Title: I Don't Wanna Close My Eyes

Summary: Elrond's thoughts the night before Celebrian sailed

Disclaimer: I do not own the characters. It is a shame really I would love the elf lord.

A/N: This fic has been bugging me for awhile now, and it only took 30 minutes to write so here it is. Any reviews will be welcome, any flames will be funny and amusing.

Elrond Peredhil sat up in the bed. His wife of many millenia lay down, sleep finally taking her when the tears were over. She had suffered far too much at the hands of the orcs, and though he had worked diligently, her pain was to deep. She would sail tomorrow for the Undying Lands, hopefully to heal the pains which he could not. For now he wished only to gaze upon her beauty for awhile.

Elrond wished nothing more than to curl up beside his wife, and hold her for all eternity. The truth was she would be gone come dawn, gone until someday he could follow.

Elrond paced the floor once more. His whole heart felt wrenched from his body, as he saw her eyelids flutter. She was obviously lost in the throughts of another dream, and he crawled upon the bed too hold her close. He could feel her heartbeat, he could smell her scent of jasmine and rose. He tried to capture this one moment of bliss for it would be the last one he had.

Celebrian stirred in her sleep, and a small smile flittered across her face. It was a rare smile, but Elrond remembered it even years later. It was the same smile he had seen the day they had met. Elrond was tired, all he wanted was sleep, but he could not bring himself to let his gaze fall from his wife. This was the bearer of his children, the woman he loved. No dream could compare to the sight of her.

Celebrian turned over and snuggled closer to Elrond, and he enveloped her within his arms. This was how life was supposed to be. How would he live without her beautiful smile as he opened his eyes each morning. How would he remember her voice, which was as gentle as the whisper of the wind on a summer day? All these things sent the tears he had hidden earlier, to come full force sliding out of his silver eyes. His whole body was racked with the despair that he was losing one of the most precious things in his life.

With a choked sob he leaned down and placed a kiss upon her face. His sorrow he felt could not be quenched, and he was startled when she opened her eyes to look at him.

"Why do you cry for me? We shall meet again one day soon."

"I cry for I cannot hold you as I am now. I will not hear your voice or your laughter for many years, and this stabs at my heart like a dagger."

"You will not be alone, and we shall meet again soon, of this I promise. The day your feet touch the white sands of Valinor I will run to embrace you. Then we shall never be parted again, until then I hope you shall hold my memory inside you."

Elrond was about to ask whom here in Middle Earth could hold a candle to his Celebrian. He wanted to know how he would be able to survive without her here, for his heart already was weak from despair. As he turned to ask this very thing the door opened and in walked his children.

All three came up to the bed and snuggled in. Tears of sorrow, were pouring freely in the little room, but Elrond then knew who would keep him alive. He could see in his children every part of his wife, from his sons' mischevious smiles to Arwen's eyes which were a mirror image of her mothers. Yes, these were the things that would keep his heart from breaking.

Elrond wrapped his arms around his wife again, and tucked all his children in. This would be the last time they would be a family. He closed his eyes, and fell into a wonderful dream of the day they would be reunited again.

THE END!
