Amelia had barely gotten any sleep, ran late, and was incredibly low on caffeine. She was rushing to get out of her car, practically taking overly large steps to get across the parking lot, as she already felt the exhaustion seeping through her.
She badly needed the coffee fix.
It also didn't help the fact that the last time she had one was back at Arizona's place. When they were catching up on her couch as they shared the box of donuts she brought.
The memories struck her for a moment. As if Amelia was still having a hard time processing how everything seemed to have happened so fast. That they had been dancing around for a decade, and it all had been tackled in less than 2 hours or so.
So in conclusion, they both wanted each other.
Those three nights happened, and even without it— Arizona just confirmed the feeling was there. Had been there, for the longest time.
They kissed.
And Amelia kinda wanted to do it again, even if they both mutually agreed they were better off as friends.
Just what the fuck had she gotten herself into?
Amelia pondered for a moment, thinking how else could she go on with her day, let alone for the rest of her life - and only have the blonde at a distance, as her friend, and nothing more?
They had almost gotten too far last night, rather she — with her wandering hands and how they casually slipped each other's tongue at each other's mouths as if they had been known to have been kissing each other for the longest time. God.
Thinking about last night wouldn't help.
They already had their closure… as friends .
Amelia should have already been fine with that.
At least she had the assurance that they were okay.
At least Amelia still gets to have her… as a friend . And god, the label seemed loaded and overambitious but she promised Arizona that she would try, and so that was exactly what she was going to do.
Amelia heaved a sigh as she was able to hop into the elevator lift just in time. She swiftly pressed the button that would take her to her floor for rounds, and just as the elevator doors were about to fully close, a hand got in the way, prying itself open.
Arizona.
This was all a joke, wasn't it?
Arizona looked insanely hot with her beige trench coat, underneath an all-black top and high-waisted trousers get-up that accentuated her curves. Amelia failed to restrain how her eyes widened, and the gulp that she forcefully swallowed in her throat as the blonde greeted her with a smile, entering the same space as her.
"Good morning!" The blonde greeted her with so much cheer it made her wince. Amelia could only hum in response, as she stepped aside giving her enough room in the enclosed space. She waved her hand dismissively as it seemed she felt something was stuck in her throat, making it extremely difficult to utter a word. Great.
A quick hey was all that she managed to say. And of course , a simple nod and hey would never be enough for Arizona.
The fetal surgeon creased her eyebrows, as she enveloped her arms across her chest, facing her. "Are you okay?"
Anelia wanted to scoff at how Arizona would still have the audacity to ask that of her because of course, she was not. Not when she wanted to get a repeat of last night, and not when she was painstakingly aware that she obviously couldn't.
She let out a breath impatiently, as she peered her head up to find that it would take a few more seconds and two more floors before she could get to her destination. Elevator rides and being trapped in the same space as Arizona are two of the things Amelia never had issues with, not until last night happened. "Yes, of course. It's just… I have barely had any sleep since…" she chewed the inside of her mouth, almost close to tasting blood, trying to erase the memories of how a few hours ago, she had gotten a taste of Arizona in her mouth. "Last night."
" Oh." Arizona quipped, swiftly nodding in understanding as if the snapshots of everything that happened the night before, flew into her head, also losing her capacity to think. "Well to be fair, I wasn't able to sleep well either, and I wanted to ask if you're up for coffee—-"
Ding.
The elevator doors opened, and before she even realized it herself, Amelia was already making a run from it, from her, bidding goodbye and leaving a confused Arizona from behind.
-x-
It was like Arizona never got the memo, really.
Amelia could feel the weight of her gaze even from her peripheral view. Even from afar, even while she was occupied with her own damn consult - she could tell Arizona was looking at her.
She cleared her throat, gathering all the energy that she could muster as the tip of her pen sank deeper into her clipboard furiously.
This was a mistake.
She shouldn't be here. It was not as if she was left with a choice either.
Amelia received a page from the pit for a quick neuro consult, and that was fine. She was perfectly fine to take on the task until she realized her very same patient also happened to be a kid, who needed a peds consult at the same time.
