Pokemon: Reginal Adventure
Rock Hard Will
Chapter 5
Now on the next day, the team has arrived at the Pewter City Gym. Speed and Shinx stood confident at the front door.
Speed: Now this, this is where our pokemon legacy begins!
The other stood behind him still looking tired. They barely slept due to Speed wanting to get to the gym extra early. They were leaning onto each other trying to keep them from falling.
Leaf: Speed…did we have to come here so early. The sun barely came up and we hadn't even eaten any breakfast.
Lay: Yeah, the gym hasn't even opened yet.
Speed: As soon as Brock gets to the gym I'm challenging him to a gym battle and getting my first badge.
He then sat down next to the door crossing his arms.
Speed: And I'm not moving till I do.
The two friends' sweat dropped as Speed sat at the door of the gym. Shinx sat in his lap, curled up into a ball. They all came to accept it and sat beside him waiting for Brock to arrive.
The sun was now up and shining above. Brock walks through the city, saying hello to all the citizens and giving everyone a smile as they pass by. He even gave some trainers autographs when they asked.
When he finally got to the gym, he wasn't expecting to see the three trainers sleeping at the foot of the door. Speed was leaned up on it while Leaf laid her head on his lap. Lay and Shinx sat on the sides of him. The ladder of the two was curled in a ball.
Brock: I should be surprised, but with the way this kid acted yesterday I should've expected this.
He bent down to the trainers and nudged Speed in the shoulder making the boy gain an irritated look.
Speed: Mmh… five more minutes~
Brock: Ok. You can do that, but you won't be able to face me in a gym battle.
By pure instinct, this made Speed launch out of his sleep and on his feet. Making Leaf hit her head on the ground pretty hard.
Leaf: Oww! Speed, what the heck?!
Speed ignored her though as he got right into Brock's face with a tooth grin.
Speed: Finally! I've been waiting here all day now to have our battle!
Brock gives him a nervous smile as he nudges him back a little.
Brock: H-How about we go into the gym before we start talking about battling.
Leaf and Lay were now on their feet. Left rubbed her head with an irritated look.
Leaf: Could you not have just lifted my head? That hurts you know!
Speed scratching the back of his head.
Speed: Sorry about that, Leaf.
Shinx jumped onto Speed's shoulder and they all entered the gym. Inside of the gym was a rocky terrain filled with boulders and stones.
Lay: For a rock type gym, it's actually pretty clean.
Brock: We clean every Thursday.
When they got to the center of the gym, Brock turned to the three.
Brock: So this will be your first official gym battle. Are you ready for it?
Speed through a fist up with a smile.
Speed: Yeah, we're ready for anything! Me and Shinx will give me all you got!
Shinx called out excited with his paws out.
Shinx: Shin, shinx!
Leaf stood beside him with her hands on her hips.
Leaf: I'm ready also! I'll give it everything!
Brock: Great, so you should be ready for the gym challenge.
The two were confused. They've never heard of a gym challenge in their lives.
Speed/Leaf: The gym what now?
Lay: The gym challenge. My mom taught me this. A few years ago the Pokemon League issued a new variety for gyms. They all have a different type of challenge to give the trainers an edge.
Brock snapped his fingers, giving a smile to Lay.
Brock: That's correct! All gym leaders make special challenges that not only challenge the Pokemon, but also the trainers.
Speed: So what's your challenge?
Brock smiles.
Brock: Great question! My gym challenge is to see how hard your will is.
He takes out a remote control and pushes onto a button. The ground below them starts to rumble. Cracks start to form in the middle of the gym spreading towards the feet of the trainers.
Leaf: What's going on?!
Brock, in front of them, crossed his arms giving them a smile.
Brock: Welcome to your first gym battle.
The ground cracked around him and a huge platform of rock shot him in the air. More mountains of rock formed in front of them. It looked about three hundred to three and twenty feet of rock.
The three trainers looked at the huge pile of rocks with their jaws dropped. A referee walked in front of them.
Referee: Hello and welcome to the Pewter City Gym. Your challenge is to test your will to climb three hundred feet up the mountain.
Leaf: Wait! We have to climb that?!
The referee nods, making Leaf shake a little.
Leaf: Oh Arceus, I hate heights!
The referee kept on explaining the rules to them.
Referee: As you climb there will be checkpoints where you could rest. These checkpoints have helpers that'll give you water. After a certain time you'll have to get back to climbing.
Speed raised his hand in the.
Speed: Question, can we still use our pokemon to help us?
Referee: I was getting there. You can use your pokemon, but not to climb the mountain.
This confused the two trainers in front of him.
Leaf: Not to climb? What's that supposed to mean?
Referee: Well that will be left for later. Now it's time to climb. You will be given some climbing supplies to keep yourself from getting hurt.
He walks to the side of the mountain as some gym helpers give the two trainers some harnesses. One tries to give Lay one, but he kindly refuses.
