Sorting Hat
Alice kept her eyes down as she walked down between the four house tables. This was it, she had arrived at Hogwarts. When the crowd of first years finally reached the front, Alice could do nothing but look ahead. She knew if she turned to her right she'd see her cousin Mark sitting at the Griffindor table, hoping she'd join him, but that wasn't where she wanted to be. After all her dad had been a Griffindor and, sure he'd had fun but to Alice, it had always seemed if you wanted to keep out of trouble, you joined either Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. It was with this belief that Alice entered the great hall, hoping to be sorted into Ravenclaw and ready to argue with anyone (or anything!) that tried to stop her.
Looking forward she looked in amazement at an old tattered hat that lay on a three legged stool at the front of the hall. She gasped quietly as it began to sing. It sung of the four great wizards and witches of old who were the founders of the school, how they had worked in harmony for many years until disagreements arose and it then went on to warn the students to unite and forget about their differences. Apparently it had been issuing the same warning for about 15 years now, but still they were separated. Alice agreed with the hat, she hated disagreements. That's why she wanted to be a Ravenclaw.
She watched as Professor Weasley rolled out a piece of parchment and began reading off names of her classmates. She told each person to sit on the stool and place the hat on their head. The first name was called.
Abbott, Rachel
A small girl with curly brown hair sat on the three legged stool. The hat was placed on her head and almost immediately it shouted.
'HUFFLEPUFF'
The table on the far right cheered as they welcomed their new classmate. Professor Weasley continued to read out name after name. As each student went up, Alice noticed the entire staff body watch him or her, before whispering among themselves. Everyone except a ginger haired lady of about thirty sitting at the end of the table next to a short wizard. This woman could only look down and Alice could tell she had been crying.
Blaise, Zabina 'SLYTHERIN'
The table second from the right caught Alice's attention. The entire table seemed filled with evil characters. Alice could see that the rumours about this particular house were true, and hoped she wouldn't become part of it. For it was well known that there wasn't a witch or wizard who went bad, (bar one) who wasn't in Slytherin. You- know- who himself was in that house.
Barns, Theresa 'HUFFLEPUFF'
Corner, Cedric 'RAVENCLAW'
Alice brightened at this point, that was the house she hoped to be in.
Crabbe, Gregory 'SLYTHERIN'
Dursley, Kathryn 'HUFFLEPUFF'
Alice couldn't help noticing how long the hat took to decide the fate of this student. As she watched as the dark haired girl appeared to be arguing with the hat. When the hat called the house 'hufflepuff' Alice was so surprised. As far as she knew nobody would actually chose to be in that house, and, from what she'd heard from her father, no one who truly belonged in Hufflepuff would dare argue with such a powerful magical object as the sorting hat. Alice couldn't help but admire the girl who had seemed so timid when they had shared the boat across the lake. The sorting continued.
Edgecombe, Michael 'RAVENCLAW'
Finch-Fletchley Joseph 'HUFFLEPUFF'
Goyle, Vincent 'SLYTHERIN'
At this Alice noticed a large group of red heads at the griffindor table booed. Alice, who knew these particularly as the Weasleys, couldn't help but feel glad she wouldn't be joining them. In her own mind, she felt sure she would do best in ravenclaw; the hat would see this of course.
Henderson, Matthew 'GRIFFINDOR'
Macmillan, Abigail 'HUFFLEPUFF'
Macintosh, Sarah The other girl who Alice shared a boat with walked up to the stool.
'SLYTHERIN'
Alice groaned as the next name was called. Her father had taught her all about this family. They were all destined to be slytherins. Alice, along with the rest of the great hall, expected the hat to announce the house almost before the hat even touched the boy's whitish blonde hair.
Malfoy, Lucious
Yet she was surprised. The hat took at least five minutes to decide. During this time the boy frowned. Still Alice couldn't help thinking that it wasn't the evil sort of frown; the child wasn't simply being spoilt like she had presumed he would be. She genuinely felt sorry for this boy. It was as though he needed, rather than wanted to be put in a particular house. Eventually the hat seemed to give way and the boy grinned madly, before trying to regain his cool and stroll to his new house table.
'SLYTHERIN'
Nott, Marie 'SLYTHERIN
Smith, Marietta 'RAVENCLAW'
Thompson, Daniel 'HUFFLEFUFF'
Weasley, Molly
Alice was right, they were the Weasleys, and well she knew where they all belonged. She saw the girl with bushy ginger hair table a quick glance toward the far table before looking up at the woman who had read out her name.
'RAVENCLAW'
There was a moment of silence as the girl walked to the ravenclaw table. The Weasleys were quiet whilst they digested this information before cheering, joining the applause of their cousins new house. The man sitting next to the head, whom Alice knew from her father's tales to be Professor Potter seemed to give the deputy head a knowing smile. Alice couldn't help thinking that was how it should be. The houses getting on.