Alex was still stuck somewhere in surgery, so, she was left with no one but —
"Frank, right?" The blonde's chirpy voice leaped from behind, making Amelia jolt from where she stood. She confirmed the name of their patient with a soft smile, looking back up from her charts, and leaned towards both of Frank's parents for a quick handshake.
Amelia hated it. Arizona was simply doing her job, showing up where she was asked, yet it still bothered the crap out of her.
She could feel the warmth of Arizona's body radiating from her behind, and Amelia was stuck thinking if Arizona had meant to stand as close as possible behind her because she was completely aware that she was avoiding her.
Amelia had just finished her consult, and it was all up to Arizona now to complete the rest. But before Amelia could even move aside to give them the space, Arizona had inadvertently leaned towards the gurney, placing her hand on the side rail, which also kept Amelia from stepping away.
The movement was too abrupt that it also made her suppress the slight whimper that let out her mouth as she felt the blonde's chest graze her back.
In the middle of work.
Arizona, really?
She sighed in annoyance, as she was left with no choice but to wait until Arizona finished her final assessment of Frank.
It was a relief that it was nothing serious, a quick assessment without any critical intervention needed. But both she and Arizona took their time carefully before they called Jo in to proceed with the other medical tests just to be sure.
Just as Arizona had finished, and Jo came to take Frank in, Amelia gave a firm nudge on the arm looped behind her, as she moved aside quickly.
She meant to walk away as fast as possible because staying was no longer an option, and she assumed Arizona had somewhere else to be because when she turned around, the blonde had already disappeared completely, probably off somewhere for another consult, which was fine by all means.
The next stop was the supply room closet, and look- maybe pulling up suture kits and blanket warmers wasn't exactly what she needed. Hell, she could easily have any of the interns do it for her but maybe she was also using the quick trip to the supply room as an excuse to hide from Arizona.
A minute ago, she was avoiding her - and now it all felt as if she was a 12-year-old, purposely hiding from someone who had effortlessly turned her night around just a couple of hours ago.
Amelia had no idea how else she could keep up, and she was already done overthinking things and more than exhausted doing nothing but getting rid of Arizona every chance she got, so, maybe she also needed to be stuck in the supply room closet, to properly think as well.
But who was she kidding?
Nothing about their situation required proper thought. She was a grown-ass woman, she knew what she got herself into.
Okay, so what if she had been right all this time that Arizona wanted her the same time she did?
Their moment at the kitchen sink, when she had accidentally burnt her fingers in the process, Arizona had already known right there and then, at the same time as Amelia, that they were that close to almost kissing each other until Mich showed up.
It was relatively new to hear it from Arizona herself, that she had been jealous of Matt the same way Amelia was with Mich, let alone those three damn unspoken three nights, added with everything else that happened a couple of hours back - the one where the night had been capped off by the most earth-shattering, mind-bending kiss Amelia ever had.
From face value and by how she described it, it all seemed as if the stars had aligned for them.
Until it didn't.
Until her world turned upside down when Arizona decided they were better off as friends, putting aside everything they wanted from each other.
Until Arizona told her she was someone Amelia wanted, but didn't exactly need and how there was a difference between the two. How Amellia had no choice but to respect that one thing that she asked from her, even if it almost broke her.
Even when she pulled back from Arizona, watching her with dark eyes and bruised lips, and how she ended the night - reminding her that they were set to a fresh start as friends.
So in conclusion, Amelia could deal with the aftermath of being respectfully rejected, in whatever way she wanted. Even if that meant setting aside a few days to avoid Arizona. Even if that meant taking a few minutes to lock herself up in the nearest supply room closet to process everything that happened between them in the last 24 hours.
Arizona should at least give her that.
-x-
It was becoming a thing. Their thing.
Maggie would take one full look at her and would quickly get an idea that something was wrong with her.
