Ch. 6

The Alpha Male and the Wolves

The Alpha Male was very young; Esperanza estimated about nineteen or twenty. He was pretty big for his age, and, in Esperanza, Smokey, and Jessica's opinion, kind of attractive. His soft, creamy red fur was the perfect blend, like a rare and beautiful red fall leaf fresh off the tree.

In contrast to Emily and a very few others, he walked on four legs; Esperanza thought it just like how she walked on two, but Blacky four. It didn't make the biggest difference.

The wolf had deep, golden-red eyes, the same beautiful, hypnotizing ones the gold's had, except they seemed to work better than a gold's could on Esperanza. She seemed so... at ease here...

The Alpha Male gave a little grin, revealing a few sharp fangs. "Hello!" He said in a friendly voice, "I am Autumn, the Alpha Male of this Pack." He cocked his head to the side. "How can my Pack help you, Lady Jessica?"

Jessica seemed flattered at being called by a title. "Well, my good Alpha Male, we come with a plea for help." For once, she spoke with a certain humble note in her voice, replacing the commanding one. She placed Snowflake in Esperanza's hands as she kneeled down a little to show the importance of her plea.

Snowflake looked up at Esperanza, her violet eyes wide as if it was the first time she'd noticed the teen. She cocked her head, and smiled a little. Esperanza smiled back, and then had to quickly stop the girl from getting into a fit of laughter with her happiness by softly whispering to her, though she knew not what she was saying. It seemed an ancient language she'd known, but long forgotten. That quieted the little girl down somehow. "Oh, ok." The little girl smiled up at her.

"You see," Jessica explained, unaware of the toddler's near outburst, "We are in grave danger. Ragini, an ancient enemy of the Foxes, has come to our tribe. She's taking more of us than ever imaginable. She's destroyed all but these two of the black fox tribe, and is taking many golds as we speak." She gestured to Esperanza and Blacky as she mentioned the Black Tribe. Jessica continued. "A while past, and she hadn't left, so we called upon the other Tribes for help. We feared that she might destroy us as well. However, my father had misjudged, and now we're sad to say that all of the Tribes of Foxes are in grave danger from Ragini. And now, new signs, much like the ones signaling Ragini's arrival, are appearing..." She broke off for a second, shuddering at the thought of what she'd just spoken.

The other foxes are in danger? She didn't say that before... Esperanza's mind was now spinning. She may not have cared for the higher colors, but the grays had always tried to be there for them! The Gray Fox Tribe Chief, Cody, had always tried to keep their Black Chiefs, Midnight and his mate Shine, about when the other tribes would do something a bit out of hand. Midnight had died a little while after the war, and no one had really ever known who Shine was, though she became their Leader after her mate's death.

Jessica looked up into Autumn's golden-red eyes. "Please, good Leader, we request help from your pack. We're seeking help in our quest to find one of two things. We wish to find the one fox who could defeat the beast, or the Soul Blade, a legendary sword that we know could save us if the right one wields it. My father might want more warriors, to fight, but if you don't want to, we'll understand. We just wish for help..."

Autumn nodded. "We may be able to spare a few wolves to help you... our bonds to the Foxes are fiercely strong. Emily?" He looked at the female. "You and Sarah shall accompany them." Emily nodded, and left. He turned to Jessica. "Our Emily and Sarah are two of our best hunters. And they are pretty good on quests. I know they'll help you the best that they can."

Jessica seemed overjoyed. "Thank you so much, Autumn..." She seemed unable to thank him enough. Esperanza rolled her eyes when Snowflake wasn't looking. Sure, act like that toward your superiors. You didn't act nearly as nice to us. Esperanza sighed, and Snowflake looked at her, her head cocked to the side as if to say, "Are you ok, lady?". Esperanza smiled. Snowflake smiled back, and whispered something. Esperanza looked puzzled. "What?" She mouthed back. The little one rolled her eyes. "Hespiany seisfeuo." Esperanza looked a bit confused, but nodded as if she understood. Snowflake stared at her. Apparently it hadn't been a question. Snowflake looked pleadingly at her for a second, then Jessica got up and took the little fox. Snowflake looked at Esperanza, then Jessica. "Hespiany seisfeuo." She repeated, as if it were the most important thing in the world. Jessica stared at Esperanza, who shrugged. Jessica looked down at Snowflake, and said, "Snowy, can you talk in English now?" Snowflake seemed to consider this, and then shook her head. No. She worriedly looked toward the Alpha Male. Esperanza nodded, and mouthed to Jessica, 'She doesn't want to say in front of him. Don't ask me why.'

