Hi! I'm so sorry I haven't updated recently, the disk drive on my computer
broke so I had these chapters written and I couldn't upload them. I would
have posted an apology but I know that when stories I follow get updated
and its just an authors note I feel gutted. Or maybe that's just sad ol'
me. Never mind I had fun reading lots of other peoples stories in the
meantime. I'm sorry but the child, or Harry for that matter will not be
finding out his/her identity any time soon, after all that's the way Harry
Potter books go don't they. The mystery isn't solved until the end of the
school year and come on people its not even Halloween yet!
Anyway, I still, even after these few weeks do not own Harry or anything
else familiar in these stories. I hope you enjoy and thanks for your
patience.

Defence against the Dark Arts
Finally Friday came. Katie had been looking forward to this day all week. It was the day they had their first lesson in defence against the dark arts. It was not so much the subject that interested Katie it was the man that taught it. Professor Potter. She had heard so much about him in her first few days at Hogwarts that she couldn't be anything but curious. This man had dodged death no less that 12 times now, when most wizards struggled to do it once. Not only that but she had heard he did it the first time at only one. Extraordinary.
She thought about the week she'd had at school so far and groaned. It had not been as fun as she had hoped. After months of wishing to be rid of them she finally missed her parents being around, most surprisingly she missed her dad. Not only that but becoming a witch she'd discovered, was hard work.
Professor Weasley, the transfiguration teacher was extremely strict, and had got stressed when all but a couple of ravenclaws had managed to change their bit of hay into a needle. Katie thought she may have given her piece of straw an eye until Joe pointed out it was just split. Professor Sprout was nice enough to her, she was the head of her house, hufflepuff, but Katie suffered from hay fever so handling plants, even if they were magical ones, wasn't really her thing. Charms was, need she say charming enough, the short professor seemed to be nice and both he and Ginny his understudy seemed very impressed when she was able to levitate her feather on only the second try. Then there was flying, boy was that an unusual lesson. Katie had surprised herself by taking rather quickly to being on a broom, almost as if she had done it before, but the lesson had been a disaster, even if she had been struggling to hide her giggles.
Then she had almost fallen asleep in astronomy, not to mention history of magic. True Professor Lupin was great, but not even he could make goblin rebellions sound interesting.
However, none of these were anything compared to potions. Already Katie had lost her house around 100 points in only three hours down in the dungeon and she had to admit they had been the worst hours of her life. Even worse than the moment she had said goodbye to her grandparents after leaving Privet Drive. The scowl on her grandfather's face was nothing compared to the look Snape wore when he looked at her. It was a look of pure loathing. Although he clearly hated all students except those from Slytherin, his own house, he had developed an instant dislike to Katie since the moment he'd laid eyes on her. She hadn't helped matters by getting a detention just fifteen minutes into her first lesson, but he was being so unfair, she didn't know what blew up inside her but she couldn't help herself.
She had served detention that night down in the dungeon with Snape who appeared in a fouler mood than in the morning and kept mumbling words like 'Harry' and 'bloody Moony' under his breath. These words just confused Katie about her potions master even more.
The thing that had to confuse her the most however, was the fact that he appeared to recognise the name Dursley. No one else in the magical community appeared to. Why should they, as far as they were concerned she was muggle born. Having spent more time in the wizarding community Katie had learnt more about the danger of being muggle born and the greater threat those who were, were under from Voldemort, a very powerful dark wizard around at the time. Yet Snape seemed to know the family. Was he one of the wizards her father had encountered in his youth? She'd of loved to here what her father was like, ands more importantly how he had been treated to make him hate magic so much for so long.
So Snape's detention had been a nightmare, as she'd sat listening to his cruel comments for half the night whilst scrubbing cauldron after cauldron. Half the stains she found she felt sure he'd put on himself just to make her job more awkward.
However, the detention would have been bearable if she'd had someone to sympathize with when she returned to the hufflepuff common room. But Katie felt, even with Joe, who she had to admit was kind of cute, was far too sensible for her liking. They had been amazed at her boldness in character; she almost felt they were slightly afraid of her as if she didn't quite belong. That was it, she didn't. The sorting hat had been right to discourage her from hufflepuff, but she had been so adamant.
Abbey, Terry (Theresa) and Rachel, the other hufflepuff girls all seemed to look up to Katie, having little courage of their own to speak out they admired her. However, unlike them she wasn't interested in make-up or hairstyles and could often be found rather with Daniel and Joe, arguing in the common room or playing football outside with the lads from older years. The small dark haired hufflepuff managed to impress them all by her skill at dribbling the ball around them and shooting the goals. Katie learnt that, due to increased number of muggleborns, those who didn't have broomsticks would often mess about with a football to pass the time outdoors.
Abbey's older brother David, the quidditch team captain had even talked to her about putting her skills to use on brooms. He agreed to teach her about the sport in the hope of finding a new chaser or seeker, as both had left the previous year, leaving spaces on the team.