Lay: Sorry, I'm not a trainer. I'm a nurse.
Helper: Oh sorry, sir.
Speed and Leaf were now fully geared. Speed took a knee to Shinx with his PokeBall in hand.
Speed: Ok, Shinx. I know you don't like it, but I need you to go into the PokeBall.
Shinx lets out a sigh as Speed presses the ball onto him and he transfers into it. Speed puts the ball on his belt and joins with Leaf in front of the mountain.
He looks over to Leaf who looks kinda scared. He nudges her in the shoulder, giving her smile.
Speed: Hey we got this. You're gonna do great!
Leaf smiles and nudges him in the shoulder also.
Leaf: At least I can get the top before you.
Speed: Oh we'll see.
They both started to climb up the mountain and bit by bit started making progress.
Speed: Making some great time, I feel like I can get there in like ten minutes.
Ten minutes later and they've only reached one checkpoint and barely reached the halfway point. Speed was struggling to climb up due to his muscles feeling strained.
Speed: I regret everything!
Leaf was also struggling a few feet below him. They were sweating literal oceans with how long they've been climbing.
Leaf: Spencer… where is the next checkpoint… I'm so thirsty.
Speed looked up and saw that the second checkpoint was only a few feet away. He climbed up to it and dragged Leaf up with him. They've both flopped onto the ground and breathed heavily.
Some helpers came to them quickly and gave them some water. They both gulped them down, letting out sighs of relief.
Leaf: Thank Arceus! I thought we were gonna die.
Speed: Yeah, we've must've climbed a hundred feet by now.
Helper: To be precise you're up to a hundred and fifty feet.
They both sighed. Speed stretches his legs and arms trying to get his muscles from hurting.
Speed: This really does test your wills. I've almost given up several times.
Leaf: We've gotta keep going! We're about there.
Speed nods to her. Leaf stretches her arm before they both get back to climbing. After a few minutes they felt a small rumble. Speed looked up towards Leaf.
Speed: What was that?
Leaf looked up when she almost got hit by a flying boulder. She looked up towards a ledge and saw Geodudes on ledges, throwing down boulders.
Leaf: Geodudes are throwing boulders at us!
She dodge another one which also almost hit Speed.
Speed: This must be the 'left for later' part!
More Geodudes started throwing more boulders at them, making them move around to avoid getting hit.
Speed: If they're gonna be like that, we just have to fight back!
He takes out one of his pokeballs and tossed it in the air.
Speed: Go, Rattata!
Coming out the Rat pokemon jumps out of its PokeBall.
Speed: Rattata! Use Bite on the boulders!
Rattata fang glows and as more boulders fly towards them he chomps onto them, biting down on any coming near. Speed and Leaf quickly climbed to get to the next checkpoint. More Geodudes tried throwing more boulders when they were blown back by water. Squirtle was firing Water Gun at more Geodudes giving Speed And Leaf time to get to the last checkpoint.
Squirtle and Rattata both climbed up to the last checkpoint and ran to their respective trainer. Speed patted Rattata on the head while Leaf held Squirtle in her arms.
Leaf: You guys did great!
Speed: Yeah really saved our butts out there!
A helper who gave them water quickly talked to them.
Helper: You better get back to climbing. This is the last checkpoint before you can actually challenge Brock. But you better start quickly because another obstacle is about to start.
As soon as she said that, the ground started to rumble once again.
Speed: What's with everything shaking?!
The ground once again started cracking when the rumbling started to shake the mountain. Coming out of the ground was an Onix. This made Speed narrow his eyes.
Speed: An Onix. Of course it's an Onix.
The Onix roared at them, making them immediately climb up the mountain. Squirtle fired a wall of Bubbles to keep the Onix distracted. The Onix slammed its tail on the ground making the bubbles pop.
Rattata came out of the dust and used Hyper Fang onto the tail of the Onix. It didn't do much when Onix flung Rattata off its tail.
Speed: Looks like they're gonna need some help.
He takes out a PokeBall and releases Shinx onto the field. He shook his head and got into a battle stance. Rattata and Squirtle both stood at Shinx sides. They all nodded to each other and charged.
The two trainers were almost to the top of the mountain. They were rushing to climb to it when Onix drugged down to the ground and climbed up the mountain. The shaking of the mountain made Leaf lose her grip.
Leaf: Crap!
She was quickly caught by Speed, giving her boost back into the mountain.
Leaf: Thanks, Speed!
Speed: No, problem! We're almost there!
They quickly climbed up to the top of the mountain. Breathing heavily as they both reached the top of the mountain. Speed layed down on his back, smiling while trying to catch a breath.
Speed: We…made it…
They both high fived when they heard clapping from behind them. Brock was walking towards them with a smile on his face.
Brock: Congratulations on your gym challenge you two!