She had barely touched the salad she bought, could barely even look at it because it was the same horrible salad she and Arizona talked about last night. Could barely even spare the chance to look anywhere else at the cafeteria because the resident, Leah - whom she once knew as someone Arizona had slept with - was just sitting at the nearby table beside her. Even the buffet service right in front of her made her even more miserable as boxes of stale donuts were stacked just right beside the cashier. So not only had she managed to lose her appetite, but everything from where she sat made things much worse as she was being reminded of Arizona.
And of course, that got Maggie's attention once again
"So, I'm assuming things did not go well —"
"Arizona and I kissed." She casually imposed without even blinking, watched as Maggie's eyes widened, with her forkful of pasta she was about to put in her mouth caught frozen in midair. Amelia thought Maggie at least deserved to know, and maybe she'd feel better being able to open it up with someone she fully trusted. So she pressed her lips together, prompting the knuckles of her hand on her chin as she leaned in towards her. "Last night, before I left her house — I mean. "
Maggie without a second placed her fork back on her plate, pulled her chair closer to her, and was more than invested to learn more about the truth she just let out. "W-when you said kiss, did you mean it like on the cheek or like a peck, like you need to lay out the specifics —" she inquired.
Amelia, in her own way, failed to keep the smirk and somehow smug look off her face because there was utterly no denying that last night was special and heated - and so damn heavenly.
"Like a full-on make-out session on her driveway, tongue-contact, groping each other's breasts kind of thing." She shrugged, catching the surgeon beside her gawking at how direct Amelia had been, and was rather impressed and astonished at the same time, in the way that was definitely something Maggie would do.
"Well not that detailed… but oh my god, Amelia." Maggie squawked, putting a hand on her mouth to cover the initial reaction she wanted out, which Amelia assumed was by screaming.
Maggie glanced at Amela with uncertainty, as if she was still in complete denial that Amelia had it in her to do any of those things to the blonde.
And well, Maggie should know - it was ten fucking years of doing nothing, so there was that.
"I know."
Maggie wanted to know more.
Of course, she wanted the complete details of what happened before it led to that moment, and definitely the aftermath of it all but they both stopped right in their tracks the minute April entered the cafeteria, together with Arizona.
April waved them hello while she and Arizona waited in line at the buffet service, throwing the same damn look Maggie gave her when she first opened up about Arizona.
Amelia just knew what they were talking about - and it sure as hell that it had nothing to do with lunch let alone about work.
-x-
She wasn't lucky the third time around.
Because this time, Arizona had managed to drag her by the arm into a vacant on-call room, a cup of coffee in her free hand bought solely for her, and who was Amelia to say no to that?
The on-call room, despite how empty it was, had never felt this uncomfortable, and, so was Arizona trapping her against the door with a concerned look imprinted on her face.
Amelia could feel her knees about to give up, as she felt Arizona's breath fanning the column of her throat. They were that close once again, and she hated how she literally could look anywhere but at the blonde's pleading eyes.
"You're avoiding me." More of a statement, and less of an accusation and it was driving her crazy. The way she smelt, and how she held her. If Arizona would also make an attempt to have a do-over of all the sounds she emitted when Amelia had her hands and mouth all over her from last night, then Amelia would be a hundred percent sure she'd lose it. Again.
And she was scared. To be at loss, to be swept up once again by the feeling. She was being respectful. She was giving Arizona what she asked for, but she was making it all extremely difficult to let her be.
Amelia was never one to be predictable. It was what she kept telling herself. She was not going to simply give in - even if that was the whole truth.
She was angry at Arizona.
Yeah, being angry sounded right.
Because how else was she allowed to feel but be angry? She had no room to tell her she still wanted Arizona and more than that. Had no room to process what last night held because they were nothing. Had no chance of asking her out, because Arizona wanted to be friends. Couldn't kiss the life out of her because Arizona was off-limits.
So how dare Arizona was to even look slightly offended that Amelia was avoiding her? She had no right, not when Amelia was simply giving her what she wanted.
"There's a difference between wanting space and being avoidant—" Amelia hissed, squinting her eyes hard. Gesturing the life out of Arizona to get out of the way, Arizona had acted out of pure instinct, as she blocked both of Amelia's wrists and held them firmly against the door. Amelia took a deep breath, as she held her ground, trying not to be bothered by the residual fact that the movement turned her on.