Katie was thinking about this whilst walking to the defence classroom. She suddenly realised that Terry had been saying something to her.
'What sorry?' she turned around, 'missed what you said there.'
'I was just saying that Professor Potter's supposed to be the coolest ever. He's taught here for 7 years now; he even broke the curse everyone believed was on the job for years. No one's ever taught for more than one year since before Professor Quirrell and he was about around 20 years ago.'
'Yeah!' Abbey joined in, 'he's even a qualified auror, so he knows everything about defending against the dark arts.'
Katie, being muggle born, would of course been more impressed if she had known what an auror was, and that only one person, every few years was taken into training.
'Plus he's kinda cute!' this last comment came from Rachel, setting all three girls off in giggles to show their agreement.
Katie couldn't help thinking they were being silly. He was so old, like in his early thirties or something. How could he be cute? Besides he was married.
When they arrived in the classroom Katie noticed they were the last to arrive, everyone was, like her, looking forward to this particular class. Even the slytherins. Once they had all sat down Professor Potter began to speak.
'Welcome to defence against the dark arts, in my opinion the most beneficial subject you'll learn throughout your years here. In this classroom you will learn how to defend yourself once you're out in the bigger world. I'm not going to do an Umbridge (many faces Katie noticed like hers appeared confused) and lie to you, Voldemort is out there and its my job to make sure you're prepared'
Katie noticed the entire class in the state of shock. This wizard had said the name that they all feared to say. She of course, had never heard of him until recently, and still the name caused her to flinch.
'Yes, yes I said the name. Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself, yes Mr Thompson'
Katie noticed Daniel had raised his hand.
'But Sir, shouldn't we fear you – know –who,
'Voldemort Mr Thompson, say his name please,'
'Sorry, shouldn't we fear V-Voldemort I mean, he could do... awful stuff to us couldn't he'. A look of true accomplishment could be seen on the boy's face.
Weirdly the Professor just smiled, 'he could try, but if I teach you well enough, we may be able to avoid him. After all I'm living proof that it's possible. Anyone of you can become stronger than Tom Riddle, after all he was, about 70 years ago sitting exactly where you are.'
The entire class looked on the professor in awe. Katie heard whispers go round the class. Voldemort had attended Hogwarts. To many of them this was new information.
'Right,' he addressed the class, 'I'll begin by taking a roll, that way, I can get to know your names'.
One by one, he went down the scroll, stopping at every person to ask how their parents were doing or to inquire after an old friend. To Katie it appeared that this man knew everyone. He went to school with many of their parents, knew others from his work with the ministry, and the Weasleys it seemed, were his nieces and nephews by marriage.
The professor came to Lucious.
'Lucious Malfoy', he looked over his wide rimmed glasses, 'ah! Draco's boy!' the blonde boy in question looked positively petrified at what the professor might say concerning his father.
However, their dark arts tutor just laughed, 'well, tell your father Potter says hi, he'll be glad to know I'm well.'
Katie realised that when he came to her he'd have nothing to say. No joke to make or old friend to ask after. In fact, even those she knew to be Muggleborn seemed to have met this professor before and have something to share a joke about. But she had nothing. She was going to look ridiculous in front of the whole class.
'Kathryn Dursley' he looked curiously into her eyes, 'well I never thought I'd see you here, Katie, never thought I'd see the day a Dursley came to Hogwarts'
Katie felt herself blush. Saying nothing to her would have been better than this.
'How did you're father let you come?' he inquired.
'w-well' she stuttered, 'he wasn't too keen at first, but my mum persuaded him.'
She was really confused, she realised the professor hadn't meant to embarrass her. How could this man know about her father's attitudes?
'Good! How is my dear cousin?'
The entire class' jaws dropped as Katie suddenly recollected something. She stared at her professor and her eyes fell on his, and then up on to the scar she had heard so many people talking about. This was the little boy. Sure his hair had grown a lot longer and he was much taller but she had found him; the child in the photo her grandfather had ripped up. The boy who had seemed so familiar but at whose picture her grandmother had screamed and fainted. The boy she was never allowed to mention to her father, yet her mother knew nothing about him. The boy who'd meet her in her dreams and take her flying on motorcycles. Then she remembered her grandmother's words. She'd seen three Hogwarts letters. Her sisters, her grand daughters and... 'Potter's'. This was Potter.
She also recollected what Joe had told her of her new professor. After his parent's had died Harry Potter had been brought up with muggles. They were the worst sort of muggles imaginable and had locked him in a cupboard under the stairs until he was eleven. When he'd told her this she'd been shocked, but now she realised it was her grandparents she wasn't surprised. In fact, she felt sure Petunia would of done the same to her had her mother let her.
Professor Potter was now smiling down at her. She suddenly remembered he'd asked her a question.