They both just looked over at him, only moving their heads. Their bodies felt like rubble crashing into each other which felt very unpleasant.
Leaf: Every part of my body hurts. I don't think I'm getting up.
Speed: I don't think I can get up.
Brock sweat dropped as the two groaned in pain.
Coming from up the mountain were Shinx, Rattata, and Squirtle who were covered in bruises. They looked exhausted as they all fell to the ground.
Brock: Looks like the trainers aren't the only ones that are tired.
The Pokemon exhaustedly cried in agreement.
Coming from behind Brock was the nurse in training Lay. He laid a hand on Shinx's back making Shinx flinch a little.
Lay: Man they've been put through the ringer. That Onix must have hit them hard.
Speed: The people who climbed an entire mountain and almost got hit by rocks and almost beaten by said Onix are right here, you know.
Lay rubbed the back of his head.
Lay: Oh hey guys don't see you there.
Both trainers narrowed their eyes at the nurse in training.
Leaf: Some friend you are.
The two finally got back up on their feet. Stretching their strained muscles.
Brock: You two did great out there! Such will power to go through with the challenge rock hard.
Speed snorted, making Leaf elbow him in the ribs. Brock crossed his arms as he walked away from the two.
Brock: But that was only part one of your gym challenge.
They then felt another rumble. Speed groaned knowing exactly who it was.
Coming out of the ground was the same Onix that attacked them, but now it was behind Brock who smirked at them.
Brock: Now it's time for your first gym battle.
Speed jumped onto his feet, his body looking like it recovered instantly from its fatigue. He looked at them excited with fire in his eyes.
Speed: Oh yeah! Now this is what I'm talking about!
Shinx hopped onto his shoulder, giving a cry. Brock chuckled as he took off his shirt, showing off his rock hard muscles.
Brock: Get ready for a rock hard battle!
Speed and Brock stood at opposite sides of the rocky terrain arena. Leaf and Lay stood on the sidelines, watching that battle.
Leaf: This is your first battle against a gym leader, Speed. You gotta play it smart!
Speed: Yeah, I gotcha!
Speed gave a thumbs up to Leaf which she gave back. He turned to Brock who was organizing the two pokeballs on his belt.
Speed: You got this Speed. It's just you and your pokemon.
Coming to the middle of the arena was the referee. He then introduces the two combanets fighting.
Referee: The two combanets fighting today are the gym leader, Brock.Vs the rookie trainer, Spencer Nelson.
Speed sweat dropped hearing them use his real name. Everyone usually doesn't use it much.
Speed: Just… call me Speed.
The referee nods as walks to the middle of the sidelines.
Referee: Are the combanets are ready? You. Shall. Begun!
Speed: Let's go, Bulbasaur!
He tossed this the PokeBall, releasing Bulbasaur onto the arena. Bulbasaur let out a cry, getting into a battle stance.
Brock: Good choice, but you're gonna need a lot of power to go against Geodude!
He tossed his own pokeball, releasing the rock pokemon into battle. Geodude pumped its arms in the air letting out its own cry.
Trainer Speed vs Gym Leader Brock!
Brock: Ok, Geodude! Let's start out strong! Rock Throw!
Geodude dug into the ground and picked up giant pieces of rocks.
Geodude: Geo… DUDE!!!
He threw the rocks at Bulbasaur who quickly dodged the first one, but the second one nailed him in the head making him slide back.
Speed: Bulbasaur, you ok?
Bulbasaur shook its head before planting its feet back on the ground. Speed smiled.
Speed: Ok! Vine Whip, go!
Vines came out of Bulbasaur's bulb sides. He waved them around before striking them at Geodude.
Brock: Geodude, dodge out of the way!
Geodude ducked over the first strike and moved away at the second. When the last one came down on him he grabbed it before it could make contact.
Speed: Huh?! Bulbasaur you gotta get out of its grip!
Bulbasaur tugged at its vines, but the Geodude's grip was too strong. The Geodude gave a snarky chuckle before pulling Bulbasaur towards it. It raised its fist back and clobbered it onto the head. Sending Bulbasaur to the ground.
Speed: Bulbasaur?!
Bulbasaur was straining to get up, the hit from the Geodude really put a number on him. Leaf and Lay on the sidelines were worried, but they weren't as worried as the it's trainer who was trying to think of a plan.
Speed: Crap…Bulbasaur got hit hard. How am I supposed to get past the Geodude defense?
He thought for a second when something clicked in his mind. He looked towards Bulbasaur who got packed up on its four feet, not ready to give up now.
Speed: Bulbasaur, I got a plan!
Bulbasaur looks at his trainer with curiosity. They both nod to each other when Geodude came in for the attack.
Brock: Let's end this! Geodude, smack down!
Geodude charges a ball of ground and dirt in its hands.
Speed: Bulbasaur, grab the two rocks beside you.
