Chapter 9

By the time that the first years had woken up and gotten ready to head to breakfast no one was in a mood to talk. Too exhausted from last night to do anything much, and the upper years were even worse, not even getting an hour of sleep.

The first year Slytherins walked together to the main hall with little to no conversation. They waited for Snape to arrive to breakfast, and he looked worse than they have every seen him before. He silently handed them their timetables and then left for the staff table to drink some coffee and cure his hangover from last night. Snape completely ignored Harri, and that worked for her. But he couldn't ignore her for long, as she had potions with the Gryffindor's first thing in the morning. After breakfast, they all treaded to the dungeons for their first potion lesson.

As they entered the potions classroom, Harri's classmates began to pair off immediately sitting down on the two-person long tables. Pansy immediately took a seat next to Draco, Crabbe and Goyle sat together, Tracey and Daphne paired up, Theo and Zabini shrugged at each and sat together leaving the only spot open next to Millicent. She sat down next to each other and waited until their Gryffindor's counterparts took their own seats. Harri noticed sadly that Hermione sat alone but she still vibrated with excitement, ready to take notes and prove herself. Hermione noticed Harri staring at her and when she gave her a questioning gaze, Harri simply smiled and waved at her pleasantly. Hermione stared shocked that the Harriet Potter was being friendly with her and waved back timidly, hoping that Harriet wasn't trying to make fun of her. Millicent noticed them being friendly and she didn't say anything, not wanting to cause the ire of Potter after she had humiliated Pansy in front of their entire year including the second- and third-year students. Millicent turned away pretending not to notice the Slytherin and Gryffindor pair budding friendship. And it was a good thing that they sat in different corners of the room, or else someone else would have noticed their interaction. That was when Snape came through the doors with his cloak flowing outlandishly and dramatically behind him.

Harri turned her attention to Snape, and he stared his rollcall stopping briefly at her name and continued. Well, that was different than last time thought Harri. He glared at his students and his gaze passed right by Harri's emerald, green ones, not focusing on her at all.

"You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion-making,' he began hauntingly slow, like if were speaking to slow children, which to be honest some of them were slow.

"As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses … I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death – if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach." Harri nodded, bored out of her mind and taking quick notes that were already up on the blackboard. The class stayed silent with Hermione leaning over her table, ready to prove that she wasn't a dunderhead.

'Weasley!' said Snape suddenly. 'What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?"

Ron shrugged and Harri had the instinct to slap her hand to her forehead in exasperation.

"Answer me Weasley" Snape demanded, making Draco snigger next to Crabbe and Goyle.

"don' know" Ron answered, with his ears turning a bright red.

"Five points from Gryffindor for not bothering to open your textbooks before the start of the term and another ten for not addressing me appropriately." Harri eyes winded, Snape sure was pissed off today to take that much in one go. But no Gryffindor dared to exclaim at the unfairness.

"Let's try again, Weasley, where would you look if I told you to find me a bezoar?" Ron shrugged and this time said,

"I don't know sir" Snape's glare intensified, and he spat "Of course, you don't know you bumbling fool."

Snape was on a roll today, Ron got impossibly redder and before Harri could intervene he stared at her finally and focused on her, catching Harri unaware.

"'What is the difference, Potter, between monkshood and wolfsbane?"

"They are the same plant sir, it is also known as aconite, they only difference is the time and cycle of the moon that they are harvested in" Snape paused, not having expected her to give a thorough explanation and add additional information reaffirming her knowledge in the subject. Snape grudgingly nodded his head, but he didn't give her any points and Harri pretended not to notice to the outrage of her peers that expected her to get points for a brilliant answer.

"Well? why aren't you copying that down!" Snape exclaimed, making the students scramble for parchment and a quill.

The lesson only deteriorated from there when Neville and Seamus exploded their cauldron and got send to the hospital wing in the first five minutes of the lesson. Millicent and Harri were the first to finish, finishing well before the others were even halfway finished. Harri bottled the potion and bottled the extra and put it in her bottomless pouch meanwhile Millicent cleaned their working station. Harri went over to Snape, and he raised his eyebrow at her.

