Chapter 3

My shift was supposed to end in four minutes, but I had a hunch about Earl Turner, the last known terrorist still on the loose. It was just a hunch, I knew I could be wrong, but Bill backed me up as I presented my theory to captain Mackey.

.

Joe: Before his first arrest Earl Turner raped three women over four months.

Mackey: Right, other racists used this as cover, made sure they each had alibies for at least one rape. So why is he raping a new one every night? Makes me believe that Turner and this new rapist are two different people.

Joe: With all due respect, I disagree. I think Turner knows he's going back to prison, for life, or he'll be killed. Either way he's indulging while he can.

Mackey: Interesting theory, does it help us find him?

Bill: Turner's also a tobacco addict, and he likes illegal boxing matches. Are there any smokeasies that are known to feature these matches?

Mackey: Just one. We have probable cause that they're having matches this afternoon. The local gang leaders are rewarding their foot soldiers, and using them to entice new recruits. Vice Squad are raiding the place this afternoon.

Bill: Who are the matches between?

Mackey: An Anne Bonny and a Mary Read are settling some dispute in the ring. There's also a rumor that the owner is tricking some recent Maldivian refugees into fighting here. They don't know the laws, they don't speak much english, and they're desperate.

Joe: Earl Turner is a racist, seeing Madivians fighting like animals is right up his alley.

Mackey: You have a good theory, and it would fit into what intel we have. I'll tell Vice to keep their eyes open.

Joe: Due respect, but Earl Turner is desperate, he might have found a gun, even a bomb. I know it would be difficult, but not impossible for him to obtain.

Mackey: What do you two suggest?

Bill: Let us go in first, see if Turner is a spectator, and if he has a weapon.

Mackey: On one condition, you two should get some rest first. Can't have my best officers passing out during a raid. Be ready by 11, and get at least two hours sleep, each.
