Dawn had told Kennedy what she thought to be the truth. She could never love her, not the way the other girl loved her. Dawn was straight, not once in her fake memories did she ever feel that way for a girl – it had always been Xander or Spike.
When Kennedy had told her how she felt one night while they were talking, Dawn didn't know what to do. She liked the other girl, a lot, just not in the same way. The slayer's sister knew that the potential was upset, but she was just being honest. She could never love her, never wanted to even experiment with her. Kennedy hadn't talked to her for days and when she tried do as much as look at her the other girl looked away.
The potential slayer wasn't shy, her straight-forward ways had created this problem. She had told Dawn 'I love you' and the younger girl had told her no. Kennedy was hurt, she avoided the other brunette whenever possible. Finally, Dawn decided to talk to her, a stern look adorning her face.
"Maybe I'm not-so-straight," Dawn said. "Will you give me another chance?" she asked, smiling like she hadn't ripped out the potential's heart.
Kennedy looked straight into her eyes, "I gave you one chance. So, as you said, 'never.'"
The Key turned away, she had forgotten: Never is forever.
