Can I just say really quickly how I didn't think this was going to even get some views, not over a hundred from just two chapters. Thank you so much to the new followers and my first review haruhishibuya. Hope I don't disappoint y'all. Now onto today's chapter.
Chapter 3-
Ever since my first visit to Lorenzo, or Lenzo as I've decided to call him, I've been working my butt off trying to get better at my magic. Every day I worked on things that seem mundane but really would be helpful. Lock picking, disarming alarms, better levitation. I kept trying until I could do each of them better and quickly. After two weeks I was satisfied with where I was. I had at least enough skill to break in and get out.
Besides me trying to break out a vampire who would be in love with one of my future friends, not much else had happened. Over the two weeks I became closer to Charlie's Angels and their two Bosleys. I had even met a cute 6-year-old Jeremy who had a passion for art already. I would see him at recess playing with chalk, making big pictures with great skill for a kid. He was making one right now, a big springtime garden, when Elena came to sit beside us.
"Hey, Mav. You want to come to my sleepover tonight?" She asked so innocently. I couldn't stop the rush of ice through my veins, but I kept my face normal.
"Sorry El bell. I gotta watch Windy for a few hours." I gave her a crooked smile to sell it.
She huffed. "That sucks. I wish you were. It's like I only get to see you in school." I smiled sadly even though I didn't feel that way at all. Grayson and Miranda creeped me out with their 'extracurricular activities'.
"Yeah, it does. I'll try to make another if I can."
"Ok." She sighed sadly before getting up and going back to play with the other angels. I looked back at Jeremy who was just staring at me.
"What?"
He titled his head. "Are you not coming because I'll be there?"
"No Jerry bean. I have a baby sister who's much younger than you and needs to be watched while my mother works tonight." And by work, I mean get drunk at the only bar in town.
"Ok. Is she as pretty as you?"
A smile fought its way on my face. "Maybe prettier because she's still a baby." He smiled and went back to his drawing, finishing up his garden right as recess ended.
School passed by so slowly but by time it was done I was home, by my own magic and not drunk driving, and busied myself with chores. Cleaning dishes, feeding Windy and giving her a bath, throwing away empty liquor bottles. I was lucky that Windy was so low maintenance and didn't cry often. She just slept soundly in my room and entertained herself with her mobile which played a soft tune.
Night fell fast and I was ready to take total advantage of the dark. I was dressed black head to toe with some new sneakers that barely made noise. My hands were covered in some tight thin gloves so I wouldn't risk leaving my fingerprints. I had wrapped my hair up and stuffed it in my hood to keep the black kinks from giving me away. That would be a narrowed down search real fast considering there were only like 5 other people with my hair texture.
After waiting until my clock read 3 am and my mother was safely back in the house, sprawled out on the couch, I finally was able to leave.
Finding Grayson's private practice wasn't hard considering I went looking for it a few days prior. It was the most inconspicuous doctor's office I had ever seen but that's because I was from a city and hospitals where I lived screamed sterile white walls and silence.
I used my magic to feel out the place from the outside, catching not of two different alarms and the locked doors. Trying to disable the was more of putting an interruption in their workings to make it momentarily confused. I didn't have enough magic control to disable them both, so I bought myself ten minutes at most. I quickly undid the locks and walked in, making sure the door was closed behind me lest somebody got too curious.
Again, I sent out more magic this time to connect to something alive and not powered. Enzo. It was different trying to find him than to sense something. More accurate, more intimate. When I did connect, I could feel the rise and fall of his heart, the flow of blood through his veins, the very essence of him. It was all leading me to a trap through and through it, Enzo.
He was strapped down with so many things sticking out of him, taking from him and monitors beeping to make sure he was alive. This was sickening. Disgusting. I was seeing firsthand the torture they only showed bits of when I thought thai was a show. This was real life now. What was happening to Enzo was real. He looked so tired and knocked out cold. That was good, I could work with a weak vampire.
I looked at the machines and had to think carefully about what I wanted them to do.
Shut down. Turn off. Stop working. I kept thinking but nothing was really happening. I was starting to panic. I knew I only had minutes left before those alarms started working again and only so much magic to get me and Enzo to safety.
Stop working, NOW! The machines skipped and stuttered before giving out and powering down. I could feel the drain starting to come on, but I still had enough in my reserves to do something. I pulled out the needles and tubes sticking in him, maybe a bit roughly too since I was going fast.
"Lenzo." I shook him. "Lenzo come on."
He slowly opened his tired eyes and looked at me. "Child?"
I smiled hopefully. "Hey Lenzo."
"I didn't think you would actually succeed." He said with disbelief.
"Well, when motivated enough and thoroughly disgusted with monsters you'd be surprised what I can do. Now tell me, just how weak are you."
"Very. And hungry." His eyes flashed and veins showed before going away. "I would suggest you get away from me." I stepped back cautiously. I may want to save him but save and be a chew toy were two different things.
"You have enough strength to get out of those." I nodded to the metal and leather straps over his chest, legs and arms. He shook his head. "Fine. Guess I really do have to do everything."
I took a deep breath and focused on the metal binding, imagining that I had phantom hands to rip them off completely. I was so tired when I was on the last one but urged myself to keep going.
I need to save him. I need to get him out. With one final wave of magic, I finally had him freed.
"Gods." I panted. "That was a lot." I, ignoring his earlier warning about being hungry, wrapped my eight-year-old arms around his waist and put the last of my magic into strengthening my body so I could hold him up and run. "I'm going to drop you off in the woods. Don't go back in town no matter what. Feed on the animals then come to my house at first light. You should be able to smell it." Not sure if he heard me with how out of it, he was I began to run.
Faster than normal I was burning out fast but that was most likely from magic exhaustion and using more to hold up a man twice, maybe three times, my own weight. I did as promised and kinda threw him into the woods before making my way home. I barely made it through the door before collapsing on the other side of our door.
I did it. I saved Enzo from two plus years more of torture and changed something from this realm.
I really need to work on my magic strengthening.
Lords and Ladies, this eight-year-old Maverick has skills. I couldn't imagine doing what she did, and I wrote it. I can't wait until the next chapter to see her in more domestic settings and do something she's always wanted to. I can't give too much away but if you can guess, great.
Until next time- BigSmallWonder