"Have you been avoiding me because of what happened last night, Amelia?" The blonde asked in the softest, most genuine tone, as deep lines formed on her forehead with curiosity. Despite the realization, Arizona still managed to pin her body against the wood. She should know Amelia was already slightly trembling, unaware of the effect Arizona had on her. "I just gave you what you asked for…" Arizona shrugged, as she tried to reason and that was enough for Amelia to throw hands. The fucking audacity that she had to downplay everything that happened last night.
" Quit acting as if it wasn't what you wanted too —"
"You're right." Arizona resigned, staring her down with darkened blue eyes, a firm line etched across her lips. "I wanted it and more , and I haven't stopped thinking about last night, too." She admitted as her gaze dropped down to Amelia's lips, the grip on both sides of her wrists had just gotten tightened right there and then.
Amelia scoffed, thinking so much of how the blonde had the gall to initiate the friendship bullshit , and now she found herself being cornered in the room by the said person, telling her what exactly?
It was all counterproductive to even be doing this.
Amelia knew it was a mistake to ask for that stupid kiss and pretend like it was only nothing the next day.
They barely made it through those forgotten three nights, how else could they get past everything that happened the night before?
"You gotta be kidding me right? You wanted this, Arizona." She pointed out, blinking hard. Amelia sighed impatiently, pulling away with so much force. "You wanted to be friends, and that's exactly what I'm giving you. But I can't do this all alone, you need to do your part too because I'm sick of you being literally everywhere. " She exclaimed, swiftly stepping out of Arizona's space, as the blonde loosened her grip, leaving her without another word.
She should have dealt with it in a much better way, in a manner that was less cruel, but Amelia was beyond exhausted and angry, and she also had to keep her head focused on her upcoming surgery, so being a little frustrated and antsy towards the blonde now could be valid, Amelia hoped…
-x-
The surgery went well.
Close to 6 hours off her craniotomy procedure.
She could already feel her body starting to get numb, and exhaustion pouring all over her system but she still had managed to scrub out with a smile on her face.
Nothing could be more fulfilling than getting to save a life at the end of the day. The sentiment was definitely something her brother would definitely say, and she found herself repeating it in her mind — a constant reminder to be appreciative of the little things that could mean the world to the person they operated on. To celebrate the victories of successful surgeries, and this one she just had, deserved one.
Amelia felt content, and happy - and normally after successful surgeries, she'd share with either Maggie or Meredith as soon as Amelia would catch them at the attendings' lounge, but neither of the two was there as she had been greeted by the blonde surgeon, who was sitting against the small desk beside the coach, head buried in her own tablet, as she was probably going through her charts.
Their eyes met, and Amelia had been in over her head for the last six hours that she had forgotten about Arizona. There was a look of longing they both shared, as Arizona pulled the device aside to focus her attention solely on her.
It made Amelia's heart swell. Because neither Meredith nor Maggie was there, but Arizona was, and she badly wanted to tell her how her surgery went, because Arizona was not a stranger, she was someone that was still special to her. And maybe she could break the tradition, even as just a friend, she'd be allowed to tell her how her day went. How good it felt knowing she was able to save a father of three kids because it was just Arizona. And it was about work, and nothing personal, surely not about them.
She stopped for a moment, contemplating if that was what she really wanted. To just have her go on and talk about her surgery, and to act that having Arizona in the way where they were now, was enough. She tried so hard to be the best version of herself, to play by the rules for once in her life, but maybe Mich was right.
Maybe the hearts want what it wants.
And her heart had never been wrong. Surely, she had made bad decisions out of impulse in the past, and mistakes from previous relationships that she wished she had taken back, but Amelia had always known where to pace herself when it came down to matters of the heart. She had always been sure when it came down to her feelings, and surely being invested in Arizona even after a damn decade had passed proved that.
So, she was happy with how her surgery went down, but that was not the only thing she wanted to say to the blonde. She would always be the same person who would want more.