Emily came back just then, with a red wolf following her. She smiled at the group. "Everyone, this is Sarah. Sarah, this is everyone. Now let's go." She had a bit of urgency in her voice. "No, you need more time to get ready." Autumn said cheerfully. "You're welcome to stay here overnight, if you wish." He added to the others.

Esperanza saw Snowy start to fidget and the wolves' eyes seemed to be telling her to decline. However, before she could speak, Jessica smiled back. "Thank you. Perhaps it would be best to give them some time." Snowy looked horror-struck for a second. Jessica looked down at her. "Please excuse us." She said to Autumn, and Esperanza quickly left with the two.

"What's wrong, Snowy?" Jessica looked at the little girl, Esperanza right behind her. Snowflake started to cry. Jessica looked softly at her. "Don't worry... It's ok..." She gently rocked the toddler as she tried to comfort her. After a few minutes of whispering to her softly, Snowflake looked up. "Are you ok?" Esperanza asked, and Jessica stared at her. She evidently didn't realize Esperanza had been there. Snowy looked at the two teens. "No." She sobbed, looking at them with wide eyes. "What's wrong, Snowy?" Jessica asked. "I try a tell you!" She screeched. Seeing both girls confused, she rolled her eyes again. "Hespiany seisfeuo! You gotta wisten!" Esperanza guessed she meant listen. Then, something automatically came to mind. "She's talking in that strange language you whisper to her in, isn't she?" Jessica was stunned. "I don't know what it means!" "Neither do I." Snowflake looked exasperated. "Ibiots!" she yelled. Idiots, Esperanza guessed. And she got credit for that one; who talks in a language they don't understand?

Jessica sighed. "Well, we better head back in..." "No! I stay ou ere!" Out here. Esperanza stared at her. "She doesn't want to go inside?" "I guess not." Jessica sighed.

"So... what should we do about it?" Esperanza asked after a long pause. "Well, maybe I should stay out here with her..." Jessica seemed deep in thought. "Look, Snowy, we'll sleep out here, ok?" Snowy gave her a suspicious look. Finally giving in, the toddler nodded. "But I no go in dere!" She said, arms crossed. Jessica sighed.

"I'll watch her," a red wolf, about the same age as Emily, walked forward. "I'm Sarah. I've been told I'm going with you. I suppose I should get used to you. I'll watch her." She smiled. Jessica, seeming relieved, handed Snowy over carefully. "Thank you so much." She sighed. Snowy seemed perfectly happy with this wolf. Apparently she was afraid of Autumn.

The two teenage foxes walked back into the cave, finding the rest of the gang in deep conversation with some of the wolves. Most were trying to claim the best guest sleeping spaces. It seemed so far Amy had the best, keeping everyone away with a threatening motion of her hammer. That is, until Sonic came up from behind and pushed her out of the spot. Everyone scrambled for the place.

"Well, at least they're acting like wolves." Jessica said, slightly embarrassed that her group would behave in such a way. Esperanza giggled. Then, the gold fox looked up at Autumn. "I'll be sleeping outside, with Snowy. She doesn't like the cave."

"Pity," he said. "Is she alright?" "I think so." Jessica replied. "I'm going outside, I don't want to get lost in this stupid scramble." And with that, she left.

Looking back at the group, Esperanza saw that Blacky was now in possession of the special spot. But Knuckles was right behind him. The others had crowded around, and then Blacky was out of the way. Esperanza was considering joining the struggle, until Autumn walked up. "You know," he whispered, "that isn't really the best spot." Esperanza stared at him. "It isn't?" "No. The best spot's over there." He gestured over to an available site, pretty close to where the important wolf members slept. No wonder no one was over there, she thought. She didn't know they were allowed anywhere near over there. As if he'd read her mind, Autumn grinned. "You're allowed. We're not that strict, you know."

Deciding to take his advice, Esperanza walked over to the little patch of ground. Considering they were in a cave, it was quite comfortable. She giggled all the more as she watched the others toil over the second-rate patch, making herself comfortable. She wondered if they'd notice her at all.

Blacky did. Silently leaving the rumble, he headed over to her. "Are we allowed over here?" he asked, puzzled. "Yup. Autumn told me." "Well, in that case, I'm sleeping over here!" Blacky settled down in a place near hers, seeming as comfortable as she was.

A few hours later, it was finally time to sleep. Esperanza and Blacky got the best spots by far. Smokey ended up with the patch that was battled so fiercely for. Everyone else groaned and complained about pebbles.