"Now what Potter?" everyone turned to see their interaction, some hoping that she would get herself into trouble, and others hoping that she would humiliate herself with a daft question. But to everyone's surprise, and Hermione's contempt, Harri had already finished and was giving him her little vail of brewed boil cure. He raised both eyebrows and look at her station where Millicent was done cleaning and putting everything away and took the bottle to inspect it.

"Its… acceptable" Harri nodded, not even trying to argue that it was the best he has ever seen, and surpassed outstanding. Harri had managed to find a way to change some of the properties of the potion and made it a clearer light color, instead of the dark off-putting color it was supposed to be. Harri had improved the recipe and helped Millicent understand how and why she did it. Snape lamented that Harri was born a Potter, for otherwise he would have taken her under his wing and focused in bringing out her talents in potions that she had inherited from her mother.

At 45 years old, Harri was expected to know at least how to brew such a simple potion. But she had improved the potion greatly because she understood the fundaments of each ingredient and the effects it had on other ingredients and understood the arithmancy that played a role in her stirring of the cauldron. Harri had taken time during her massive free time to study many branches of magic when she wasn't with one of her lovers. And potions were one of such branches of magic that Harri got into.

Snape kept the potion as Harri walked back to her seat, taking her seat, and taking out a Potter family book with the Potter crest on it that explained potions for beginners, and pretend to read ahead. But instead of the potions textbook that appeared on the cover, Harri was secretly reading a spicy, gauche, raunchy, erotic romance novel that should have been ban from Hogwarts that Harri got in a muggle bookstore. Harri kept a perfect poker face as she continued to read her novel, lamenting that this was as close to action that she would get for a least a couple of years, having to wait that her body catches up to her mind.

Hermione was the next to finish with a prefect book example potion, but she still scowled when her potion didn't turn out like Potters had. Hermione noticed the cover of her book and became aware that Harri was once again already advancing ahead of her studies and that made Hermione more competitive to be at the top of their class.

As the class ended, Snape called Harri name at the end of the class.

"Stay after class Potter, I have some things to discuss with you about your potion" not even bothering to ask Millicent to stay as well as it was technically also hers. Harri nodded and Millicent gave her a sympathetic look before she quickly walked away out of the classroom before Snape could change his mind and demand that she stayed there as well.

Once everyone was out of the classroom, Snape locked the doors and Harri raise her eyebrows at him.

"Miss Potter, where did you learn how to brew like that?" Harri decided to play it safe and pin it on her family.

"My trust vault has plenty of books on many subjects, and it explains in detail how each ingredient interacts with each other, and what cancels other ingredients out." Snape nodded and then praised her work.

"Miss Bulstrode got an Acceptable, but you got an Outstanding as you have shown that you understand the theory behind this potion." Harri nodded in pride and before she could say anything else he added,

"I'm expecting potions of this level in every class Miss Potter, as you have set the bar too high on the first day." Harri laughed at that and beamed at him like Lily always did when she did something well. But before Harri could make a biting remark back he whispered,

"I apologize for thinking the worst of you and judging you based on your…parents flaws" Harri breath caught in her throat, and she stared at Snape in wonder, never expecting to hear those words from his mouth. Harri dropped her bookbag, and hugged Snape tightly around his torso squeezing him as tightly as she could. Taking advantage of this opening of weakness from her professor. Snape didn't hug her back, but he also didn't push her away, allowing Lily's daughter to hug him to her hearts content. Harri rubbed her cheek against his robes trying to play on her innocence and smiled up at him. She let him go afterwards and Snape called back at her.

"A point from Slytherin for harassment of a professor, and ten points to Slytherin for a potion well done" Harri smiled cheekily at him and exited his classroom, glad that his bad temper seemed to evaporate after he had apologized to her.