Bulbasaur quickly grabbed them with his vines and lifted them off the ground.
Speed: And now… smash em'!
Bulbasaur, with a cry, smashed the two rocks together and created a wall of dust. Geodude didn't know where to fire and went with a shot in the dark. Brock looked through the dust, not seeing Bulbasaur anywhere in it.
That's when vines came out of it and grabbed Geodude by its rocky body.
Brock: What?!
Bulbasaur then lifted the rock pokemon up and slammed it on the ground, leaving an indent of cracks.
Brock sees that Geodude had swirls in its eyes, fainted.
Referee: Geodude, is not able to battle! Bulbasaur won the first round!
Speed jumped up with a cheer, congratulating Bulbasaur. Shinx gave a loud cry cheering him on.
Brock smiles as he retrieves Geodude back into the PokeBall for some rest.
Brock: You passed my first pokemon, but let's see you get past this one.
Brock snapped his fingers as the Onix behind him and slithered into the arena. It is towards everyone, leaving a clear shadow to look over them.
Leaf gulped knowing she would have to fight that.
Speed: Bulbasaur. Do you think you could take care of him?
Bulbasaur looked up at the Onix, it was taller than it by a long shot. It looked tougher than the Onix Big Boss had for sure.
Bulbasaur shook its head, getting into a battle stance.
Speed: Alright!
Brock: Onix, Rock Tomb, go!
Onix put its tail into the ground and dug up piles of rock out of the ground. It then twirls its tail around and launches all the rocks at Bulbasaur.
Speed: Bulbasaur uses your vines to slice through the rocks.
Bulbasaur used his vines to cut through all the rocks thrown at him, a few got past his defense and he got rocked in the head. More rocks started to pile onto him and all there was left was a pile of rocks.
Speed: Bulbasaur…
The rocks started to move out the way as Bulbasaur popped his head out. He tried to squeeze out, but was stuck between all the rock.
Referee: Bulbasaur is incapacitated. Onix won this round.
Bulbasaur sighed as Speed retrieved him back into the PokeBall.
Speed: You did good, Bulbasaur. Rest up.
Speed put the ball onto his belt and got out his second and last pokemon.
Speed: Ok Rattata, let's go!
Rattata launches into the arena, ready for battle.
Brock: A normal type, huh? Better hope you got some good moves.
Speed looked at his pokedex and looked at Rattata moveset.
Speed: …Oh no…
Rattata slowly looked up at the opponent he was facing. He then looked at its trainer with a look of disdain.
Speed: I'm sorry! Shinx wouldn't have done anything to it!
The Onix screeched and rushed at Rattata. The rat pokemon cried in fear as it ran away from the big bulking pokemon. Rattata ran around the arena in sheer fear. Speed was trying to think of a plan, but nothing was coming up. Onix just has a huge advantage over them.
Rattata was soon cornered by Onix who lifted its tail over it. Rattata cowered in a ball as Onix slammed its tail into it… when it suddenly stopped in midair.
Brock: Huh?
Rattata looked up to see the Onix sway from side to side before falling down to the ground. Onix had swirls in its eyes, fainted.
Referee: Onix has fainted. Brock has no more pokemon. Trainer Spencer has won the gym battle!
Brock's jaw dropped to the ground. How did he win?!
Speed laughed as he brought Rattata in his arms.
Speed: Must be wondering "How did he win? My Rattata couldn't attack." Well…
A flashback to when Bulbasaur was fighting Onix.
Speed: Before Bulbasaur was incapacitated, but before that I fired off a Leech Seed so it can drain your energy.
The flashback ended.
Speed: Rattata was just biding time until all of Onix energy was drained.
He scratched the now traumatized Rattata on its head. Brock chuckled as crossed his arms.
Brock: I should've known. That was one smart move you got there.
Speed: I got to give it to you too. I was pretty nervous when I pulled out Rattata. I just had to hope he stayed up until the end.
Brock: Well for you I think you earned this. I present to you the Boulder Badge!
In his hands, he gave Speed a rock-like badge. Speed's eyes shined as he took the badge into his hand.
Speed: Wahoo! Yeah! We did it! I got the Boulder Badge!
Shinx and Rattata both cheered as Leaf and Lay both ran up to them. Lay gave him oat on that pack congratulating him on the win.
Lay: Good job, Speed! That Leech Seed was pretty clutched.
Speed: Thanks Lay.
Leaf: That was a pretty good fight, but I think it's my turn to enter the ring.
Brock smiles.
Brock: Let me rest up my pokemon and the second gym battle will commence.
Leaf: You're so in!
The End
Me: Looks like Speed won his first badge and we finally figured a running question. Now it's time for Leaf to fight against Brock, but looks like there's going to be someone who's gonna ruin that for her and the gym. Look out for…
Leaf vs Rock
Later Speedsters!
