Bruce Wayne had done much with his life.
He was able to move on from the deaths of his parents, became the hero of Gotham and the world, and even took on literal gods.
However, at the end of the day… he was still human.
Which meant he could still die as a human.
He was prepared to die, of course. After all, he was the man who made a contingency plan for every member of the Justice League, including himself, should they all go rogue. And he knew that his body was limited compared to someone like Superman or Wonder Woman. So in the end, he knew that one day, he would move on to the other side.
Even with all that, there was one thing Bruce was not prepared for.
Saying goodbye to his loved ones.
Despite losing his parents at a young age, Bruce still had people he could rely on.
Commissioner Jim Gordon, who had been a good partner and an even better friend during his time as Batman.
Richard' 'Dick' Grayson, who was his adopted son and the first Robin, who eventually became his own hero as Nightwing.
Jason Todd, the second Robin and the second son Bruce had brought in. Despite their differences and the fact Jason had died, yet came back due to the Lazarus Pit, Bruce still loved him and did his best to help him, even when Jason pushed him away.
Barbara Gordon, daughter of Jim Gordon who became Batgirl, then Oracle.
Not to mention everyone in the Justice League, more specifically Diana Prince and Clark Kent.
And finally, his faithful butler, Alfred Pennyworth. He was there for Bruce ever since his parents died and had been something of a father figure for him. Always making sure he ate, ran his company and even argued with things he felt were wrong.
While Bruce was ready for the worst, he couldn't get rid of the guilt of leaving everyone behind.
So now, Bruce just sat on a cloud, staring at the rising sun with a deep frown on his face as he contemplated everything.
"What a view, huh?" A voice called out from behind. Bruce looked over his shoulder to see who it was, only to widen his eyes a bit.
"Adam?" Bruce asked with a genuinely surprised tone.
Adam West smiled as he walked over to Bruce, hands in his pockets. "Mind if I sit with you?" Adam asked kindly. Bruce recomposed himself and nodded, allowing Adam to sit next to him as he looked at the sun. "You know, I was expecting to see you one day, but even I didn't think you would come here so soon."
"Death is unpredictable." Bruce answered logically as he continued to stare at the sun. Adam glanced over to him.
"How are you feeling?"
"Fine."
"Really? Cause your eyes say otherwise."
"I'm fine, Adam."
"Maybe physically, yeah. But I'm talking about here." Adam patted his own chest, over where his heart was. "You feel bad you couldn't say goodbye to everyone, huh?" Bruce actually looked back at him. "I felt the same. Just… not being able to see your friends. You wife. Your kids again… it hurts. And it hurts more that you can't see them grow up in front of you any more. That pain still hurts me, even after all these years."
"..." Bruce looked down at his hands. "... I feel like I failed them. Like I didn't do enough to keep them safe."
"Now that is a lie, son." Adam cut him off while smiling sadly. "You did everything you could to teach those kids everything you know so that they could move on. Believe me, I know. You might feel like there's more you can teach them, but in the end, it's their job to move on and learn on their own. Besides, they still have memories of you, so it's not like you haven't left anything behind. It's okay to just enjoy the peace and let someone else fight for you."
Bruce silently sat there, taking in all of Adam's words. He had a point. His time on Earth was over and there were still heroes down there, ready to protect it from all threats. Even if he was the world's greatest detective, there was only so much he could do.
A small, genuine smile grew on Bruce's face as he looked at Adam once again. "Thank you, Adam."
Returning the smile, Adam wrapped an arm around Bruce and gave him a fatherly hug.
"You're welcome, son." Adam told him proudly before he stood up. "Well, let's get going. We may have the rest of eternity to be here, but sitting here all day gets boring. Come on. I have some friends who wanna meet you."
"Right." Bruce stood up from his spot before he stopped. "Adam… are they… here?"
Hearing this, Adam gave Bruce a knowing grin. "They're waiting for you, Bruce."
For the first time in a long time, Bruce shed a lone tear, feeling his heart skip a beat.
Looking down from the clouds one last time, Bruce Wayne took a step forward, ready to join Adam on his way to heaven.
Guys… this sucks.
It really sucks to hear about what happened.
Losing someone as iconic as Kevin Conroy hurts.
The man was THE voice of Batman ever since the animated series and he kept going, voicing him in the Arkham games and even playing a live action Bruce Wayne in the Arrowverse!
It just shows how much he loves playing the character and how much he cares about the fans. I should know.
A few years back, I met Conroy by ACCIDENT at a convention and needless to say, I was shocked. He was such a friendly guy and when he saw my Superboy cosplay, he jokingly told him to change my shirt. I have never felt so happy in my life and being able to take a picture with him is something I will always cherish.
Fun fact: My first name is Kevin, so meeting a voice actor with my name was amazing.
As you can see, I also made this oneshot to honor another Batman, Adam West. He was one of the first people to play the Caped Crusader in live action and I think that's something to be respected. It was a shame to lose him years ago, and now losing Kevin just adds salt to the wound.
I hope you guys can pay respect to these two amazing men and do something to honor them. Even praying for their families would be enough.
Kevin Conroy and Adam West.
Rest in peace.
