When Emily wakes to the pitter-patter of rain hitting the roof, her heart sinks. It's a Wednesday. And on a Wednesday, Alex visits the two sisters at precisely midday. Every single Wednesday. That is, unless it's raining. When it rains, Emily is left to bundle into a warm dressing gown and stare out the window longingly, with only Haley's merciless teasing for company.
"You know he just stays at his place, right? You could go visit him," Haley teases. "He's probably in his bedroom. Probably working out… Maybe you could offer to spot him."
Emily tears her gaze from the window to frown at her sister. "Don't be ridiculous."
"Then don't look so pathetic." Haley shrugged, her blonde ringlets bouncing with her shoulders. "You can't look like that and expect me not to say anything."
"I don't look—"
"You look like a lost puppy, waiting for his master to come home." Haley hummed, tapping her nails against the kitchen table. Then, pointedly, she added, "And what's worse is that you're the puppy who knows that his master isn't coming. Not today. But still, you sit at the door and wait."
"I'm not a dog, Haley."
Haley rolls her eyes. "I know that. But you do play the part awfully well. Don't you think you'd waggle your tail if Alex did suddenly decide to drop by?"
"That's disgusting."
"I don't hear you denying it."
Emily throws a pillow in her sister's direction, only slightly disappointed when it falls just short of her target. "Because I'm not a dog. And I'm not waiting for Alex. I'm just looking out the window. Is that such a crime?"
"You're looking forlornly out the window. That's an entirely different thing."
"Gosh. Forlornly. That's a big word for you, Hales."
But Haley only laughs. "Well, if you're resorting to being so mean about it, I must be right."
It's enough vindication for Haley to move on from the conversation, shifting from Emily's not-so-secret crush to the intel that she's managed to gather on Pelican Town's newest resident—a boy from the city who, according to Haley, is very pleasant to look at. Emily listens half-heartedly, pitching in with hm and huh whenever her older sister pauses for breath. But the majority of her attention remains with the window...just in case a certain boy does, despite the odds, decide to visit.