Weasley, Harry 'GRIFFINDOR'
A huge applause erupted from the far left table. It was only now that Alice realised this was only the second new griffindor. This was unusual as they were already at 'w'.
Weasley, Alastor 'GRIFFINDOR'
The two Weasleys joined the rest of their clan, waiting for the third to join them. It was now that Alice realized there were only two first years left. After the final Weasley it would be her.
Weasley, Bartimous 'RAVENCLAW'
Wood, Alice
Alice stepped up and could feel all eyes on her as she disappeared under the large rim of the sorting hat, wondering how many scared first years had done exactly the same.
'Mmm!' a voice said.
Alice jumped slightly, realising it was the hat's voice.
'Plenty of ability... and courage just like your father he had courage. But you're a tricky one to place, just like he was. I think however I made the right choice for him, you'll do well there too, better be 'GRIF...'
'No', Alice demanded, 'I want to be in Ravenclaw!'
'Mm, demanding are we, your father was the same, I can see you're stubborn, like him, oh well if you're sure, better be...
'RAVENCLAW'
Alice was relieved to see he had placed her where she desired and hurried off to join her housemates. As she arrived at the table she found herself next to the bushy haired girl who introduced herself, Molly and her cousin, Barty.
The headmistress, Professor Mcgonnagal began to make her usual start of year a speech. The same she had used every year since taking over from Dumbledore. It however, was not as short as her predecessors and like her; Alice noticed many at the Griffindor table begin to get bored.
She leaned over and was about to say something to Barty when Molly interrupted, 'Shh!' you've got to listen she may say something important.
Alice managed to get through the rest of the speech by looking at the staff sitting at the top table. There on the end of course was Hagrid, the gamekeeper and teacher of care of magical creatures, next to him was Proffessor Snape, the potions master. Alice had heard enough about him from her dad to know not to mess up her potions. Next to Snape sat Madam Pomfrey, the school nurse. Then of course there was Professor Potter, Defence against the dark Arts Professor. Alice couldn't help wondering why he looked so confused. He seemed to be scanning the room in disbelief. His eyes met hers and the two looked for several seconds before she looked away. There was something strange about that man, perhaps it was the fact that he'd had to fight you-know-who his entire life. But Alice believed something different was bothering him this very moment. The look on his face reminded her distinctly of a look her mother wore once, when she thought she'd lost a five-year old Alice when they visited central station years ago.
It was several minutes before Alice dared look back to scan the remainder of the staff table. She saw McGonagall next, and then Professor Weasley, then a rather short plump elderly witch she presumed to be the herbology teacher Professor Sprout. At the far end, Professor Flitwick was speaking animatedly to the young woman sitting on his right, who had been introduced as Ginny. Alice thought she didn't look very interested. She too seemed to be scanning the hall. Who were they all looking for?
Alice spent the rest of the meal talking to her new house-mates. There was of course the two Weasleys. She learnt that Molly was in fact, Professor Weasleys daughter and Barty was the son of the minister of magic Percy Weasley. Alice let a grin slip as she realised the resemblances between these two cousins and their parents, for she had met the minister once, when at the quidditch cup with her father, and he had been a very serious sort of person, truly set on his work. Alice could now see why both Weasleys had been sorted into Ravenclaw.
Also in first year were Cedric Corner, Marietta Smith and Michael Edgecombe. Cedric and Michael seemed to know each other already, so Alice decided to speak with Marietta. The conversation moved on to their parents. Marietta had grown up with muggles; however she'd never known her true parents. Alice knew that there was a good possibility that they were a witch and wizard. Growing up in the magical community, Alice was aware of the threat of the dark lord and so knew that many parents had put their children up for adoption, giving them an opportunity to have a safe life.
Here Alice and Marietta had something in common, for neither girl knew their real parents. Although Alice had grown up as a Wood, with her father Oliver and her mother Jane (a muggle), Alice was always aware that they were her adoptive parents. They had been just as surprised as she was to find out she was actually a witch. You see, after an accident played quidditch, Oliver Wood was unable to have children of his own and so, the couple, being little known in the magical community, had adopted a child through the muggle system. When Alice had received her Hogwarts letter, her parents had insisted she was muggle-born and that a little of the magic world had rubbed off on her but something the sorting hat said began to puzzle her. It had talked of her father. Of course, it could have simply been referring to Oliver, but Alice was curious. Was the hat telling her he knew of her real father? Was he a part of this magical community.
These thoughts filled her head as the Ravenclaw prefect directed them through a hole behind a tapestry of Hogsmeade. She wondered if Marietta was thinking the same.
