Ch.5
The Gold Fox Tribe
"You know," Sheikai started. "I think it would be great if you brought Annie with you. Then, you can return her to us, and she won't be considered a runt in this forest!" She looked thoughtful. "After all," she began again. "I don't think she wants to live with that title for life!" "Can I?" The young cub looked excited. "Are you sure? She could really be hurt." Esperanza looked worried for the little one already. "I'm sure it's a good idea! I know you'll take care of her!" There was a strange glint in the mother's eyes. "Alright then. I'll try." Esperanza sighed. "Come on, little Annie." "Yay!" Annie ran after the retreating group, into the forest.
"By the way," Esperanza called to Jessica. "Where exactly are we going?" "To my tribe. The second one. We built a second one, exactly like the first, so we could go there if something happened." She added, seeing their strange looks. "We're gonna tell my father you'll help, and get Bethany and Elizabath." "Who?" the others asked in unison. "My father, Gary, the chief, Bethany, a gold fox with eight tails, one of which is white, we only let her stay because she's the second's only daughter, and we must keep the chief and second bloodline, and her white four-tailed friend, Elizabath. They'll help us." "Oh...ok...I guess..." Esperanza was a little nervous. What if the chief, by some weird misfortune, recognized her? Well, he would, but not as Esperanza. He probably wouldn't care; she's the only one left, and the chances of her and Blacky restarting the black tribe was slim indeed.
The next day, they were there.
It was a lot wealthier than the black tribe, that's for sure. Everything at the old black tribe was made of strong oak wood. Everything here was gold plated, and Esperanza suspected they had the most expensive foundation possible. It looked a lot like the pictures in a human Greek Mythology book, those ancient Greek and Roman cities they showed pictures of, except this was a gold plated place. It was a bit eerie.
"C'mon!" Jessica said, amused at how amazed the others were. "Let's go!"
She led them through the crowded city, gold foxes staring as they passed, men tipping hats or bowing heads to Jessica, woman curtseying. Then, they reached it.
It looked like an ancient Greek coliseum. At least fifty feet tall, the others stared in wonder. "C'mon, meet my father! He'll wanna see you, Miles!" "Please! Call me Tails!" Tails pleaded. "Oh, all right. Well, what are you waiting for? C'mon!"
They walked into a secret entrance in the side of the coliseum. No one but Jessica and Esperanza took notice to it. Then, they walked through a tunnel, lit by the light of many torches. This room, too, shined with gold.
They walked through the twisting corridor for about five minutes. Then, they came to a locked door. Jessica pulled a gold key from her jeans pocket. The twist of key made a triggering noise, and the door creaked open.
They were in a throne room that looked of the ancient human Egyptian pharaoh's throne room. They walked up to the Gold Chief, Gary, slowly. Jessica walked up and sat in a smaller throne next to him. As one, Esperanza, Blacky, and Smokey bowed. Then, the others followed the foxes' example. Tails noticed that Smokey bowed lower than the two blacks. He guessed that the blacks didn't appreciate the gold's as much, like Maria had said...
"What brings you here, travelers? Answer, female black." He called to Esperanza. She looked up at him, and said, "We were summoned, good chief, by your daughter. We wish to help her on her expedition." He looked like he was about to smile. "Well, the last blacks have some sense, to strengthen their ties with us...and you're name is?" "Maria." "And the small one?" "Christopher." "Yes, well, you. Blue hedgehog. You wish to help?" "Yes," Sonic said. "Me and my friends will help in any way possible." Esperanza was relieved he answered respectfully. "Gray. You're name?" Gary asked. "Smokey. My full name is Smokey Evening, my good chief." "Yes, well, you, young gold? Why weren't you here?" He demanded. Tails took a deep breath. "My name is Miles Prowler. I've been with my friend Sonic every since I left the tribe, for I had amnesia. I can't remember my past at all, just my name." "Miles!" Gary seemed very happy. "Bethany! Come!" a gold fox, about as tall as Jessica, only younger, from her scent, came. She had six tails, one of which was white.
"Yes, chief?" she bowed a little. "Get Amelia. We've found Miles!" "Yes sir!" she became very excited. "What about Kevin? He's healing in her care." "Yes, him too." the chief said.
A few seconds later the smiling teen came back with two adult golds, apparently mates. They were in their thirties, from their scent. "Miles!" The woman ran up and hugged him. "Amelia, calm down." The man said. "He lost his memory, remember?" "Oh, Miles! The woman said. "It's me, your mother!"
"My mother?" Tails choked. "Mother!" he seemed to remember her. He hugged her tightly. "And, you're..." he let go of his mother, looking at the male. "My...father!" He ran to hug him. "Still our little boy!" His father smiled. "Mom, dad," he started. "I already agreed to help Jessica, but after that I'm coming home! To stay where I belong!"