Arizona was looking at her differently now, slightly intimidated by how she had been met by Amelia's silence. She should know she was only being silent as she was trying her best not to cry.
Because Amelia knew that whatever she was going to say to the blonde next wasn't exactly what she signed up for, but she figured it'd be best to be rejected once again than not be able to say her piece. Sure, Arizona already knew Amelia liked her back. But did she know just how much?
The corner of her lips curved into a sly smile, as she shook her head in embarrassment, "You're going to hate me for this—" she trailed off, as Arizona frowned, bracing the palms of both of her hands behind the corner of the desk for support. "I can't keep doing this. I thought I could… I'm sorry." Amelia dropped her arms on both sides, as her shoulders let loose in disbelief. She never meant to make it even more complicated for the both of them, yet here they were.
"You know that's not true." Arizona's voice softened, as she gently tugged on her wrists to pull her body closer to where she sat against the desk until Amelia's waist had been tucked safely in between Arizona's thighs. "I could never hate you."
"You will eventually. For what I'm about to say."
"Amelia, what is it?" She asked, looking back down at both of her wrists that she was probably unaware Arizona had been holding for quite some time. Amelia gently pried away from her grasp, but the blonde's tug had been firm, as she went on and drew circles around her skin. It was always the little things.
An uncomfortable silence fell between them once again, as Arizona brought her head up to look directly into her eyes. It felt like they had broken the barrier last night. They had never been one to be this close. To be this open and ever since she took Arizona home with her, they had never been the same.
It was a great shift in their relationship.
For being so used to barely getting anything out of her to getting all of her.
For wanting each other hard and for no longer being afraid to be upfront, and for being able to communicate what they tried to bury all these years.
Amelia felt tears pooling in her eyes because god - she finally got Arizona right where she wanted. It'd be foolish to not do anything about it when she finally had all the means to prove to her that she was worth it. That they were worth giving a chance for.
"I never wanted to be just your friend." She openly said, with quivered lips because it was the truth. It had only been barely a day since she promised she'd give their friendship a try, but she couldn't. It was like she was already setting herself up once again with rejection, and that was fine. It was better than pretending. Amelia had already been past that phase of her life, that was all she ever did last time. "You can't up and run and say something as wanting me and proposing to just be friends at the same time. That's not what I want from you." She reasoned, pressing her lips together as she watched Arizona's face fall. God, this was a mistake.
She heaved a sigh, combing the loose strands of hair falling from her face. She frustratingly tucked them on the back of her ear as she watched Arizona slowly get a realization of where their conversation was heading. "I just finished a six-hour surgery, and I'm beyond exhausted - but…" she let out a dry laugh, as tears began to fall from her cheeks. "I'm smiling so hard because I was able to save a life. I was able to save a father of three kids, and he's on the road to a full recovery, and he gets to see his family back home in a few days, and I find that amazing."
"It is." Arizona nodded in agreement, as she brought her hand up to wipe the tears from her cheeks, skimming her fingers ever so gently as Amelia leaned forward to her touch.
"Through every wins, I want you with me. Even when things are bad, I still want you. I want you here when I talk about how my day went and learn more about you, and what you are outside work. And- and, god you make me so angry because we've dragged this out for so long, for a decade and yet you want to be friends. It doesn't make sense to me." Her chest pricked for a moment, the remnants of her words coming at her at full force. It wasn't meant to be this complicated. "For three years since I moved here for good, I had you right where I wanted." It burned Amelia to finally have the guts to touch her back, how she mindlessly pulled the hand that Arizona had been using to wipe her cheeks, as she opened the back of the blonde's hand to press her lips on her palm. "I can't sit around and do nothing. I already did that for years and look where that got us. And just fuck it, I can't sit around and not do my best to have you."
