She ran stained fingers through her blood red hair and sighed. The late afternoon air was still damp from early spring mists that had relentlessly melted the snow, trailing puddles along the cobblestone streets and curling rivulets of gold into the sand. It had been too long. She watched as the dark water of the Gemspark Sea swallowed the sun, her hand leaving her hair and tracing a pattern through the air in its habitual way, down her back and over her shoulder. She didn't notice. It had only been cut a year ago. Two years ago. It didn't matter. She was leaving tonight.
She glanced down at the thought, wispy bangs shadowing porcelain. She rubbed her big toe through the sand, fingers twitching at her side, itching for a new sketchpad that the rolling merchant Van hadn't been able to deliver for a season. She remembered old winters in Forget Me Not Valley, winters with soft delicate snows and cheerful Upseed flowers. Lately the winters were growing harsher and full of ice, the howling wind cutting through the mountain pass, freezing horses and travellers alive. She shivered. The wind was always blowing now. The older ones were beginning to whisper about omens, Nina wearing pressed Gemsoil petals around her neck and Romana closing her villa to annual visitors. Her lips stretched to a nervous, cynical smile. She would leave them to their long, dark seasons. It was spring, and the pass had melted. She was leaving tonight.
A warm breeze lifted the hair from her eyes as the water caught the sun, throwing glitter into the sky. She paused. From the top of the muddy hill she heard Gustafa humming as he tuned his guitar, from somewhere a kitten was meowing to a giggling young girl. Her stomach rumbled in unison as she smelled Ruby's spiced curry splashing in the wind and remembered her promise to defend her questionable championship in the milk drinking contest with Rock tonight. She snuggled her toes deep into the warming sand and sighed, another smile creeping on her face. She was leaving. Tomorrow.