Sonic seemed sad, but was happy his friend had found family. Amy was looking at Tails and his parents, a bit teary- eyed. Knuckles was watching Tails, a slight look of pain visible only to Esperanza across his face. Big wanted to go home. It seemed he and Froggy had just now realized they could do nothing much to help.
"Well," the chief said. "I'm sure you'll all do a great job of helping. If you succeed, the Gold Foxes'll honor you all. Now, Bethany!" "Yes sir?" She asked. "You shall go to. And your white friend, too, if she wants to." "Yes sir!" she seemed overjoyed. "Shall I get Snowflake?" "Yes. Thank you. Dismissed!"
She ran off, and came back bringing a small white two-tailed fox, barely two years old. "Here you go, miss." She gave the child to Jessica. It started laughing and clapping. "Jessie! Jessie! Jessie!" It chanted. "Ok, ok. Please be quiet, Snowflake." "Ok, Jessie." The little fox said. Then, Bethany left again. This time, she brought back a white fox, fifteen years old, with four tails. She wore a bandana, but that was it. But hey, Blacky didn't wear anything...foxes had fur.
"Alright, there are fourteen of you." He said. "A good number, but a small one; you might not be able to protect my daughter. You will go to the wolf packs in the forest, and find at least one other helper. Now, good luck! The fate of the gold foxes rests in you hands."
They left the city, and were at the limits of the red wolf pack in about an hour. It was late, so they set up camp were the foxes agreed was a safe distance, so not to antagonize the wolves by sleeping in their territory.
The next morning, they walked up to the border, and called the proper greeting to the wolves. "Who is it?" A feminine voice called. "We are Jessica of the Gold Fox Tribe, Chief's daughter, with baby white fox, Snowflake," she nudged Esperanza to indicate she was next. "Maria, of the Black Fox Tribe," she said. Blacky was about to shout, but was interrupted. "But, I heard they were all dead!" "No," Esperanza said, slightly annoyed, slightly amused. "But my friend..." "Christopher!" Blacky chimed in. "Chris... and I are the only ones left." "I see...go on..." Esperanza nudged Alex gently. "I'm Alex, a red hedgehog from the fields outside of Station Square." Sonic was next. "I'm Sonic, a blue hedgehog from Station Square." "I'm Amy, pink echidna and Sonic's friend." "Tails of the gold tribe, but grew up with Sonic." "Knuckles, red Echidna of Angel Island." Big had left the night before, realizing he was no help. "Smokey, gray fox." "Carrie, bronze cat." "Hilary, purple hedgehog, older sister of Alex." "Bethany, gold second's daughter." "Elizabath, white fox and friend of Bethany." "We come on a peaceful plea for help." Jessica said.
"Alright, come here." The voice came back. They followed it deeper into the forest, then, they met the speaker. She was a teenage, white wolf with three black tails. She looked kind, but it seemed she could be stern, too. "Alright, I'm Emily, and I'd like you to meet the Alpha Male." She gestured for them to follow her.
They followed her through the territory, occasionally seeing a wolf pounce on a doe or pups playing. After a while, they reached the wolf den.
It was a small stone area beside a mountain; wolves were seen playing, watching young, fighting, sleeping, all shorts of things. They walked in a beeline for an indention in the stone. This had to be were they would meet the Alpha Male; they all knew it.
"Alpha Male, we have company for you!" Emily said sweetly, but Esperanza knew she probably didn't like the alpha male much from the hint of acid in her voice. "Oh really? Where were they sent from?" The male voice sounded not a day over twenty. "A peaceful plea of help from the Gold Fox Tribe." She said blankly, waiting for his reply. "Oh! Well, send them in!"
Emily gave Jessica a little prod in the back to signal that they should move forward. Jessica looked as though she could've hit her, but moved slowly forward. Snowflake looked madly at the wolf for prodding her 'mommy', but Jessica softly whispered something to her to calm her down. Esperanza was full of energy as they walked into the room, but she dreaded what they'd find on the other end.
The den was very spacious, in contrast to its small look from the outside. There were bare places obviously used for sleep, and a smaller space; Esperanza was sure the Alpha Male and Female would sleep there. It looked much more comfortable than the other sleeping space. There was also another smaller one, for cubs and a few mothers to watch over them.
There was also a place where the stone was stained with blood; no doubt a place for eating. There was even more room for just walking around in the safety of the den and for organizing hunting packs and whatever else the wolves could do that Esperanza couldn't guess.
Over in the very back of the den, they could see a wolf, larger than the ones they'd seen before, walking out.
