"Come now, Alice. Don't knock it till you've tried it." Seth encouraged. What was he even talking about? He slid one finger under her chin, tilting her face towards his with an enticing smile. "Don't worry. If you spend some time with me, I'll make sure it's the best date you've ever had. Trust me." Seth whispered, way too close for Iris' comfort.
THIRD POV
There was an unexpected and uncomfortable sort of sensuality in his gaze, seemingly driving all coherent thought from Iris' mind. As she stared into his eyes, discomfort etched across her delicate expression, Seth only seemed to inch closer. "That's enough, Seth," came Sirius' voice, cold and commanding as he grabbed Seth's collar, hauling him away from Iris.
Sirius wore a stern look on his face as he gave Seth an almost unnoticeable glare. Yet it felt as though there was something… more to his sudden reaction. Iris chose to ignore it, though, choosing to believe that he'd merely noticed how uncomfortable she'd gotten. "I told you to take her shopping, not make a pass at her." Seth's eyes widened in surprise underneath the older man's harsh gaze, "C'mon, Mr. Grumpy Face! I was doing no such thing!" he argued, "I just didn't want to pass up the chance to go out with Alice! I had to make sure she wanted it, too."
Iris tensed. Was that really all he was doing? The pounding in her chest and the nausea in her throat said otherwise. But who was she to assume? She took a deep breath, lightly clutching at her sleeves, running her finger along the fabric. Sirius let out a sigh, his expression falling to be more neutral, "I hope that's all it was. So don't try anything with her, got it?" An amused smile formed on Seth's lips, "Not a chance! Really, Sirius, you're like an overprotective dad!"
Iris shuddered, a light laughter attempting to escape her lips. But despite catching herself, it clearly hadn't gone unnoticed. "Iris, you were about to laugh, weren't you?" Sirius accused, turning his gaze on the white-haired girl. "I think you're imagining things…" she replied, a light smile on her lips. "I don't think so."
Iris raised an eyebrow at Sirius as he reached out, gently pushing one of his long fingers against her forehead. She blinked up at the older man as he suddenly grinned at her. "I have a new job for you to do-" he began, "be nicer to me. The end." Iris stifled another giggle as she crossed her arms across her chest, "Alrighty, boss." she replied, a teasing tone to her voice. As they met gazes, the dam of composure shattered and both burst out into laughter.
"Hang on! What's this about?" Seth questioned, bewilderment clear in his brown gaze. A sullen look seemed to pass over his features as he took a step between Iris and Sirius. "Sirius, you just told me not to make a pass at her, and now you're flirting with her?! It's not fair!" he pouted. Iris froze. Did he just say flirting? No way- There was no way someone like Sirius would even consider flirting with someone like Iris- Right?
Iris' smile dropped, her nerves settling in, "Seth, you're reading it wrong-" she tried to speak, only to get interrupted- "Oh, it's fair," said Sirius, "Because I'm allowed to." Iris paused. Did he mean-? "I'm her guardian." Sirius smiled, reaching out and gently settling his hand atop Iris' head. Her guardian.. For whatever reason, Iris didn't feel any relief at those words. She felt… a strange, dulled ache in her chest. What did that even mean?
"Anyway, Iris. Do you want to go out tomorrow?" Sirius asked. "That's right!" Seth interjected, "get back to the subject! Let's go out tomorrow, Alice." "I bet Seth knows lots of stores you'd like," Sirius added, seeming as if he was trying to encourage Iris into saying yes, "You should go sightseeing around Cradle, since you've wandered your own into our world and all." Iris took a moment to think, a part of her wanted to say no. She didn't feel comfortable with Seth, she didn't know him that well to even consider feeling comfortable. But she didn't want to disappoint anyone, or make them upset.
She let out a sigh, "Well, in that case- I'll accept your offer, Seth." she answered, giving a light smile. Quietly reassuring herself that if Seth tried anything, they'd be in public. Only an idiot would try something out in public and in broad daylight. Seth's smile brightened, "Yaaay! I can't wait. We'll go shopping together, and I'm going to coordinate your outfit from head to toe." Seth continued on with his excited ramblings, but Iris sort of tuned him out.
Why did she say yes? Why did she have to be such a people pleaser? What if something went wrong? What if something bad happened? What if- No, she had to calm down. She couldn't let her emotions get the best of her. That's right, just emotions. She was always overly emotional. Because that's how women are, right…? Of course. She could look at this as an opportunity. She'd get to see around Cradle and it would be a once in a lifetime chance to go shopping in literal Wonderland.
Her heart rate slowed to a rhythmic beat. A part of her slowly warming up to the idea, light pools of excitement and euphoria bubbling in her chest as the prospect. But there was still that glass of frustration, ready to tip over at a moment's notice. Frustration at how deftly and smoothly Sirius kept her from fulfilling the promise she'd made to the Black Army on the day they agreed to take her in.