It was off-key, uncharacteristic of her, to do all these things for one person. But Arizona was not just any person, she was special, and she'd be damned to simply go on with her life, when she was just within arms' reach, practically available with feelings that had been mutual for quite some time. Amelia paved her way to ignore every reason that went into her head, she took a deep breath as she squeezed her eyes momentarily, because, no - she definitely could not afford to look back at Arizona's eyes and see how she would react for what she was about to say next. "If it's still a no, I can take it, I'll be fine. I'm a grown-ass woman. I know what I was getting myself into." She explained, as she felt Arizona jerked ever slightly, a crease appeared on her forehead - with Amelia left hoping it was because she was against that idea. "But I want to know," she licked her lips, as her breathing evened out. "If being friends is still what you want?"
The ball was in her court now.
Amelia could feel her heart hammering against her chest. That unexplained moment when her anxiety would kick in, and all of a sudden she'd feel the constant pounding of her pulse from her wrists and on the back of her ears. She studied Arizona for a wee moment. Watched how she swallowed hard, and how she tilted her head to the side- the sight Amelia would often see her do when she was thinking about something really hard. Amelia sighed deeply, unable to restrain the disappointment because maybe she overstepped, and she was manipulating Arizona into doing things she never wanted, but Arizona was still holding on to her, as she still showed no signs of leaving - and if it helped, Arizona was pulling her even closer now, with softer eyes and parted lips.
Within a split second, Arizona was closing the distance between them, until their breaths mingled, until their bodies entwined with one another until she finally felt her soft, moist lips molding against hers. The kiss had been soft and brief, and incomparably different from last night. Arizona slowly pulled back, and Amelia unconsciously groaned at the sudden loss of contact. "I've been chasing after you the entire day, to say the same thing. I'm sorry, I thought having you is enough..." Arizona's voice faltered, running her fingertips across her face and it made Amelia want nothing else. "I want to be with you. I want to give this a try." She simply said, and Amelia felt like she won something grand, in the contentment of personally hearing it from Arizona, as she plastered the biggest smile on her face.
She pulled her flush towards her in one swift motion, as she brought her hand up to Arizona's jaw and her other free hand resting against Arizona's thigh. On their angle, and with Arizona still sitting against the desk, it seemed as if the blonde was almost two inches taller than her and so Amelia made a careful adjustment, as she peered her head up, with her gaze drifting upwards to reconnect their lips once again. "So yes?" Amelia inquired, followed by a small laugh that erupted from Arizona, which had been quickly tucked somewhere in her throat, as Amelia had already parted her mouth to swipe her tongue against the seam of the blonde's mouth begging for entrance. She was done waiting this time around.
Rather, they were done waiting this time around.
A million times yes.
-x-
It all happened too fast.
Maybe because they had been caught up in what they were both doing that Amelia had already forgotten how they ended up moving from the desk to the armrest of a nearby couch.
How she had managed to pull Arizona down, as she straddled her lap and involuntarily grounded down on the blonde's thighs. The action resulted in the both of them softly moaning against each other's lips. She could feel Arizona's heart hammering against her own, and Amelia was unsure how she absolutely could take any more of this. They both knew this was the farthest they could get, but that definitely did not stop them from holding back from each other.
With a soft click of their lips, Amelia pulled back from their kiss as she looked at the blonde once again, a proud grin etched on her face. It was inevitable.
She could never get tired of looking at her face, and something that she had learned for today was that it didn't take much to make Arizona a muddled mess, as she then swiped her hand behind the blonde's locks to have access to her neck.
Amelia leaned back down, running a trail of kisses from her chin, along her jawline until she reached the crook of her neck. She gently tugged on the collar of Arizona's scrub top, to lightly suck on her clavicle making Arizona whimper in response. "God, anyone can come in anytime, w-we should, we should…"
Amelia pulled back, a smirk tugging on the corner of her lips. "Stop?"
Arizona grunted, dissatisfied by her response, as she stood up on her feet to flip them around until she regained her control and dragged Amelia down, where they haphazardly fell back on the couch with Arizona now on top of her. "We should probably talk though…" the blonde proposed, kissing her with much force, with deft fingers finding their way underneath her scrub top, to draw circles around her pale skin.
Arizona was definitely one to talk .
