's gratitude for information. They did receive valuable information.
Ainz shifted his gaze to his right, where Oberon stood, watching the funeral with an emotionless expression.
He can't just not bring his friend into his decision.
"Oberon." Ainz whispered to the Demon Fairy, causing him to shift his head slightly.
Oberon noticed the wand in Ainz's hand and understood what he was about to ask him. He looked over to the mourning villagers, especially the two sisters, both of them crying over the loss of their parents.
Oberon wanted to say yes. That they could grant the town's happiness back. That it was the right thing to do.
That thought was immediately overshadowed by a voice. It was telling him that these people don't deserve it. To let them mourn and not waste their powers over something so small.
After gathering up his thoughts together, Oberon made his decision.
"We've done enough. They'll just have to deal with the fact that we saved them."
Ainz nodded and put the wand back in his inventory.
They both left the burial while the sun set over the horizon.
.
"I see."
As we were walking back to the village, Ainz told me a theory about the people attacking. He told me that the Slane Theocracy impersonated the Baharuth Empire to create another war between them and the Re-Estize Kingdom.
Pretty smart, actually.
"It's possible. I should've kept one of the knights in order to get more information. Right now, our best course of action is to wait and see what happens." Ainz told me.
"Great." I sighed. God, I just want to sleep right now. But when we first came here, I found out that I don't need sleep. Major oof.
"Well, even if we managed to piss them off, it's not like I'm worried or anything. What can the Slane Theocracy even do to us?" I said with a small smirk.
"You didn't listen to what the Village Chief said, didn't you?" Ainz said bluntly.
"No, I did not."
He sighed at my answer but didn't answer my question. For a moment, we just walked in comfortable silence. The sun was slowly lowering over the horizon.
I stopped to look at it. So, this is what the sun looks like. It's beautiful. Ainz must have noticed me stopping because he stood by my side.
"I've never seen a sunset before." I said serenely.
"Neither have I. I must say, it is quite the sight."
We eventually had to go back to Carne Village.
.
When we made it there, the villagers were fixing the damage from the attack.
We had decided to say our goodbyes since our business here is done. A man carrying a wooden plank passed by us and I couldn't resist the urge to growl.
"I noticed your irritation when we first came here. Are you alright, Oberon?" Ainz said in concern. He must have noticed my growl. Damn it.
I shook my head to clear my thoughts. "I'm fine, Ainz. It's just…"
How do I explain this to him?
"It's like, there's something inside of me that makes me hate people. Humans, specifically. I've been trying to hold it the entire time we're here but clearly, it's not working." I said with a fake chuckle. I didn't want to worry him.
"I see." Ainz nodded. "Just know that no matter what happens, I'll be here with you." He said as he put his hand on my shoulder. I put mine on top of his.
"Thanks, Momo." I smiled at him. I could tell he was smiling at me too. However, I noticed a commotion happening at the center of the town. Ainz followed my gaze and saw the same thing.
We looked at each other before sighing.
Great. Just when we were about to relax.
"What's wrong, Village Chief?" Ainz asked.
"Oh! Lord Ainz, Lord Oberon. It seems some knight-like people are heading toward this village."
I raised an eyebrow at this. Really? The village getting attacked so soon? I wonder what god they worship here because they're getting some tough luck.
"I see." Ainz mumbled.
All of them were looking at us with hopeful expressions and I felt myself grow annoyed.
Of course. They expect us to handle the situation. But I guess that's natural since we were basically the ones who saved them.
"I understand. Please have the surviving villagers gather around your house. The Village Chief will come with us to the square." That caused a wave of relief to wash over the villagers.
Ugh. Here we go again.
.
A/N: I am so sorry for the late update. School is getting harder and I didn't have the time to make a new chapter. Updates will be getting slow from now. Other than that, please tell me what I did wrong so that I can improve. Thanks for reading, y'all!
