"Come with me?"
She held his gaze, begging him to say yes. He held her hands loosely, her fingers rubbing his soft skin gently as she had done many times before.
He broke the contact and her gaze when he answered, "I can't."
She understood why he couldn't leave, but wasn't prepared to go without a fight. She had to at least try, so that in years to come she would know that she did all that she could not to lose the man she loved.
"Don't go?" He asked, not quite pleading, his voice broken from raw emotion.
She had to, and he knew it.
It just some times doesn't work out the way you plan things to. Though they loved one another, cared and trusted, as they had never done before, the rest of the world was determined to pull them down. They had tried to make it work, but it was a losing battle.
"You know I have to Horatio......... Come with me? It'll be different; new place, new people, a fresh start for us, a chance to make it work. No one to hold us down."
She knew his answer the first time had been final, but she all ways believed that there was all ways hope. It was one of the many things that he loved about her.
Unable to speak, he shock his head- no.
A tear escaped her eye, which she bashfully wiped away. But as she tried to stop the tears they just cascaded down her face. This time he was the one to wipe away her tears, just as he let one full from his own eyes.
"Oh," Calleigh tried to laugh. "This is stupid... us crying like this." She laughed again, but this time out of sadness.
"We're for ever, remember Cal, no matter what, we're for ever."
She nodded, once again swept with emotion.
"I remember."
She reached up, for the last time, and kissed him softly on the lips. He hummed softly before she broke the contact and pulled away.
Turning, she started to walk away. Only after a few paces she stopped and thought about looking back, for just one last time, but resisted knowing that she then wouldn't be able to leave.
One step, two steps, three steps, and she was at his door, opening it and then closing it (definitively). A few more steps and she reached her car, opening and closing the door. She knew that she shouldn't drive as she could hardly see through all her tears, but knowing that she had to leave now. Putting the keys in to the ignition and putting on her seat belt, she pulled away from the curb and drove to Miami airport by herself.
