A/N: I was going to have the proposal be the end of the story, but I have been getting a lot of good feedback, so I'll work on more.
There were a few comments (or maybe just one) that there wasn't enough conflict which I understand so the next few chapters will not be so sweet and happy. But just know that in any of my stories L&L are endgame and nothing will stop that.
Also fans of the show should note that I felt in the series the writers made Liz seem really horrible until we met her and then she was great (in my opinion). I never really saw the woman who comes to SH as someone who would have shipped her son off and not come to see him at all. So in this story, Liz will be the Liz we see in the series right from the start. Plus Jess will not have such a big chip on his shoulder, partly because his Mom doesn't just dump him and leave him alone in a town he's never been to. Enjoy!
Two weeks after the Bracebridge dinner Lorelai was sitting in Luke's Diner with Rory and Sookie going through wedding magazines.
"You need to pick a date! That will help plan everything else," Sookie said while looking at dresses.
"Well I want to make sure Rory doesn't have school," Lorelai answered and then shifted focus to Rory, "I don't want to have you stressing about school work. This is a big day that will need all your attention."
Rory flipped through her day planner, "There's Spring break but last year I had two projects to work on and I wasn't on the Franklin. I'm sure I'll be swamped."
"So we'll wait till the Summer," Lorelai shrugged. "Summer is good because that way we can have it in the Town Square and not have to cut down the guest list. The whole town can come!"
"Oh Geez," Luke sighed while delivering a plate to a nearby table.
"Lorelai, if I may?" Taylor piped in.
"You may not!" Luke barked.
"Your name is not Lorelai!" Taylor responded.
"What's up Taylor?" Lorelai smiled.
"Well, there are no holidays in August, I'm always trying to find a reason for a festival to keep the town involved. If you're planning for a Summer wedding could you consider August?"
The three women flipped their personal calendars to August and smiled.
"I'm free," Rory said.
"Nothing going on at the Inn that would need our attention," Lorelai smiled.
"Saturday August 3rd, 2002? Is that your wedding date?" Sookie asked excitedly.
"Luke?" Lorelai called.
"Will it make you happy?" He asked.
"Oh very much," Taylor answered.
The girls giggled and Luke shook his head, "Well despite that fact. If you're happy, LORELAI, then it works for me."
Lorelai stood up and hugged him, he was holding a pot of coffee so could only wrap one arm around her.
"We have a date!" She smiled.
"Okay," Rory jumped up. "I'm taking this picture of you two beside the sleigh to the printers and I'll have a few Save The Date cards mocked up."
"Can't we just tell Miss Patty? She'll get the news out."
Rory shook her head, "Luke, what would Miss Manners say about this?"
He raised an eyebrow at her, "Good job at not killing trees?"
"Goodbye," Rory laughed as she walked out of the Diner with the picture.
With his arm still around Lorelai's waist he watched Rory go, "I should just get used to the fact that I will have no say about this wedding, hu?"
"Tell you what, you whisper to me what you want and I'll see what I can do."
"Just make sure I'm not wearing anything ridiculous."
"And ruin my wedding photos? Never! Can I have some more coffee? Sookie and I still have some time before we have to get back to the Inn."
"More coffee? You know I hate giving you more than three cups in one sitting."
"Please, I'll give you anything you want."
"Really?" He asked in a low sexy voice.
"Anything."
"Get a room," Sookie teased.
Luke pulled Lorelai closer for a kiss when the door to the Diner opened and a woman rushed in, "Luke," she called out.
Luke saw the woman and was shocked, "Liz? What are you doing here?"
"I had to come. He's driving me crazy and I can't handle him on my own anymore, you have to help me."
Lorelai's stomach dropped, who was this woman, who did she need help with? Her kid? Why would Luke help her? Did Luke have a child with this woman?
Luke had followed the woman to the counter, "Calm down and tell me what the hell is going on."
"I've been doing everything I could. I grounded him, I took stuff away, but that didn't work. So I went the other way and tried to give him space and I told him he had no curfew. But then he didn't come home for two days and got expelled from school. That was the last straw, so I figured I would move back here and you could help me."
"Geez Liz, what the hell do you think I know about raising a kid?"
"He needs a positive male influence. You're smart and stable and a good guy. Who better to help me?"
"Oh I don't know, how about the kid's Dad? Couldn't you have had these types of standards when choosing who to father your child?"
"Come on Luke, I need you!"
"Liz, in your entire life, when you have needed help have I ever not helped you?"
"No,"
"So, what do you need from me now?" Luke signed with resignation.
"Well I registered him at Stars Hollow High, so I need a place to stay until I can find a place for us to live."
"I live upstairs."
"I know."
"Alone. In a one bedroom apartment. There's one bed and a couch. Where the hell -"
"Carrie told me you got engaged."
Luke sighed with his whole body this time, "Yeah?"
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Liz, you moved out of our house, out of our town in fact, and didn't tell me. You didn't tell me you were pregnant until you were in labour. I got engaged two weeks ago, so cut me a break. And what is your point anyway?"
"Can't you stay with your fiancée for a while? She must like you."
Lorelai sauntered over to the counter, "Yeah, he's okay."
Liz turned to see Lorelai and her face lit up, "Oh my god! Are you Lorelai? You're the fiancée? You are perfect, you are totally his type!" Liz jumped into Lorelai's arms. "So good to meet you! I'm Liz, your future sister-in-law."
