Synopsis: N/A

It's strange, the silence that comes after the scream, within the
space of a breath the sounds of his entire world cease to be
heard...just the thudding of a heart whose speed has been increased
by fear and the incoherently whispered words full of meaning and
unkeepable promises.

Blood turns from red to black as it pulses from between fingers too
weak to hold its flow, between the fingers of a man to whom letting
go is an alien prospect.

His self assurance gone, his whole world, both real and imagined – fading before his eyes in a pool of red-black.

Impending danger goes unnoticed, nothing matters now but the woman in
his arms, even as she looks at him using all her strength to tell him
with her eyes that she loves him; that she has always loved him.

Danger makes its move and he has neither the time nor inclination to
draw his weapon, his attention, his entire reason for being lies
bleeding in his arms, beyond that, nothing else matters.

A single gunshot echoes off white tile and green linoleum and only the absence of the searing pain he should have expected, causes him to look up.

"She's bleeding Alex, it's...I...I can't stop it."

"Paramedics are about 2 minutes away Bobby, just keep pressure on the
wound."

The last part of her strength fading as she touches his face and
whispers his name "Bobby, my Bobby, such a good boy, so caring..."
Eyes too often clouded by illness, clear and she smiles, "I always
loved you, always...so proud of you."

He begs her not to speak, to save her strength.

He is seeing the end, he knows, but cannot accept - he knows losing her could push him into the void from which he may never return.

"There is peace in this for me Bobby, for us both."

The whispered confession of this small, fragile woman cuts him to the
bone. Suddenly, no longer the hardened detective; he is simply Bobby
Goren, about to lose his mother, not for the first, but certainly for
the last time.

"Mom...please..."

Then, without a sound, she was gone and she took his world with her.