Sirius was a kind man, she knew that. But she also knew that he was clever in the worst way possible. Here she was, trying to help in any way she could. But instead, he was just finding more and more ways to spoil her as if she were a child. There had to be some way she could give back to Sirius and the others, something she could do to repay their kindness, right?
The next day had dawned bright and clear, beautiful and perfect weather for going out and having a fun time. The street was decorated with a multitude of shops that seemed as busy as London itself. Central Quarter was located right in the dead center of Cradle between Red and Black, the markets filled with numerous amounts of people. The stalls that lined the streets were packed full with all sorts of things, some Iris had never even seen before.
"Here we go, Alice! Let's start off going down this side." said Seth, a bright grin on his face. "Okay." she smiled. Iris wanted to feel excited, wanted to give herself over to whatever ounces of excitement she could feel. But she couldn't. She couldn't because of the doubt that had been plaguing her for days. She wanted to have fun, but it didn't feel right. It didn't feel right to just relax and let loose like this. Not with all that was going on in Cradle. "Alice, stop looking so worried." "What?" Iris looked over at Seth, slightly surprised. Was it that obvious?
"Why don't we stop and chat for a bit?" Seth suggested, a warm smile on his lips. Seth took Iris by the hand, leading her over to sit down on a bench that sat on the side of the road. "As you well know, in 5 days' time we'll be going to war with the Red Army," Seth started, "The Black Army has no intention of letting the Red Army subjugate us. The Central Quarter here is situated right between Red and Black Territory. Once the fighting starts, I have no doubt that this, too, will become a war zone."
Iris froze, why was Seth telling her this? Why did he think telling her such things would make her feel better? Knowing that even this carefree yet busy marketplace they stood now would become a war zone? "Everything seems so… peaceful right now. It's almost hard to believe." she muttered, staring down at her lap. "That's what war is-" Seth continued, the usual light, carefree and cheerful tone dissipating from his voice, "something so awful that it seems impossible to believe in it, until it happens."
His words were bland, almost entirely lacking in passion, yet they settled atop Iris' shoulders like a heavy weight that she just couldn't shake. "This normal, everyday world will be ruthlessly thrown into chaos. It's a truly terrifying thing. But that's all the more reason to be here now." Seth reached out, gently cupping Iris' face with his hands and turning her face to look at him. Up close, his soft smile almost seemed dazzling. But the lack of space between them made Iris uncomfortable.
"I want you to know about all the wonderful, amazing places that exist in Cradle, and now is the time to show you." His words were sweet, yet even that didn't make Iris feel any better. But the most she could do in return was act as if she did feel better. "And I think that's why Sirius urged you to come out with me today. I think he feels the same way. So just for today, do you think you can put your worries aside, and spend the day smiling with me?"
"I-" Iris stopped. She knew that deep down, she couldn't. She couldn't do as he wanted. But she couldn't say that to him. No, she couldn't. Absolutely not. But she could pretend. She was always good at pretending. "Seth- I.. I can do just that." she attempted to smile, but to her, it felt off. But it was clearly believable enough for Seth. "That's what I like to hear! Now let's buy something sweet to fuel us while we're exploring!" "Okay."
The pair stood up from the bench and stepped out into the crowded streets once more. For Seth, and for Sirius- today, Iris wanted to accept the gift that they'd given her. Even if it was wasted on someone like her, Iris was grateful. And so, she would do as they asked and enjoy herself as much as possible.
Iris and Seth walked around town, seeing the many sights and visiting all sorts of stores. And over time, Iris began to feel happy. The same happiness she always felt in Cradle, but she knew it couldn't last. Not when she had to go back to London. After all, who knows what'll happen then? But then, something happened as they began to head back towards Black Territory. Iris caught the sight of something off on a side street, and it caused her to freeze. "Alice? What's the matter?" Seth questioned.
"..What's this poster for?" she asked. Seth took one look at the page hanging on a wall and shrugged, "He's a wanted man. It's just a reminder to be wary of him." The poster had a familiar image printed onto it, with the words: "Beware of Harr Silver, the Masked Wizard" written in bold ink. As Iris stared at the posters and the words written on it, she could remember him clearly, that glinted crimson that had glowed in the dim corridor light. "This evil wizard was exiled from Cradle, but even now he continues plotting to overthrow our nation. Neither Black nor Red will have him. He is also known as the Joker." said further down on the poster.
There was no doubt in Iris' mind, this was definitely the man she'd seen just the other night. "..This guy here-" she muttered, emotions wavering in her tone. Seth's eyes widened slightly, "Yes?" The confusion in his eyes stopped her from continuing.
"Are you Alice?"
"Don't scream. Not if you want to sleep safely tonight, that is."
"Who was he?" "Just… an old friend."
"Um.. It's nothing, forget it. I guess a part of me hadn't realized Cradle had outlaws, too." Iris spoke, trying to laugh off the uneasy atmosphere that had settled around them. Seth nodded, "It certainly is a bit unsettling! But don't you worry one little bit." he smiled, "I may look pretty, but I can definitely pack a punch!" Iris wore a small yet gentle smile, "I know that. You've never lost a single round of arm-wrestling, no?" She tried to keep her smile looking natural, but her thoughts were whirling, heavy with doubt.