"Good to meet you too," Lorelai smiled at Luke over Liz's shoulder. "You know I run the Independence Inn, I can call now and see if we have a room for you."
"Well it would be me and Jess"
"Jess?"
Just as Lorelai asked, the Diner door opened and a young guy with a leather jacket and great head of hair wandered in. "Hey, I thought you said you were grabbing us some food!"
Liz hopped off her stool and grabbed Jess' arm excitedly, "Jess! Come say hi to your Uncle Luke and your future Aunt Lorelai. I have a surprise for you, we're done with our road trip. We're staying here in Stars Hollow!"
"What?!"
"This place has two streets, you want me to live here after living in New York?"
"This is where I grew up," Liz said cheerfully.
"Is that a selling point?"
Lorelai chuckled at Jess' sass and Luke gave her a warning look.
"The Hollow is a great place, there's a lake, each month there's a new festival, plus with Luke owning the best restaurant in town we'll never go hungry."
"That's great, but where are we going to live?"
Rory walked back into the Diner and was immediately drawn to the cute guy at the counter. She sat with Sookie and whispered, "Who's that?"
"The woman is Liz, Luke's sister. The boy is her son, Jess. Apparently Liz wants to move here because Jess was expelled from school in New York. But she didn't plan anything about where they are going to live. Liz suggested Luke should move in with you two now instead of after the wedding. Would you be okay with that?"
Rory couldn't take her eyes off of Jess, "Um yeah, why not?"
"Just checking."
Rory and Sookie then quieted and zoned back into the conversation at the counter.
"So it's settled, Luke will move in with me and Rory ahead of schedule and Liz and Jess can take the apartment upstairs," Lorelai smiled.
"Now you PROMISE you'll handle the early deliveries? All you have to do is let the guy in and confirm the items match the order form," Luke asked sternly.
"Come on Luke, I said I can do it," Liz whined.
"Don't worry, I'll be here. I can check her work," Jess deadpanned.
One side of Luke's mouth curled up as his eyes met Jess'.
"Very nice, you guys are going to team up against me already?"
"Okay, we'll be nice," Luke smiled. "I'm going to head to the storage room to grab some boxes, I guess I'm moving today."
"I'll give you a hand," Jess said, obviously eager to get away from his mother.
Rory stood, "I'll help too." She followed them wanting to learn more about this new guy in town.
Rory was helping Lorelai clean her bedroom in anticipation of Luke moving in. Lorelai was in her closet trying to make room for Luke's clothes while Rory was collecting plates, cups and clothes that were scattered around the room.
"He's read pretty much everything, he knows all the obscure bands that Lane introduced me to and he got my Monty Python reference," Rory gushed.
"Plus he's pretty cute in that Bad Boy kind of way," Lorelai added.
"Mom! I'm dating Dean."
"You were the one going on and on about him, I just added that I think he's good looking," Lorelai said innocently while placing some Summer clothes into a new Rubbermaid bin. "Come look, I cleared out a chunk, do you think that's enough?"
Rory glanced into the closet, "Yeah, great job!"
"It's thanks to your brilliant idea of boxing up some seasonal stuff. This way I'm not getting rid of stuff but I'm still able to make room."
"Well, I am pretty brilliant," Rory smiled as she started dusting the newly cleared surfaces. "That reminds me, did I tell you that Jess has read Jack Kerouac and Jane Austen? He's not one of those guys that will only read male authors, he actually wants to know different genres. And he's smart, it's one thing to be able to read these books, but he has opinions and insight, I could talk to him for hours."
Lorelai just smiled, she was watching her daughter be so adorably oblivious to the fact that she was falling for Jess. She knew that in a matter of weeks or days Rory would be in a love triangle situation rivalled only by the folks on The Young and The Restless.
"Hey, I'm here," Luke called from downstairs. "Are you ready for me?"
"Yeah! Come on up," Lorelai answered.
Luke entered the bedroom holding a large box, he placed it on the bed and kissed Lorelai hello. "Wow, I have never seen this room so clean! Great job, Rory."
"Hey!" Lorelai whined with mock frustration. Luke just raised his eyebrows at her. "Yeah, she did all the cleaning. I was just packing some clothes away."
Luke placed his box on the bed, "Do you want me to put these away or will I do it wrong," he joked.
"I'll do it," Lorelai said, "Not cause you'll do it wrong, cause I kinda like being domestic with you."
He kissed her and then they looked at each other with goo goo eyes.
"Get a room, you two!" Rory teased.
"This is our room," Lorelai laughed. "Wow, that's weird. It's not my room anymore, it's our room."
"You okay?"
She took Luke's concerned face in her hands, "There is literally no one on this planet that I would give up a fraction of my closet for, EXCEPT you," she kissed him sweetly.
"Thanks," he smiled. "By the way, I told Liz I'd make dinner tonight so she and Jess will be here around seven."
Rory jumped and looked at her watch, "Oh um, I'm going to shower quickly before dinner." She bolted from the room and headed to the downstairs bathroom.
"What was that all about?" Luke asked.
"I think she has a crush on Jess," Lorelai explained while hanging Luke's clothes.
"Great," Luke rolled his eyes.