'Oh, Dad's fine thank you, he's improved over the summer.'
She watched as her professor threw his head back and laughed, mumbling something she thought sounded like 'about time'.
'And dear Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia, still well?'
She was sure she detected sarcasm in her voice. She couldn't blame him. If they had treated him anything like she'd heard he had reason to hate them. She'd only stayed a few weeks after her birthday, and they were bad enough. From what she had been told he had to live there for years.
'Charming as ever, and magic fanatics, they were so proud of their little witch' she replied, and the two of them exchanged grins.
Katie could see the confused faces of her classmates; after all they did not know the Dursleys.
The rest of the class went on as normal; they spent the time practising calling him Voldemort or in some cases Riddle, which was harder for some than for others. Katie, who had never encountered the dark lord, or had long to fear him, found this task relatively easy, earning herself some of the points Snape had mercilessly taken away. But it took some others, the entire lesson. Judging by the looks on some peoples faces they half expected Voldemort to apparate to them immediately and punish them for saying his name.
Meanwhile, Harry told those stories of his past encounters, his duels and adventures. He demonstrated several complex defensive spells and finally invited them all to join the DA. His personal after school club, which he had set up when he was in his fifth year and the teacher was 'unable' to teach them the spells they needed to know.
When the class ended the first years scuttled out. Walking down the corridor the hufflepuffs did nothing but praise their professor.
'He's so cool',
'He's not afraid of anything'
'Did you see the way he just said the name, he's mint'
'I'm so going to be in the DA'
'Did you see the silver stag that just flew out of his wand? It was so beautiful'
'And the story about the basilisk in the chamber of secrets. Hey wanna go visit the bathroom he talked about?'
This talk continues all the way to herbology. Katie couldn't help but agree with them. Her father's cousin was cool. She'd found a teacher who could get on with. She would still miss her parents, and she still hated Snape but she'd get by. It cheered her up especially when Rachel repeated what her older brother had said about Snape and Harry. The potions master hated him too. David had said it was because Snape wanted the DADA job, and was constantly jealous of everyone who got the job instead of him. Katie felt she had found an ally against Snape. So it wasn't just her he hated.
That night when they ate supper she watched carefully the behaviour at the staff table. Harry she noticed was talking animatedly to Lupin about something and Snape just seemed to look on, with a look of pure hatred. She could tell Snape really did despise both of them, and it seemed too simple to say it was just because he was jealous of the man who had or used to have the job he wanted. She then noticed Snape glance around the room, his scowl becoming softer as he watched the students. Unfortunately, before she had the chance to look away, her eyes caught the professors and his face once more turned into the same scowl he had shown the two professors. Complete loathing. There was something about her that he seemed to hate more than anyone else. But what?

I thought it was about time that I responded to my reviews and personally thanked the senders. I know that when other people thank me it always makes me feel special so here we go. Aria-Wolfstar- my first reviewer. Thankyou, I got really excited. It was short but meant a lot. To me I mean, you probably didn't even think about it when you wrote it. Anyway ta! Lily and James Potter- thanks for all the reviews, they're great. You have some interesting ideas. I'm a bit worried that you cried. I myself wasn't aware that it was sad at all, apart from how bad the writing is. I'm v. flattered though. Launigsiae- yes Merlin Halliwell- Mmm, sometimes I feel sorry for Dudley, especially in Ootp when the dementors came. Its Vernon and Petunia I really don't like. So in my story ill just heap the blame on them. Eric2- thanks so much for your constant reviews and I'm glad to see I have made you think. The middle names will completely throw you if you concentrate, that's the idea. After all a hero of war would have hundreds of admirers and so its not just Harry and Ginny who admire Sirius' and Remus' efforts. Wait and see. Dolphingirl79- thank-you I shall, well have, anyway you know what I mean and im sorry for keeping you waiting. SeekerGinny- thank-you and here is more for you to read, or there was more for you to read since this is at the end of the chapter. Fear not, I think the next chapter will be up as we speak, (or as I write and you read anyway!). Skittish- thank-you, me 2, I will. He he he! Stevie- your first review was great thanks. hopefully there will be more clues soon. Not so many in this chapter but some definite hints coming up. Im not sure if some of them are a little too obvious. Watch out and see if you can spot them. Cafee- thanks and lets hope it will be. Which are the hints you've picked up on? And I'm interested to know where you think the hints are leading. Foxfur- Mmm interesting. Does no one think it is Sarah? Why not? Ibozun- wel I can tell you that you're wrong. Ha! You're the only one I actually gave an answer too. I figured if I answered everyone they could just check out my reviews and then they would guess but yours I can say is not right. Sorry, you'll have to read and keep guessing. Cosmos- You don't like Katie. Why not? She's not my favourite I'd have to say, I think I made her a little too perfect, good at too much you know, with her peachy life.
