Chapter Six
The last light of day faded as Siria sat with Aravinda at the deserted campfire. They were cleaning the dishes. Aravinda looked at Siria. "Mouse told me what you're going to do for her."
"Yeah"
"Be careful, Lev is really protective of her." Siria looked at her and continued washing a bowl. "Seriously, Lev's changed since Mouse came around. She is his entire world."
Siria stifled a laugh. "I'm only getting her a book. It's not like I'm taking his place. Why are you so knowledgeable about this guy anyway?"
"We used to be together."
"Siria dropped the dish she was washing. "What? When?"
"We'd been going together since before the virus. My parents had just died before the evacuation so I moved in with Lev's family. His parents sent us on some bus out to an old summer camp. It was fun; a permanent vacation. But then the adults started dieing and soon it was just us kids. That's when we met Hawk and Pride; they were like us unsure if we should go back to the City. Well actually Hawk knew he didn't want to back and pretty much convinced the rest of us not to go.
Well after that kids started vibrating toward us, especially the younger ones who didn't know how to get back to the city. We started taking care of all of them and one day this kid who was just traveling asked us what tribe we were. We didn't even understand what he was talking about but Lev picked up the lingo pretty quick and so from then on we became a tribe. There was one girl, Rava, she showed special interest in Lev. Pride tried to warn me but I didn't listen I mean there was so much going on and Lev could take care of himself. I mean I trusted him.
One night, I was cleaning up and had to get some water. I started hearing voices as I got closer to the river. Normally I wouldn't have cared, some of the older kids went down to the river to have some 'time' to themselves, but then I recognized Lev's voice and a kinda suppressed giggle. I moved a little closer...and that's when I saw it. He was making love to her. He said he'd wait for me, but...."
"You don't have to finish."
"No, I'm over it I promise. Be sides there's a moral. I didn't talk to Lev after that you know let him explain and so when we did start to talking it would just kind a hang over us."
"Did you ever talk about it?"
"No, it's still there."
"So you still love him."
"I didn't say that, but it is in the way of our friendship in a way; under stand what I'm saying?"
"Kind of, but what happened to Rava?"
"Chosen took her when she was in the City."
"Oh"
"Siria, Why are you here?
Siria gave a weak smile "I'm here cause I fell in love and broke my chin on the landing."
"Oh man, that must have hurt."
"Yeah it did. His name is Jay."
"Jay, I thought he was with Ebony, they were supposed to run off together."
"Well that didn't happen."
"Oh well then you'll have to explain."
Siria sighed and began with the night she met Jay.
Days later Siria stood in a small clearing practicing her bow and arrow. Her mind wasn't into it, so she missed almost every shot. Lately she had been thinking about Jay. She wasn't sure if should go back...to the Mall at least. Telling Aravinda how she and Jay had got together had made her realize how quickly they had gotten into things, and then Trudy, the baby, everything had just spiraled out of control and now she was here banished the middle of no where. A serge of anger went through Siria's body as she aimed and fired; bull's eye. "Nice shot"
"What do you want Lev?"
"The pleasure of your company, Siria, I haven't seen you for days."
"Go away"
"No"
"Yes, scumbag"
"Did Aravinda tell you that story about us?" Siria glared at Lev. "I guess so. Ok look despite hearing that story will you give me one itty bitty chance?"
Siria sighed. "I don't see why?"
"Everyone deserves a chance, even scumbags like me." Lev smiled.
"Oh really, so when you fall in love with some one, who already has somebody but yet you act on those feelings and when that somebody comes back that person, who you love and thought loved you back, goes back to the person they were first with, do they deserve a chance?"
"Is this a trick question?" Giving a frustrated sigh Siria turned to walk away. "No, Siria, wait." Lev grabbed Siria's arm turning her around. "I honestly believe that when you love someone there should be an understanding, I mean I would wait to let things grow before rushing into it."
"So I was just too fast is that it...too easy?" Siria screamed.
"No that's not what I mean." Lev looked at Siria as tears welled up in her eyes. He pushed back one of her braids that had fallen loose. "People fall in love at different paces; maybe this 'somebody' was just too slow."
Siria nodded in understanding. "Maybe..." She quickly looked away form Lev. "I should really get back to camp now." Siria picked up her things and quickly rushed off. She then stopped giving Lev one last look. She was afraid, when she had looked into his eyes she had seen something...something she had seen before, but in another pair of eyes...brown eyes.
I like this chapter, but one of my favorites is coming up...hint hint!
