"The very first week I knew you I wrote myself your vassal; but burnt the Letter as the very next time I saw you I thought you manifested some dislike to me."

John Keats to Fanny Brawne

Miles

Brooke Davis is a dangerous memory for Lucas. There isn't a time or a place where he hasn't though about her—

Her laughter, her smile, the spark in her eye when she's determined to win an argument...

He should be concentrating on his new start with Keith, not many people get that second chance to start over. But as Tree Hill starts to disappear for his view in the mirror, he can't help but like he's running away. He knows he's running away.

From Dan. From his mom. From Nathan and Haley and their happiness. From Peyton.

From Brooke.

He can never forget the taste of her lips. Or the way she whispered his name, soft and warm, creating a feeling in him that he never knew he could have. He revealed in the fact that Brooke need him the way she did—

No one had ever needed him like that.

But he's lost her now.

He's lost her to his own stupidity.

All because he wanted something that he couldn't, shouldn't have.

Peyton. Kissing Peyton was never like kissing Brooke. Kissing Peyton made him feel like a giddy teenager— the kind of teenager he swore up and down he'd never be.

He read Of Mice and Men and Walt Whitman was his favorite poet. He brooded over being Dan Scott's forgotten son and the baggage that came with being a Scott. He wasn't supposed to break Brooke's heart because Peyton finally decided he could have her.

He misses Brooke already.

He wonders if she's found his note and if she's shaking her head at his excuses. She could always read beyond his walls— something Peyton could not do and something Brooke was good at. The shadows in her eyes are testimony to that.

He sighs. He wonders what his mom is doing, if she's sitting on his bed and crying. He wonders if Nathan and Haley are happy. He does wish them well.

He knows Peyton's alright, she's a survivor like him. The kind of girl he always thought was his...

But not even twenty miles away from Tree Hill and he's missing Brooke, not Peyton. Because Brooke is his girl, his surprise, and he misses her.

A/N: First One Tree Hill drabble/short fic. I've been dying to do one, probably the only reason I'm still an author on I'm going to start writing a longer one soon hopefully. Anyhow, feedback is always appreciated. Thanks!