Not when she had been quick enough to slide her hand upwards, from her hip up to her chest. She lifted her top a few inches up until she felt Arizona's hand had been replaced with her own lips, peppering kisses everywhere. Amelia involuntarily arched her back, as she jerked her leg on the inside of the blonde's thigh that she slipped in between her own legs.
Her touch immediately sent shivers down her spine, as Amelia had only done nothing but uncontrollably let out a moan in response. "We've done nothing but talk, screw that." Amelia flipped them over on the small cramped couch, losing her patience as her kisses had turned persistent, and just god, the nerve for Arizona to pull back.
"Wait." She managed to say, almost out of breath as she enclosed her hands around Amelia's wrists, stopping her. Arizona was definitely right for calling out, but there was no way Amelia was going to say that out loud, not in the middle of a make-out, when she was hot and bothered, and when she was feeling everything all at once.
It surely was amusing to see the blonde with bruised lips and dark eyes though, and it was a sight she didn't mind seeing every day. Her frustration dissipated as a smile broke into her face. Things were different now between them, Arizona was hers. At least, that was the obvious direction of where they were heading. Arizona smiled, as she leaned in to place a quick peck on her wrist. "If we're going to do this, then we're going to have to do this right— I want you to pick out a nice dress, take you out on a date, kiss you whenever and wherever sort of thing."
Amelia let out a laugh, as Arizona's eyes widened in surprise, letting loose of the grip she had on her wrists, as she placed a hand on both sides of her thighs, keeping her steady. Amelia hooked her legs around her waist. "You think that's funny?" The blonde asked, looking offended, as Amelia drew her head back.
It wasn't.
Nothing about what she said was funny.
She found it adorable and cute, and so Arizona. And she wanted nothing but that, and she was trying hard to cover the effect that Arizona had on her by laughing hard. She had it so bad for her, and now that she had her, she couldn't even begin to say the words out loud. Afraid of jinxing it which was foolish, because Amelia had never been one to believe in any of those.
"No, I just —" she stopped, with chest heaving and glimmering eyes, she tentatively skimmed her fingers across Arizona's face, taking in her features and how her body would respond to her touches, and Amelia felt so drawn to that. "I think it's amazing."
A sly smile tugged at the corner of her lips, as Arizona pushed her body upwards, cradling the back of Amelia's head for another long, and slow, languid kiss.
Amelia could definitely get used to this.
-x-
Amelia was happy, like over the moon happy and it was that kind of happiness that she wouldn't plaster around because it was un- Amelia but she loved it.
Loved every bit of it.
Loved the simple fact that she and Arizona are finally on the same page. Things had changed for the better, and they both are doing the best of their abilities to make them work. They were some sort of thing , she couldn't seem to label what they were, but they both agreed they would be taking things slow, and like everyone else - they'd start off with a date.
She hadn't been this excited outside work for as long as she could remember. And Arizona was a breath of fresh air, and she enjoyed the fact that Amelia now has something to look forward to beyond fixing tumors or teaching interns.
She loved that she belonged to Arizona. Loved that they both agreed to give them a try, loved that Arizona had not been shy by pulling her into the nearest vacant room closet to steal a kiss with every chance she got. To interlocked fingers as they walk through the parking lot, and exchanged glances across the cafeteria because they figured it'd be best to keep whatever they had going to themselves first.
This also explained the reason why she was now heavily panting against the door of the supply room closet, as Arizona trapped her in between her thighs. Nothing but the sound of uneven breaths and occasionally shared moans, and persistent rattling off the door because Arizona definitely knew her way with her.
The blonde's hands pulled away from the door, as she reached down to run her fingertips across her shirt, with her mouth caught in Arizona's bottom lip, nipping it gently. Arizona elicited a needy whimper, as she pressed her thigh in between her legs, the sensation almost burned her, the urge to do more, with her head falling harder back against the wood with a loud thud.
"I can't wait for our date." Arizona grinned while pulling away. She stepped forward, bringing her hand up to fix Amelia's top that she had rumpled in her hands not a few minutes ago.