She couldn't say that she'd seen Harr at the Black Army's headquarters. And she definitely couldn't say that he and Sirius were friends. There was certainly more going on here than she knew about, but it would be better if she remained quiet. "Alice? You look worried," Seth commented, "Does the thought of him scare you that much?" Iris froze, "Um, no. I'm fine, really. I was just thinking- that's all." Iris knew that she couldn't come up with any answers on her own, so all she could do was push it out of her mind for the time being.
Worrying about it would be a waste. Especially when she was told to enjoy the day. But suddenly, an idea popped into mind- "Seth, before we head home, can we take one more look around the shops? I'd like to buy something for everyone to take back with us." said Iris. "Oh, Alice, you- you-" he paused, taking a deep breath, "You're the sweetest girl in all the world! Do you mind if I hug you?!" "..You're already hugging me. Can you let go..?" "Whoops, I'm so sorry. I was just so overcome with emotion."
Iris felt better as they returned to the mainstreet.
"I can't decide." Iris frowned, letting out a noise of frustration. "You're overthinking this, Alice! Anyway, the old man doesn't need a present. If anything, just get him some candies like everyone else." said Seth. Iris narrowed her eyes at him and shook her head, "No, that's not good enough." It had been easy to choose something for everyone else. But she just couldn't decide on what to get Sirius. Sirius didn't seem like a big fan of sweets, so she wanted to get him something else. But, she had no idea what he liked.
Seth and Iris had left the Central Quarter and crossed the Black Bridge already. She had looked at every stall and shop they'd passed, but nothing had seemed right. The shops were far and few between in Black Territory, and a part of her was starting to worry that she'd never find anything. It shouldn't even be this hard, but Sirius had done so much more for her than anyone. She wanted to make him smile. "Look, look! I found the perfect shop." "What? Where?" Seth pointed at a small store that stood on the side of the road, seemingly filled with bright and blooming flowers. Its appearance looked as if it were held up by vines and leaves rather than bricks and mortar.
It was a flower shop, with the sign reading the name "Canis Major". "Helloooo. Anyone here?" Seth called out. "Yes! Come in, come in!" A cheerful voice rang out, and a moment later a sophisticated dressed woman appeared from inside. Cut flowers were nice and all, but Sirius seemed to enjoy growing them himself. "Do you sell seeds as well?" Iris asked. "Yes, of course! Please, come this way." the woman answered. She led them to a corner of the store where tiny bags were lined up on display, each with a different name written on it.
"There are so many to pick from.." Iris muttered. The woman picked up a bag labeled 'Milkweed' and held it out to Iris, "This one is quite popular. It's a lovely addition to any flowerbed so I always recommend it." Iris smiled, "Then I'll take it." 'Thank you!" The woman smiled brightly as she moved to carefully wrap the seeds and placed them in a bag for Iris. The woman was quite pretty, perhaps this is what they meant when they talk about 'a classic beauty.' "Wow! I'm surprised a lady like her isn't off modeling somewhere instead of cooped up in this shop." Seth commented. "Mhmm.. Not that working in a flower shop is so bad, but she's really beautiful. Makes me feel like I'm plain, haha."
"Ah! Nonsense! She can't hold a candle to you, Alice! You're much prettier." Seth blurted out. Right after that moment, the shop assistant came back. "Sorry to keep you waiting." she spoke. "Not at all. Thank you very much!" As they headed back towards headquarters, Iris' heart felt light and happy. But then she realized something. "Huh.. Everyone else's gift is from the Central Quarter.. All except for Sirius'.." she muttered. "Don't be silly- that doesn't matter. I'm sure Papa Sirius will love it." Seth reassured. Well, Iris could certainly hope.
That evening, after dinner, Iris cut up the pound cake she'd purchased and served it to everyone for dessert. "You didn't need to buy us anything special, but thanks!" Ray smiled. "Thank you, Iris! This is soooo good!" Seth stared at Ray and Fenrir in surprise, "Really, you two! Slow down and actually savor it, will you?" "It's delicious. It has the perfect balance of nuts and dried fruit." Luka commented. "I'm glad you like it." Iris smiled.
Once Iris had made sure everyone had a slice of cake, she moved over to where Sirius had settled on the sofa with a cup of tea in his hand. Iris took a deep breath and held out the bag to Sirius, "Sirius, this is for you." "Hmm?" Sirius took the bag from Iris' hands, but she only felt her nerves rise. His eyes widened slightly as he got a good look at the bag, "This wrapping paper-" "What about it?" Sirius' gaze narrowed slightly, "Did you go to the flower shop here in Black Territory?" She figured that it would make sense that he knew of it, yet she had no idea what to make of Sirius' reaction.
Sirius' face looked oddly grim as he stared at her. Has Iris done something wrong? "Did you talk to anyone at this shop?" Sirius asked.
