Kuri had thought putting Kaneki's brain back together would help him. Not make everything worse.
But now he remembered Anteiku and Yoshimura and all the people he must protected. It didn't matter that all of it was over, he still could not be deterred.
Kuri opened the door. "Oh gods Ken! Your eyes!" She grabbed his hands. "Stop it! Stop scratching!"
Kaneki struggled with her. "Let me go!"
"Stop Ken! Stop it!" Kuri yanked at his hands.
Kaneki pulled at her. "I-I need to get out of here!"
"Kaneki…it's alright. Everything is alright. The battle is over. Everyone is safe. Please…calm down. You aren't well enough to go outside yet." Kuri dodged his kagune. "Ken! Calm down!"
Kaneki snarled at her. "But I have to help them!"
Kuri grabbed his face. "LOOK AT ME!"
Kaneki finally looked at her, blankly.
"Who am I Kaneki? You know me! You can trust me! Please…" Kuri cried desperately. "Recognize me!"
Kaneki calmed, coming to. "K-kuri?"
"Yes!" Kuri wiped tears. "Th-thats right!" Kuri let him go. "Everyone's safe Kaneki."
Kaneki let her go slowly. "They're…safe?"
"Yes. Safe. You have to stay here until your healed. After that I promise I'll personally set you free, ne?" Kuri stroked his silver hair.
Kaneki brightened. "Y-you promise you will?"
Kuri gathered him in her arms. "I won't leave you alone ever again. I'll live here if you ask me to."
Kaneki shook his head. "You don't need to do that."
Kuri smiled. "I forgot. You like your own space. I brought you something!"
Kaneki was slightly curious. "What did you bring me?
Kuri held out the newest book by Takatsuki. "For you."
Kaneki's eyes widened and he grabbed the book. "You got it signed?!"
Kuri beamed, happy he liked it.
Kaneki opened the book and started reading.
Kuri grinned. "Want me to leave you two alone?"
"Unless you're going to read with me."
Kuri's eyes widened at the invitation. "R-really? I-I have a book in my backpack!"
Kaneki smiled. "Then grab it and join me."
Kuri pulled it out then sat by him at a respectful distance.
Kaneki, however, closed the distance, eager for physical contact after being trapped for so long. He even took her free hand in his.
Kuri was surprised and pleased.
