Chapter Four
Lonesome Cabin
Takao ran his fingers down the wooden door. It had been a couple of minutes since Tala went to get firewood. Takao was getting more worried by the minute. It wasn't like him to get all anxious, but Kai's bright eyes sent a shudder that he wanted to forget.
He's mine! You hear me Yurichka? Mine.
Had Takao's departure really turned Kai to the edge of absolute possessiveness? Had Takao done this to him? Takao felt a jolt in his stomach.
It was his fault. He did this to Kai. And he said he loved him.
How selfish. How utterly selfish of him.
Takao removed his jacket. He traced the jagged scar running down his arm that was caused by the broken alcohol bottle. Kai had been drinking heavily when he came back home. Takao had welcomed him with open arms as always, but Kai found some fault with him and fought with him. The result was not pretty.
He glanced at the white frosting on the window pain. His brow creased.
Tala still hasn't come back, Takao thought worriedly.
At that, he grabbed his cloak, a shovel and slammed the door.
~*~*~*~*~**~*~*~*~*~
Damn snow.
Damn up-to-the-waist snow.
Damn this bloody weather.
Isn't life great?
Tala was muttering curses which were unsuitable for any age. He didn't even bring the shovel with him like the idiot he was. So, here he was in waist deep snow, shivering from the cold and had gotten a few measly sticks for firewood.
Isn't life great?
And ever since the encounter with Kai, Tala had been in a very bad mood. Maybe it was because Takao's pain-filled eyes turned to Tala when he had arrived. Maybe it was because Takao was protecting Kai from the pain Kai had purposely inflicted on Takao.
But Takao loves Kai. And love, he knew had a habit of making people do stupid things.
He knew that fact all too well.
"Tala?"
Tala flinched at that voice.
He turned slowly to face Takao.
"What are you doing here?" Tala said neutrally.
Takao winced and Tala cursed himself for being so insensitive.
"I-I was worried that you-you might be in trouble," Takao said, stuttering.
Tala raised a delicate eyebrow which made Takao blush, "Really?" Tala sounded disbelieving.
"Really," Takao retorted sharply, trying to remain impassive. His face softened as he handed Tala the shovel, "Hope this helps," Takao said quietly as he turned to leave.
"No, wait. There's still something I need."
"What?" Takao said turning around.
"This," And for the second time, Tala kissed him.
This time, the conflicting thoughts that were present vanished and they were only aware of their hearts beating. Tala broke apart gently, his crystal eyes liquid and soft.
"Is that all you want?" Takao stated. It was like a wisp in the wind, but Tala heard it nonetheless.
Tala didn't answer. Takao turned and walked away.
"No it isn't," Tala said brokenly, "It isn't all I want from you. But you know that, don't you?"
He stood there in the white blanket of snow for a long time.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
They finally got the fire started. Takao watched the flames flicker in the fireplace and he shuddered.
It was like the fire in Kai's eyes.
"Tala…?" Takao asked quietly.
"Hn?" Tala grunted in his usual manner.
"Do you think Kai will come here? To this place?" Takao's eyes begged for reassurance. Tala sighed.
"…I really don't know. But," He hesitated, "I wouldn't put it past him."
"Did I do this to him? By leaving him?" Takao questioned again. Tala's head jerked at that.
There was a wet shimmering in his eyes. Tala turned his head away, unable to bear the pain.
We share the same pain…
"No," Tala's voice shook slightly, "He did this to himself."
"I love him," Takao whispered to himself.
"Damnit Takao! This isn't love!" Tala couldn't restraint himself. All the anger, grief began to emerge, "Lust, Devotion, Fear, but not Love!"
"And how would you know?" Takao retorted angrily, "You've never known love!"
"Yes I do! I love you, you silly twit!"
Takao's breath came out in harsh gasps, "You're lying."
"You wish," Tala said coldly, "I love you." Then as if
something was made clear to him, he let out a bitter laugh, "You know, I hated
Kai? Because he had everything I ever wanted. But that has changed. I pity him,
for what he has become. Voltaire and
Boris did a good job. He became the man they've always wanted him to be."
"Ile! I refuse to believe that. He can be saved! He can!" Takao yelled, covering his ears in denial.
"Save him?" Tala gave a low chuckle, "You were one of the reasons he destroyed himself. Stop lying to yourself Kinomiya! You were with him because you couldn't see him with anyone else! That's why you left. For you. Not for Kai, not for fear, but for you."
That was the last straw. Takao grabbed his cloak and ran out into the blinding snowstorm.
The door slammed and Tala collapsed in tears.

Takao ran, not caring where he went.
He became the man they've always wanted him to be
Did Kai really turn into a man like Voltaire? Did all his efforts to save Kai only push him towards the cliff?
Ile. He couldn't believe that. He wouldn't believe that.
But don't we always deny the truth, no matter how unreal it may seem?

He loved Kai.
Wait…
He used the word 'loved'. Past tense. What had changed?
Tala. Tala had come. Tala had changed everything.
And Takao wasn't sure whether it was for good or bad.

Sadness and happiness repeat again
Tala had run into the blizzard soon after Takao had left. Tala could have killed himself then and there for being the most pig-headed person there is. He hadn't meant to be so harsh with the truth. He just wanted to open Takao's eyes.
Open them so that he could see Tala as well instead of Kai.
How could he have done that to Takao? He was no better than Kai.
He gave Takao pain.
And now….
He might never have the chance to heal him either.

Takao crunched through the snow, his lips blue from the cold. He could barely feel his legs anymore. Everything inside him felt numb, paralyzed. But all he could think about as he ploughed through the white carpet is Tala's words.
Yes I do! I love you, you silly twit!!!
Stop lying to yourself Kinomiya!
There's still something I need
How could he not realize? The signs were written all over the memories. And he never knew…
He hated himself. He hurt Kai and now…
He hurt Tala as well.
Somehow, that stung him harder than it should.
Was he too, developing feelings for the red-head?
No, he couldn't.
He would only end up hurting them. As always.
This was his last thought as he fell into the white abyss.
Peace.

All he saw was white snow.

White
Takao! Damnit! Where are you? Tala wanted to shout out, but he knew his attempts would be drowned out with the wind.
Please, He begged. Then did a double take.
Begged?
Yes, he was willing to beg.
"Takao!!"
"TAKAO!!"
"O-negai…Takao…"
Tala dropped to his knees.
O-negai…don't take him away from me…
The wind howled.