Amelia playfully rolled her eyes, because Arizona had been so keen on stopping right when things had started to get heated between them, and Arizona's reasoning had been valid — the whole taking it slow, their date, but Amelia found herself scoffing at that when they already had done more for the past three days. "Don't you have surgery after this?" Amelia asked.
"I do." Arizona nodded, briefly looking down at her watch to check the time. "You're going to be there, right?"
Amelia found herself smiling, reaching out to pull her body closer to hers. She kissed the side of her head, inhaling her scent.
She loved that they had no boundaries now, and loved that she got to call Arizona unspokenly hers. "Of course," she remarked, veering her head to the side to give Arizona one last kiss on the lips.
-x-
Amelia felt like she had all the time in the world, watching while Arizona was in complete surgeon mode at the observation gallery.
Amelia smiled, as she waved back down at her.
Amelia fought hard to be discreet. It sure did feel like they were a bunch of teenagers failing to gush over the other. Arizona was wearing her surgical mask, but it was clear as day that the blonde was also grinning back at her.
Everything had seemed so relatively easy for them. Which was a first.
She was so used to fighting tooth and nail for the things that she wanted. So used to losing everything, to have a bit of something that she could call hers . But Arizona was there, literally just a floor below her. And had been with her briefly in the supply room closet, who had kissed her senseless, just to proclaim how excited she was of a well-awaited date tonight.
It took more than a decade to get them where they were, and god, was Amelia glad that they took the time.
The surgery was a success, and Arizona had finally stepped out of the operating table as she assigned Jo to close up. The scrub nurses were now helping her pull out the equipment she used, and while doing so, Amelia caught the blonde looking back up at her to give her a wink.
Amelia rolled her eyes, but was deeply amused. Before she could even poke at that even further, a woman from behind cleared her throat pulling her out of her thoughts.
Andi. Amelia jerked her head in genuine shock, hoping that Andi had not seen the interaction she just had with Arizona, but it all seemed as if it was too late for that.
"Dr. Martinez."
"Dr. Shepherd." She greeted back, and look, Amelia's first instinct was to apologize. She had briefly remembered their encounter on the very first night April tasked her to drive Arizona home. How she meddled in between when it was obvious that Andi was into the blonde. And sure from the get-go, Anelia had already been jealous, but during that time, she was also just trying to look after Arizona who was drunk then.
So, she contemplated if an apology would suffice. Not when she didn't need it.
But, fuck it. Amelia was just so damn happy. It would mean a lot if she would at least say it and than just completely disregard what happened that night.
Just as she was about to shift her direction to where she was sitting from behind, Andi had been the one who initiated the move, as she took a seat just right beside her. Amelia briefly looked back down and noticed that the blonde had already left, probably scrubbing out already. The observation gallery had been pretty much open, and vacant yet she felt as if it was cramped, as Andi sat dangerously close.
It all seemed as if Andi overstepped into her personal space, and she somehow had gotten the idea that she may eventually start assuming the worst.
"It's a surprise that you and Dr. Robbins are working along just fine."
Amelia's jaw clenched, instinctively whipping her head around to where she sat, smiling hard that it made her teeth hurt. "What do you mean?" But in reality, she meant to say that she and Arizona were no longer any of her fucking business.
But new Amelia was smiley, new Amelia was happy, and patient - but good god, did Andi annoy her.
"I mean, I've already figured you were into her. Everytime I make a move, you always come running after her —" She shrugged, and maybe new Amelia could definitely use a break, as her smile immediately broke into a scowl.
" Please , that was only one time."
" Once?" Andi's eyebrows shot up, and it was pretty much evident that she was mocking her now. "Right. You probably don't even remember the first time —"
Pretty sure Amelia was not one to forget. And it was pretty much insulting that Andi would even say that right in front of a damned neurosurgeon. Andi was tactless and had a punchable look on her face, surely she wouldn't forget anything that involve her and Ariz—
Right.
Except for those three nights.
Those three nights that she couldn't recall.
That involved Arizona.
Andi wasn't referring to that, did she?
To be continued.
