A/N: Please don't be offended at any of the language I use; Daisy does come from the south, 1921...it was what they said then, and I want to make this as realistic as I can (Without doing a ton of research, that is...) Oh, so if you have trouble with the dialect feel free to ask.

Sorry I forgot the disclaimer in the last chapter, but...here it is now. ^_^

Disclaimer: Mercedes Lackey owns the world; I own the characters and the plot. You have a problem with that? Go away.

It's time for...

Dun dun dun...

"Up, Daisy, up!

Awww, man, why I gotta get up when it's so HOT out? Daisy thought, the weather naturally depressing her.

Then she smiled and shot out of bed, remembering...today was the day she would first blow her new horn, her beautiful new cornet.

It was also her thirteenth birthday; the day she would remember with perfect clarity for the rest of her life.

"Ah'm cumin', Ah'm cumin'," she said quietly, sleepily, and then realized the voice she had heard waking her was not in the bedroom she shared with her three sisters. She looked around, surprised, but her sisters were not in the room. Did I really sleep that late? She found herself wondering. Why would they let me sleep that late?

"Hurry up!" she heard, and the voice registered as her sister Phoebe, "Ah didn't git up early to wait fo' un hour!

Oh. They didn't. She thought wryly, and threw her clothes on with what was, for her, a record speed.

She ran to the other room in their three-room apartment that her parents had saved for so long to get-

-and gasped. The cornet that had been there last night was second hand and almost green, it was so dirty. It seemed to have been replaced by a shiny almost-new one, only marked as old by the occasional dent.

"Whu...whut happened tuh mah ol' horn? Whut is that one?" she said.

"That is yo' ol' horn," another of her sisters spoke up, "Don' you know yo' own horn?" Normally Daisy would've noticed her sister's badly concealed grin, but no, she was too busy gaping at the horn on the table.

"N-n-no..." she said, somewhat in shock. "M-m-mah ol' horn wuz-wuz all...dirty...

"That's cuz I hadn't cleaned it yet," She smiled, obviously proud of herself.

"Oh." You shouldn't play tricks on people on their birthdays, she wanted to say, but she was really grateful, so she didn't, and just stood there, gaping.

"So what're yo' waitin' fo'? Blow th' thing!" it was her mother, this time.

"Ok..." she nervously brought the cornet up to her lips and her mouth melded naturally into a perfect embouchure. She drew a breath and blew a single, clear note...
